Actors' Theatre of Columbus to Stage OTHELLOActors' Theatre of Columbus to Stage OTHELLO
by BWW News Desk - May 2, 2016

In 1982, Actors' Theatre of Columbus (ATC) kicked off its first season with a single production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The success of that season proved that Schiller Park was an excellent venue for open air Shakespearean theater, and the troupe has continued this tradition for 35 years. "To Tell the Truth," Actors' Theatre's 2016 season, features four plays that ask questions about how far relationships can be strained and even broken by dishonesty, falsehood and slander. (more...)

BWW Review: It's a Pleasure Getting to Know Lyric Opera's THE KING AND IBWW Review: It's a Pleasure Getting to Know Lyric Opera's THE KING AND I
by Rachel Weinberg - May 2, 2016

Under the direction of Lee Blakeley at Lyric Opera (who originally staged this production for Paris's Theatre du Chatelet in 2014), Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical THE King AND I is heightened to the lavish and beautiful spectacle it deserves. This story of British school teacher Anna Leonowens who arrives in Siam to instruct the many children of the King has moments of sweeping grandiosity but also many of emotional intimacy-the Lyric's production makes the full emotional arc a delight to watch. Visually, the creative team captures every inch of the musical's opulence. Sue Blane's costume designs are breathtaKingly elaborate and incorporate an inspiring display of color; Anna's magnificent hoop skirts are definitely a highlight. Jean-March Puissant's set design also captures the grandiosity of a royal palace with many intricate details, while also giving the performers the space they need to execute Peggy Hickey's choreography, and Rick Fisher's lighting adds to the decadent atmosphere. BWW Recap: Jon Snow Heads 'Home' in GAME OF THRONESBWW Recap: Jon Snow Heads 'Home' in GAME OF THRONES
by Jessica Naftaly - May 2, 2016

Episode two of Game of Thrones just aired tonight and with it, we got a lot of what we had last week, shocKing deaths and violence, but we also got the answer to everyone's burning question. Is Jon Snow really dead? The episode, entitled “Home” not only was named so because of the word being dropped quite often in dialogue, but several of our primary characters dealt with their families, identities and “homes”. I would say this is one of the closes instances we've gotten on this show of having the title actually play a key role in the total events of the narrative, but alas, it still struggled to remain thematically relevant, despite it's frequent usage.  (more...)

Four Clowns' world premiere of playwright David Bridel's LUNATICS & ACTORS wonderfully succeeds as a loving spoof of the acting process. It's to the credit of all involved that what could have been a five-minute Saturday Night Live skit has evolved into 70 minutes of enthralling wit and engaging artistry. Chicago Shakespeare Theater Presents Barbara Gaines' TUG OF WAR This SpringChicago Shakespeare Theater Presents Barbara Gaines' TUG OF WAR This Spring
by Louisa Brady - Apr 30, 2016

On the occasion of the 400th Anniversary of Shakespeare's legacy in 2016, Chicago Shakespeare Theater  (CST) prepares to begin an epic theatrical endeavor-Artistic Director Barbara Gaines' Tug of War, which distills six Shakespeare histories into two action-packed dramas. Adapted and directed by Gaines as the Theater's centerpiece of the yearlong Shakespeare 400 Chicago festival, the Tug of War saga traces the injustice and intrigues of war from the perspectives of both Kings and common soldiers through two, six-hour marathon productions-Foreign Fire (Edward III, Henry V and Henry VI, Part 1) in the spring and Civil Strife (Henry VI, Parts 2 and 3 and Richard III) in the fall. Featuring some of Chicago's most celebrated actors, the dynamic ensemble cast of 19 performs over 100 characters throughout the electrifying drama. The musicality of Shakespeare's text is complemented with live music performances ranging from Bach and the blues, to contemporary pop and folk anthems. Songs from P!nk, Pete Townshend and Tim Buckley are accompanied onstage by a band of ensemble members on electric guitar, cello, keyboard, ukulele and percussion. Tug of War: Foreign Fire debuts on the Courtyard Theater stage for a limited run of only 18 performances, May 12-June 12, 2016.
