BWW Interview: Tech Talk with Lighting Designer Amy Lewis
by Frank Benge - Mar 25, 2016

Very few audience members know what goes into the technical aspects of a stage production. Without the theatre's technical artists, often the unsung stars of any production, your experience at the theatre would be very different. In a new series of articles about the Technical Theatre artists of Austin, BroadwayWorld will be introducing you to some of the artists behind the scenes… the set designers, lighting designers and costumers whose work is so vital to a successful production. The process of lighting a play, dance piece, or opera is highly subjective; each designer has to develop a process that works for them. Lighting designers know how to use the subtle and powerful medium of light, creating effects that can be changed at will to match the mood of the action. We start our series by talking to lighting designer, Amy Lewis. (more...)

BWW Interview: Elle McLemore Dishes on GREASE LIVE!, What Returns from Stage Version
by Matt Tamanini - Jan 20, 2016

Even though Rydell High's easily excitable and enthusiastic head cheerleader, Patty Simcox, might not be the coolest kid in school, Elle McLemore, the equally as excited and enthusiastic actress who plays her in the upcoming GREASE LIVE!, is as sweet and likeable as can be. Most theatre fans know McLemore for playing less than loveable cheerleaders, first as the Machiavellian Eva in BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL, and then as the dim-witted Heather McNamara in HEATHERS THE MUSICAL. Despite some of her character's worst traits, McLemore is always disarmingly sweet and infectiously charming. (more...)

BWW Interview: Michael Fischer of THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE at Hillcrest Center For The Arts
by Cary Ginell - Jan 11, 2016

I haven't posted a story yet this year because I've been busy. For the past two weeks, I've been immersed in learning the flute part to the score of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which concludes a brief four-day, five-show run this afternoon at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts. Spelling Bee is a great show for improv artists, and being in the pit for rehearsals and every show, I am able to see how the actors handle the show's free structure, which allows for improvisation. If you've seen the show, you know what I'm talking about. Spelling Bee is being staged by YA4Ever, the alumni group of Young Artists Ensemble. To help out on this show, writer/director Michael Fischer agreed to play the part of Vice Principal Douglas Panch, the contest's 'word pronouncer.' We talked to Michael after a particularly riotous Saturday matinee performance. (more...)

BWW Review: PRIVATE EYES by Steven Dietz Takes a 'Comedy of Suspicion' a Bit Too Far
by Shari Barrett - Feb 1, 2016

Nothing is ever quite what it seems. Matthew's wife, Lisa, is having an affair with Adrian, a British theatre director. Or perhaps the affair is part of the play being rehearsed. Or perhaps Matthew has imagined all of it simply to have something to report to Frank, his therapist. Finally, there is Cory-the mysterious woman who seems to shadow the others-who brings the story to its surprising conclusion. Or does she? The audience itself plays the role of detective in this hilarious "relationship thriller" about love, lust and the power of deception. But unfortunately, the PRIVATE EYES story is impossible to follow as it is so non-linear that You Never Know who to believe when. (more...)

Having #TGIT Withdraws? The SCANDAL Cast Singing Showtunes is the Perfect Medicine
by Matt Tamanini - Dec 3, 2015

Since last Thursday was Thanksgiving, tonight will likely be the first time this season that you are going to be experiencing the severe symptoms of acute #TGIT withdraw. Unfortunately, after the November Sweeps period ended, ABC and Shonda Rhimes are keeping her doctors, gladiators, and murderers on the shelf until February 11th, when another sweeps period is in full effect. So, to help ween you off of your OPA addiction (you can't just quit Olivia cold turkey, ask Jake and Fitz), I have assembled a group of clips that show your favorite SCANDAL stars in a slightly different light than you are accustomed to, namely, singing showtunes!  (more...)
