AS THE CROW FALLS is Released
by BWW News Desk - May 11, 2016

The Kansas City mob was always thought to be a small group, but by the early 1970s, the FBI realized that the mob (La Cosa Nostra) in Kansas City had run Las Vegas since World War II ended. The KC mob was more powerful than big name crime families in other cities including New York and Chicago. This fascinating and often dangerous mob life inspired Don Maddux to write 'As the Crow Falls' (published by Xlibris). (more...)

BWW Review: Mad Cow's LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT is an Uneven American Masterpiece
by Matt Tamanini - Mar 28, 2016

Eugene O'Neill's epic LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT is undoubtedly one of the most venerated works of the American theatre. With a star-studded Broadway revival set to open in April, it is a show that is never far from the theatergoing public's consciousness. While that can be a blessing for theatre companies anxious to attract audiences based on the title's Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning resume, it can also mean that memories of previous incarnations can set the bar unattainably high. Orlando's Mad Cow Theatre has assembled an impressive cast for their production running through April 17th, however, for nearly all of the show's four-hour running timing, the four incredibly talented actors seem to be performing four very different versions of the play. Irrespective of each other, they each have moments where they are moving, and even mesmerizing, but when placed together into the show's larger context, the disjointed perspectives become distracting. From mismatched accents to the production's ever-shifting tone, it's difficult to hone in on director Mark Edward Smith's specific voice for this masterpiece of family drama. (more...)

BWW Review: Undeniably Tuneful THE SOUND OF MUSIC at The Fox Theatre
by Chris Gibson - Apr 29, 2016

Rodgers and Hammerstein's THE SOUND OF MUSIC is still popular today, and there's really no need to wonder why. The songs are undeniably familiar, and the story and characters go through a number of compelling moments. However, it does require a good, solid cast and sharp direction to live up to the expectations of all those folks who have seen the 1965 film Over and Over and over again. Thankfully, this touring company currently playing The Fox Theatre (through May 8, 2016) is more than up to the task. This classic still has its many charms. and holds up remarkably well despite its age and overexposure in various forms over the years. (more...)

BWW Review: Coyote Stageworks' AGNES OF GOD - An Emotional Powerhouse at the Annenberg
by David Green - Apr 25, 2016

AGNES OF GOD is challenging theatre at every level. It demands a lot of its audience. It demands its audience be engaged and active at every turn. It is both emotionally and intellectually stimulating and provocative. It is ninety-plus minutes of thought provoking dialogue with minimal action. One must listen. It asks a lot of questions and delivers few answers. It requires three exceptional actors with the dexterity to bounce effortlessly and honestly between strength and pathos and vulnerability, Over and Over again - to bring believability and life to an arduous load of complex dialogue.  It requires the deft hand of a skilled director to delicately weave these three divergent character arcs into a seamless singular story arc, where the story's quieter moments are equally as riveting as the more chaotic ones. Fortunately for desert audiences, Coyote Stageworks delivers on all counts. This AGNES OF GOD is well crafted, expertly acted and is cerebrally, spiritually, psychologically and emotionally fulfilling.  (more...)
