As BWW previously reported, she remarked, 'The 1998 production of Cabaret, by Sam and Rob, is coming back to Broadway this month. With Alan! And with no less than Michelle Williams, who's always so beautiful on the big screen, as Sally. Just like last time, Studio 54 will be turned into the Kit Kat Klub. And I will be there opening night.' (more...)

Weimar Republic: The Cabaret
by Roundabout Theatre Company - Jul 2, 2014

The end of World War I in 1918 brought radical change to a defeated, disillusioned Germany. The entire population had experienced hunger, death, and violence. In October of that year, as the Americans brought renewed vigor to the fighting on the Western front, a largely communist revolt against the Kaiser and the war spread across Germany. Top military leaders showed no confidence in the monarchy. In early November, the Kaiser abdicated, and a leading socialist party declared a republic, thus bringing the Weimar Republic to power. The November 11 armistice was signed soon after. The war with the world had ended, but Germany's internal war was just beginning. (more...)

BWW Reviews: URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL is a Privilege to See
by Frank Benge - Aug 18, 2014

Two of my very favorite things are satire and black comedy. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL has been a favorite of mine since the show took home Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical back in 2002. It is a rarity in today's musical theatre - a truly original musical which is not based on existing source material. The show got its start in 1995 when Greg Kotis (book and lyrics) was a struggling student on a budget traveling in Europe and encountered pay-per-use toilets. It was then that the musical's central idea hit him: a future where toilets were controlled by a corporation with no concern for the poor. According to Kotis, the show 'was created in a spirit of defiance against what's typically offered up as stage worthy in America today.' (more...)

It stunned audiences on both sides of the Atlantic and challenged the idea of 'who owns Shakespeare?' In one of the schools workshops around the production, teachers heard one of their students, a girl, speak in public for the first time. It couldn't end there. (more...)
