The 2017-2019 season will train, and present new works from, composers Matthew Browne, Scott Ordway, Frances Pollock, Pamela Stein Lynde, Liliya Ugay, and Amber Vistein and librettists Laura Barati, Kim Davies, and Sokunthary Svay. The primary focus of Composers & the Voice is to give emerging composers and librettists experience worKing collaboratively with singers on writing for the voice and contemporary opera stage. In a news story, the lede is the captivating opening paragraph, the exciting exposition that locks the reader's eyes to the text and incites them to continue on. The Disney musical Newsies finds its lede in leading paperboy Jack Kelly (Joey Barreiro), an unknowing hero who rallies his fellow paperboy troops to strike and protest Joseph Pulitzer's increased newspaper bundle cost of 10 cents. Delivering that with 1899 styles of dress, heavy New York accents, and large dance numbers, Mr. Barreiro and the cast of Disney's Newsies create a hot-off-the-press energized performance. (more...)

Goodman Theatre Holds Free Student-Performed Showcases for its Summer Youth Programs

More than 60 Chicagoland teenagers will perform in two final showcases at Goodman Theatre to conclude the theater's summer programming-Playbuild Youth Intensive and Musical Theater Intensive-on August 11 and 12 at 7pm. Both programs were offered free of charge and taught over a course of seven-to-eight weeks in the Alice Rapoport Center for Education and Engagement ("the Alice"). This year's theme, "What it Means to be an American," uses Langston Hughes' poem "I too, Sing America" as inspiration. The final performances are scheduled for Friday, August 11 and Saturday, August 12 at 7pm at Goodman Theatre (170 N. Dearborn). THE PIGEON KING Comes to the Blyth Festival

The world premiere of The Pigeon King is the third show on Blyth Festival's playbill this summer and tells the tale of Arlan Galbraith, the self-proclaimed Pigeon King who was convicted of fraud in a Waterloo Court and sentenced to seven years for his preposterous Pigeon Ponzi scheme. The Pigeon King is a collaboration featuring original music all created by The Company. Directed by Severn Thompson, the show plays from August 9 to September 23.  It's a country parable for our times, reminding us that what takes flight always comes home to roost. (more...)
