by BWW News Desk - Oct 8, 2014

A little over 50 years ago, on Aug. 31, 1962, an African American sharecropper who had spent most of her life working in Mississippi fields traveled to her district's county seat to register to vote. She was denied the right. So began the public activism of Fannie Lou Hamer, whose struggles for voting and civil rights spanned the next 15 years. This coming fall, excerpts from a new musical inspired by Hamer's life and work, written by playwright/composer Felicia Hunter, will be presented in concert format on one of Carnegie Hall's iconic stages. The one-night-only special event also will serve as a benefit for the Center for Law and Social Justice, Medgar Evers College, CUNY. (more...)

BWW Recap: SURVIVOR- BLOOD VS WATER 10/29; Full Results!BWW Recap: SURVIVOR- BLOOD VS WATER 10/29; Full Results!
by Kara McCoy - Oct 29, 2014

Last week, the island got flipped, turned upside down (okay, my second Fresh Prince reference in a week? 90's kids really do have a tough time letting go) as Hunahpu and Coyopa were mixed up to create two new tribes, thereby eliminating any hope I could have possibly had at keeping these contestants straight. It wasn't quite a merge, which is really the one checkpoint that every SURVIVOR junkie oh, so eagerly awaits, but it was certainly something--a necessary something, because Hunahpu's prior winning streak was getting lame, let's be honest. Now, the 'blood vs water' theme can really come into play, maybe even more than it would in an actual merge. On Hunahpu, fate in the form of an blue buff declared that Josh and Reed be the only new pair of loved ones on the new tribe. It wasn't a problem for them last week because Hunahpu won the immunity comp--oh my gosh, it's really starting to sound like a broken record; even with a new tribe, Coyopa can't win--but if they go to tribal this week, You Never Know. They could definitely be targets, which makes me sad, because I don't want either of them to go. Especially now that they've just been reunited; what a tragic Nicholas Sparksian love story that would be. (more...)

The good and bad news on how Californians are protecting themselves from identity theft and fraudThe good and bad news on how Californians are protecting themselves from identity theft and fraud
by BWW News Desk - Oct 13, 2014

COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ A national survey by Experian's ProtectMyID reveals that while many in California know some of the dos and don'ts of how to protect themselves against identity theft, they still are not following several basic protection methods when using the Internet. Unfortunately, this puts individuals at risk. The survey shows that 31 percent of California survey respondents have been victims of identity theft within the past two years. Nationally, that number was 45 percent. This likely reflects the high-frequency of data breaches that have occurred across the country and the 90 breaches reported in California so far this year 1. Virgin Wines was established in 2000 under Sir Richard Branson's Virgin branding and in 2005 it was acquired by Direct Wines. In 2013 Virgin Wines underwent a management buyout from its parent company and, as a result, the online wine retailer needed to replace its existing IT system and find a new provider to deliver hosting and managed application support that was affordable, reliable and could grow with the business. The wine merchant runs their business solely online, as an ecommerce company, and therefore uptime and stability became a key priority as part of their selection criteria for their new provider.
