AUTHOR'S NOTE: One of the most iconic Broadway leading ladies in theatrical history, in honor of her passing earlier today at the age of 89, let us revisit this career-spanning InDepth InterView with the one and only Elaine Stritch. As a personal aside, following the conclusion of the interview proper the conversation between Ms. Stritch and I continued for several more minutes and she emphatically relayed to me that this had been her favorite interview to date and that she was incredibly appreciative and pleased with being questioned about the topics chosen herein. Matrix Theatre Company's 2014-2015 Mainstage season features a Grand Cyclops of the KKK, an African-American civil rights activist, 20th-century feminism, and a gorilla in a zoo, and we're just getting started! The feminist comedy by Gina Gionfriddo, Rapture, Blister, Burn, opens the season beginning in November, followed by Mark St. Germain's Best of Enemies, the true story of a southern town in the middle of the desegregation of their public school system. The season ends with the unique story of a woman confronting choices surrounding complications with her pregnancy and the part that a gorilla in the zoo and an elderly woman play in offering her comfort in Precious Little by Madeleine George. Hailed by the New Yorker as "funny and touching, ceaselessly clever and scarily talented," Nellie McKay has recently finished an extended run in the off-Broadway hit Old Hats (winner of the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Alternative Theatrical Experience and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revue) and has written two acclaimed musical biographies, Silent Spring: It's Not Nice to Fool Mother Nature, an exploration of environmental pioneer Rachel Carson, and I Want to Live!, the story of Barbara Graham, the third woman executed in the gas chamber at San Quentin. David Byrne tells the Wall Street Journal, "Her last two 'Cabaret' shows I saw have been jaw-dropping. They both completely subverted the genre." Among Ms. McKay's charms, Mr. Byrne said, are the ways she playfully mixes what he called a "tragic noir vibe" with her "wicked sense of humor.'" It had been three years in the making when Kristin Chenoweth took the stage at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday for her one night only concert. She was welcomed by thunderous applause, was visibly moved and happy to be there. Bayou City Concert Musicals opens its 2014-15 season with the 1957 George Abbott musical version of Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie, New Girl in Town, for five performances at the Heinen Theatre, 3517 Austin, September 4-7, 2014. The fully-staged concert musical production will mark the premiere of New Girl in Town in Houston. New Girl in Town was nominated for five Tony Awards in 1958 and won two...both for best performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. (more...)
