BWW Interview: Transgender Actress Cece Sauzo-Augustus
by Olga El - Nov 6, 2015

Last week I had the pleasure of speaking with actress Cece Suazo-Augustus. Ms. Cece is many things: an Honduran/Cuban adoptee, transgendered, driven. 'I won't stop until I win a TONY. If you can perfect theatre, everything else comes easily.' She goes down a list of African-American TONY award winners. It's this goal, she says, that keeps her in theatre and keeps her humble. Green Mountain Experts Refute Six Tabloid Tips on Weight Loss During Holidays
by BWW News Desk - Nov 2, 2015

'Tis the season to eat, drink and be merry! Well we all know what that means; it can sometimes present situations that become a green light for us to eat with abandon thinking that tomorrow we will “get back on track”. The experts at Green Mountain at Fox Run, the country's first non-diet residential weight management program for women, have other ideas on the matter. http://www.fitwoman.com/our-program/.  They are happy to share their well-researched advice, not tabloid tips that are published during the holidays to grab headlines and sell magazines. WHERE ARE THEY NOW? BOOK OF MORMON's Candace Quarrels
by Jeffrey Ellis - Nov 1, 2015

Candace Quarrels' story is one of those hard-to-believe show business tales that is likely to resonate with so many people, for so long, that it might become legendary in time. In fact, it may be the modern day equivalent to the age-old tale of a young, sweater-clad Lana Turner being discovered at a lunch counter in Schwab's drugstore in L.A. (back in the day when aspiring starlets had lunch at drug store soda fountains) and being transformed into a movie star - who, interestingly enough (especially for this story), became a legend. BWW Interview: Elle McLemore Dishes on GREASE LIVE!, What Returns from Stage Version
by Matt Tamanini - Jan 20, 2016

Even though Rydell High's easily excitable and enthusiastic head cheerleader, Patty Simcox, might not be the coolest kid in school, Elle McLemore, the equally as excited and enthusiastic actress who plays her in the upcoming GREASE LIVE!, is as sweet and likeable as can be. Most theatre fans know McLemore for playing less than loveable cheerleaders, first as the Machiavellian Eva in BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL, and then as the dim-witted Heather McNamara in HEATHERS THE MUSICAL. Despite some of her character's worst traits, McLemore is always disarmingly sweet and infectiously charming. (more...)

BWW Interview: Michael Fischer of THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE at Hillcrest Center For The Arts
by Cary Ginell - Jan 11, 2016

I haven't posted a story yet this year because I've been busy. For the past two weeks, I've been immersed in learning the flute part to the score of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which concludes a brief four-day, five-show run this afternoon at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts. Spelling Bee is a great show for improv artists, and being in the pit for rehearsals and every show, I am able to see how the actors handle the show's free structure, which allows for improvisation. If you've seen the show, you know what I'm talking about. Spelling Bee is being staged by YA4Ever, the alumni group of Young Artists Ensemble. To help out on this show, writer/director Michael Fischer agreed to play the part of Vice Principal Douglas Panch, the contest's 'word pronouncer.' We talked to Michael after a particularly riotous Saturday matinee performance. (more...)

BWW Review: PRIVATE EYES by Steven Dietz Takes a 'Comedy of Suspicion' a Bit Too Far
by Shari Barrett - Feb 1, 2016

Nothing is ever quite what it seems. Matthew's wife, Lisa, is having an affair with Adrian, a British theatre director. Or perhaps the affair is part of the play being rehearsed. Or perhaps Matthew has imagined all of it simply to have something to report to Frank, his therapist. Finally, there is Cory-the mysterious woman who seems to shadow the others-who brings the story to its surprising conclusion. Or does she? The audience itself plays the role of detective in this hilarious "relationship thriller" about love, lust and the power of deception. But unfortunately, the PRIVATE EYES story is impossible to follow as it is so non-linear that You Never Know who to believe when. (more...)

BWW Interview: Grammy Nominated Singer-Songwriter LISA LOEB Appears at the Copa Palm Springs, 12/11
by David Green - Dec 9, 2015

Grammy Nominated Singer-Songwriter Lisa Loeb brings her signature vocal stylings to The Copa Palm Springs for one special performance, December 11 at 8:00 pm. Loeb is a touring artist, author and philanthropist who started her career with the platinum-selling Number 1 hit song "Stay (I Missed You)" from the film Reality Bites. A trailblazing independent artist, Lisa was the first pop musician to have a Number 1 single while not signed to a recording contract. She followed that remarkable feat with the hit singles 'Do You Sleep,' 'I Do' and 'Let's Forget about It " and the albums Cake and Pie and No Fairy Tale, among others. I had the chance to catch up with Lisa as she was preparing for her upcoming Copa Concert. Here are a few excerpts from that conversation;  (more...)

Having #TGIT Withdraws? The SCANDAL Cast Singing Showtunes is the Perfect Medicine
by Matt Tamanini - Dec 3, 2015

Since last Thursday was Thanksgiving, tonight will likely be the first time this season that you are going to be experiencing the severe symptoms of acute #TGIT withdraw. Unfortunately, after the November Sweeps period ended, ABC and Shonda Rhimes are keeping her doctors, gladiators, and murderers on the shelf until February 11th, when another sweeps period is in full effect. So, to help ween you off of your OPA addiction (you can't just quit Olivia cold turkey, ask Jake and Fitz), I have assembled a group of clips that show your favorite SCANDAL stars in a slightly different light than you are accustomed to, namely, singing showtunes!  (more...)

BWW Review: Adorable MARY POPPINS Soars at Stagecrafters Thru Dec 20
by Anton Anderssen - Dec 17, 2015

Any visit to the Baldwin Theatre in Royal Oak is a treat, but the fantastic production now on stage, MARY POPPINS will blow you away. This show is super! [cali, etc.] Stagecrafters have made this show a delight from the very moment you walk into the room; here you will see a Mary Poppins Christmas tree, with ornaments of kites, crowned by a signature nanny hat. Of course, just walking into the theatre gives a sense of majesty with that beautiful English Wedgwood blue and gilded gold all around. The show is a holiday treat; it has great tunes, great costumes and sets, a wonderful plot, and lots of magic. (more...)
