Saturn's Moon Press Acquires New Novel by Alayne Smith
by BWW News Desk - May 25, 2016

Alayne Smith's novel, Ellen and the Three Predictions, has been acquired by Cactus Moon Publications. The historic fiction YA details the life of eighteen-year-old Ellen Jones and the predictions of Old Luella, a seer in the small town of Marshall, Alabama. Old Luella predicts Ellen will defend the beauty, foil a dictator, and find the soldier. When Ellen reads the predictions after her mother's unexpected death, this all seems quite far-fetched. Through the political and social changes of the early 1960s, Ellen, a budding journalist, comes to terms with her role in the world, as she encounters each of Old Luella's predictions. These encounters take her through the social taboos of Callendar Plantation, Alabama, to the promise of Love and a career in Miami, and finally, to a daring rescue in Castro's Cuba. The novel also contains a special insert, 'Ellen's Notebook.' The notebook reflects Ellen's journalism education at the George W. Newman College of Journalism at the University of Columbus in Miami. A former advisor to CNN, Alayne Smith grew up in Alabama, lived in Denver and Tripoli, Libya, and settled in Atlanta, Georgia in 1969. She received masters and education specialist degrees in Instructional Technology at the University of Georgia. She served as a media specialist in Gwinnett County, Georgia for eleven years. In 1989, she moved to the high school level, initiating a high school program of broadcast journalism and video production where advanced students produced a monthly video magazine. With great honor, two of her top students were awarded an Emmy in 1999. For more about Ellen and the Three Predictions, visit the author's web site at www.alaynesmith.com. Alayne Smith is represented by Johnnie Bernhard, Literary Agent with Loiacono Literary Agency, www.LoiaconoLiteraryAgency.com . (more...)

BWW Review: Rocking Out to the Life of Johnny Cash with RING OF FIRE at CCTC
by Kristen Morale - May 25, 2016

The Cape Cod Theatre Company, home of the Harwich Junior Theatre, has decided to step away traditional staged storytelling and try something different with its newest "jukebox" production of Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash. Created by Richard Maltby, Jr and hereby directed and choreographed by Pamela C. Wills, with Nina K. Schuessler serving as Producing Artistic Director, Ring of Fire is a story within and through a performance, and this production has the unique ability to depict the lives of Johnny Cash and June Carter, complete with interchangeable characters and interspersed moments of chronological storytelling, in a way I could image they would have approved of themselves: simple, straightforward and even stark (how fitting that word is) in its presentation but so oddly appropriate for the unadorned but deeply affecting way Cash's music hits you. Those on stage are not "acting" to portray these music legends, but instead almost seem to hand themselves over to the audience's belief that this is not a presentation or something that is purely meant to entertain; they are there to tell a story, and with a wonderfully eclectic mix of songs played in the background, there is something so beautiful in the rawness of this entire production. YOU CAN'T KISS A MOVIE Set for The Metropolitan Room, 6/16
by BWW News Desk - May 24, 2016

An innovative reimagining of film techniques for live performance, You Can't Kiss a Movie features performer Shelley Farmer, whose passionate (obsessive?) Love of French movies from the 1960s New Wave is the seed for an original story about an ill-fated Love affair, told through the songs and dialogue of those movies. With a spirit of youthful immediacy inspired by the films themselves, this bilingual cabaret playfully tweaks the films' themes and gender roles while continuing their investigation into the costs and virtues of emotional engagement in art and life. You Can't Kiss a Movie is an exuberant, affecting show for both film buffs and newcomers. (more...)
