The Mercury Theater, 3745 N. Southport, begins its highly anticipated 2013 season with the exhilarating Broadway musical revue A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING, running from tonight, January 16 through March 10, 2013. The press opening is Sunday, January 20 at 2 p.m. The Tony Award-nominated musical showcases Richard Rodgers' timeless music and the incomparable lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein. The production is directed and choreographed by multiple Jeff Award winner Kevin Bellie, who previously served as Artistic Director at Circle Theatre. (more...)

During the weeks before Martin Luther King Day, my childrens' schools always bring attention to the life of Dr. King and the civil rights struggles that have existed and still exist around the world. I'm always appreciative of the effort, but every year I find myself wondering how much of the lessons hold any real meaning. As an adult living in New York in 2013, I find it difficult to truly appreciate Dr. King's teachings. What do I know about being denied my civil rights? I get outraged when the MTA raises the cost of a subway ride or when my child is locked out of a popular after school activity. How much understanding could my nine year old possibly have of the complex phsycological and sociological history of the African American experience? (more...)

Academy Award-Nominated Animator Bill Plympton Reaches Kickstarter Funding Goal With 16 Days to Go

Bill Plympton's Kickstarter campaign blew past its $75,000 goal yesterday thanks to the 1000+ backers that pledged between $1 and $5,000 to the project. With 16 days left to go, the campaign announced a new 'stretch goal' of $90,000 to help with P&A (prints and advertising). Backers of CHEATIN' can receive a variety of rewards including signed DVDs, limited edition lithographs, original animation drawings from the film, and personalized caricatures by Plympton himself.
