BWW Interviews: Playwright Donald Margulies Talks About CONEY ISLAND CHRISTMAS to World Premiere at the Geffen

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies' Coney Island Christmas started previews at the Geffen November 20 with a scheduled opening set for November 28. This work, commissioned by the Geffen, will honor past artistic director Gilbert Cates, who passed away last year, and promises to be very special. Margulies, who is renowned also for Dinner with Friends, Time Stands Still, Collected Stories, Sight Unseen and Brooklyn Boy among other plays, recently sat down to chat about the play, playwriting and the writers who have influenced his work. Margulies most definitely agrees that with the recent devastation to Coney Island by hurricane Sandy, audiences will look at his new play from a slightly different angle. (more...)

Bergdorf Goodman Unveils the Holiday Windows and the 2012 Holiday Experience

The holiday windows at Bergdorf Goodman continue their renowned tradition of high fantasy and captivating storytelling. The 2012 windows, entitled "BG Follies of 2012," are inspired by the lavish performances of American popular entertainment of the 1920's and 30's-- the Jazz Age. The windows evoke the glorious era of Art Deco theater palaces re-creating the sumptuous atmosphere of the Ziegfeld Follies, the verve of Busby Berkeley's Hollywood musicals, and the bounce of Vaudeville revues. David Hoey, Senior Director of Visual Presentation and his team devote an entire year to the production of the holiday windows. The windows will officially unveil on Monday, November 19th with one preview window Friday, November 16th. They will remain on display through Thursday, January 3, 2013. (more...)

BWW Reviews: A LITTLE HOUSE CHRISTMAS is a Feel Good Holiday Show

Based on the endearing Little House on the Prairie book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Main Street Theater's Theater for Youth is presenting a feel good children's holiday show that the whole family can enjoy. A LITTLE HOUSE CHRISTMAS, adapted by James DeVita, is inspired by the Christmas happenings in Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, and borrows Mrs. Oleson and Nellie Oleson from On the Banks of Plum Creek. The plot of the play revolves around a pre-Christmas party that is being thrown at the Ingalls' home. An unexpected storm threatens to cut off everybody's access to town, so the guests have to make a hurried departure and cut the party short. Continued rains and a ruined bridge threaten to ruin Christmas for Laura and Mary, until they come up with their own plan to preserve the magic of the holiday. (more...)

Aurora Theatre's Script Club to Examine Works by Thorton Wilder and Gertrude Stein Today

Berkeley's acclaimed Aurora Theatre Company presents the second Aurora Script Club meeting of the season with Gertrude Stein's Stein Times. Gertrude Stein, a contemporary and friend of Thornton Wilder, wrote numerous plays in addition to the other prolific written and artistic contributions she made in her life. Several of her short works (The Making of Americans: Being a History of a Family's Progress (1906-11); Do Let Us Go Away A Play (1916); A Family of Perhaps Three (1922); and A Circular Play (1930) ) will be read together to explore the parallels they have with the one-act plays of Wilder Times, revealing how she influenced, and conspired with, Thornton Wilder to give a brand new, and specifically American, dramatic form to their 20th century world. Aurora Theatre Company Education Director Michael Mansfield hosts this moderated discussion series. The Aurora Script Club was conceived and developed by Aurora Theatre Company Artistic Director Tom Ross. All of the Script Club selections for the season are plays that are penned by female playwrights. (more...)

Red Tape Theatre Announces New Playwright in Residence

Red Tape Theatre has announced that starting in January 2013, Brooke Allen will become their first playwright in residence as part of the newly revised Fresh Eyes Project. Formed in 2005, the Fresh Eyes Project has been a bold, new workshop process designed to create and develop plays that are innovative in form and subject. Over the years, it has assisted in the development of such projects as Caitlin Parish's A Twist of Water, Aaron Weissman's Egg & Alfie, Martin Zimmerman's Making of a Modern Folk Hero and Martyna Majok's Mouse in a Jar, which went on to be a Jeff Award winning production for Red Tape Theatre in 2009.
