MANON LESCAUT TonightMinnesota Opera Opens Premiere of MANON LESCAUT Tonight
by BWW News Desk - Sep 21, 2013

Minnesota Opera is pleased to announce its season opening, in which the irresistible lure of money seduces the beautiful Manon, triggering her downfall. But true love is her redemption in this soulful opera by the composer of La bohème, Madame Butterfly andTurandot. Manon Lescaut was Puccini's third opera and his first major success. Defending his work against another opera based on the 1731 novel by the Abbé Prévost, Puccini said, “Manon is a heroine I believe in, and therefore she cannot fail to win the hearts of the public. Why shouldn't there be two operas about Manon? A woman like Manon can have more than one lover.” He added, “Massenet feels it as a Frenchman, with powder and minuets. I shall feel it as an Italian, with a desperate Passion.” (more...)

BWW Reviews: Roberto Bolle And Friends GalaBWW Reviews: Roberto Bolle And Friends Gala
by Barnett Serchuk - Sep 20, 2013

That Roberto Bolle is the body beautiful, not to mention gorgeous, extraordinaire, beyond belief, is not to be questioned. If he took just one step to the right, you might call it exploitation or something closely resembling that. Mr. Bolle, wisely, did not take that slippery path. He remained an amiable, charming and silent host to the evening that bore his name, Roberto Bolle and Friends Gala. So, if he did take every opportunity to present his buff technique, there was nothing to do but sit back and enjoy it, or carp frequently at what was going on. (more...)

The Nature of 'Storytelling' Revealed in New BookThe Nature of 'Storytelling' Revealed in New Book
by BWW News Desk - Sep 20, 2013

Storytelling is a quintessential art. It is the conveyance of human experiences through written or verbal communication to engage the heart and the mind, and stimulate the imagination. No matter whether the tale is fact or fiction, the truths passed on all come within - from the soul - and it is this imbued spark that gives stories their resonance. Like all good storytellers, Dr. Constance Colon-Jones seeks to pass this on, to share what is hers to others, so that the tale may continue. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Houston Ballet's THE MERRY WIDOW is Opulently RomanticBWW Reviews: Houston Ballet's THE MERRY WIDOW is Opulently Romantic
by David Clarke - Sep 20, 2013

As a ballet, THE MERRY WIDOW is an adaptation of Franz Lehar's popular romantic operetta Die Lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow), which premiered in 1905. In the process of adapting the score for ballet, John Lanchbery and Alan Abott retained the style of Franz Lehar's orchestrations and included several of the well-known tunes from the operetta. Their score premiered in 1975 when The Australian Ballet, under the Musical Direction of John Lanchbery, produced the World Premiere production with choreography by Ronald Hynd and Scenario and Staging by Sir Robert Helpmann. This grandiose and radiant ballet of THE MERRY WIDOW had its Houston Ballet Premiere on September 17, 1995 in the Brown Theater. The Houston Ballet also performed it in 1999 and 2007. Now, in 2013, the lavish production is serving as Mireille Hassenboehler's gorgeous swan song and letter of admiration to the audiences of the Houston Ballet. (more...)
