Lesley Leighton, appointed Assistant Conductor of the chorus in July 2010, makes her Los Angeles Master Chorale conducting debut leading Hymn to St. Cecelia, one of two Britten works to be spotlighted. Michael Reidel reports in the NY Post today that the Shubert Organization is considering renaming one of its theaters after legendary producer/director Hal Prince in the near future. As Riedel quotes, Prince collaborator Stephen Sondheim has said of the honor: 'I find it astonishing, especially now that directors play so central a role in the success -- or failure of -- Broadway shows. Harold Prince is very much alive and well, and seeing as how he has won more Tony Awards than any other individual, I'd say . . . he deserves the nod.' (more...)

Producers Thomas Schumacher of Disney Theatrical Productions and Cameron Mackintosh are pleased to announce that Steffanie Leigh will star as 'Mary Poppins' in the North American tour of MARY POPPINS. Leigh, who previously understudied the title role in the touring production, replaces Caroline Sheen, who will play her final performance in Omaha at the Orpheum Theatre on Sunday, February 6th. Leigh officially takes over the role in Omaha on Tuesday, February 8th before the show arrives at the Opera House in Boston on Thursday, February 17th for a limited engagement of five weeks through March 20th. The opening night is Friday, February 18th at 8pm. The Boston engagement of MARY POPPINS is presented by arrangement with Broadway Across America - Boston and is a subscription offering of the Lexus Boston Area Dealers Broadway Across America - Boston Series. On Sunday February 6 LA's Next Great Stage Star 2011 held its finale at Sterling's Upstairs @ Vitello's beginning at 11:30 am. 20 contestants competed in a nonstop round and then the audience and judges voted for the top 5. Points were added together for the entire six weeks of the competition which began January 2. Those named were Michael David, Reba Buhr, Emily Goglia, Judy Mora and Matthew McFarland. There was a thrill-packed final round of singing and then Judy Mora emerged victoriously as the winner. James Lent served as musical director. (more...)

Producers Whoopi Goldberg and Stage Entertainment have announced that Tony Award-winner Victoria Clark will co-star as Mother Superior in the new Broadway musical, SISTER ACT, beginning preview performances on March 24, 2011 and opening on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at the Broadway Theatre (1681 Broadway). As previously announced, Olivier Award nominee Patina Miller will reprise her critically acclaimed performance as Deloris Van Cartier, which she originated in the West End production of SISTER ACT. This spring Arizona Theatre Company journeys to the New York boroughs and into Neil Simon's masterwork, LOST IN YONKERS, the fourth installment of ATC's AMERICA PLAYS! Celebrating Great American Stories series. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play, LOST IN YONKERS is as funny as it is poignant and is certain to leave you spellbound with laughter and tears. Featuring Tony Award-winner and Arizona favorite Judy Kaye, and directed by Samantha K. Wyer, LOST IN YONKERS plays in Tucson at the Temple of Music and Art from February 26 through March 19, 2011.
