How has my life changed since the night of the Bobby G Awards ceremony? I have had some incredible opportunities. I was invited to sing to perform before the DCPA board, and at the Randy Weeks Memorial Golf Tournament, which raised more than $91,000 for the advancement of musical theatre for Colorado high-school students. Both events showed me what incredible people there are supporting the program, and high-school theatre. Otherwise, I have been very busy practicing and preparing music for New York. A Kickstarter campaign was launched on July 1, 2016, in order to raise funds and enable the organization to purchase materials in large quantities, thus making the subscription service more affordable for all. BWW Blog: Casey McGuire - Memorize!
by Guest Blogger: Casey McGuire - Jul 5, 2016

Memorization is what makes theatre; we memorize lines and cue and put everything together to tell a story, but in many cases, it is why a person doesn't do theatre. The big "M" word scares them away. Memorization can be tricky but you shouldn't be afraid of it because everything always seems to work out (at least in all my experiences they have). Here are some tips to help you memorize your lines faster. (more...)

BWW Review: BRIDGMAN|PACKER Pack Sex and Art Into 3-D Renderings
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jul 20, 2016

If we've been here before, then why aren't the returns diminishing? The sequence repeats itself all night long in continuous loops and yet the eye never wanders. To the contrary one is drawn in deeper with each new repetition. Is it the weather-beaten beauty of the performers and the total investment with which they infuse every gesture? Is it the fusion of technology, holograms, and art? Looking around at the audience in The Sheen Center on July 13th, 2016, one is taken by the fact that the patrons are mature in age and completely in sync with this new mode of technology. Going off of appreciation alone, it seems that there is not a luddite in the room for this multimedia spectacle of art that would not look out of place at Coachella. This is art that “younger audiences” think of when they ask for something cool. (more...)

BWW Review: MTW Delivers Great Big Stuff with DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS
by Don Grigware - Jul 12, 2016

Based on a 1980s film starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is terribly silly and much of the dialogue & lyrics imbued with an overabundance of sexual innuendos, but that's AOK, as this is not Stephen Sondheim, but a jazzy, feel good, laugh out loud type of show. As many times as I've seen it, I always fall directly into the most audience I'm hooked, especially if the two male leads are properly cast. In this new production at MTW, Davis Gaines plays Lawrence Jamison, the king of cons, and could not be more perfect. At his side is Benjamin Schrader as Freddy Benson, the rubber-faced comedic schmuck who pleads with Jamison to take him on and teach him the ropes, the tricks of the trade. These two head up a glorious cast under the uber skilled direction'choreography of Billy Sprague Jr., and what results is a triumphant hit for MTW... through July 24 only. (more...)

BWW Interview: SALENA WHALEN-STALKER Taps Her Way to the Stage

BWW Dance Review: BALLETX
by Barnett Serchuk - Jul 12, 2016

Sitting through BalletX's 10th anniversary season performance at Philadelphia's Wilma Theater on July 6, 2016, I was struck with some deep pangs of disappointment. It wasn't that the new works presented that evening were bad, quite the contrary. But how does one say that something more was expected, especially when reviewing a new Matthew Neenan production? BWW Review: Off The Wall Theatre Revisits the Human Condition in Wilder's THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Jul 1, 2016

Long ago and far away in an ice age near the fictional town of Excelsior, New Jersey, playwright Thornton Wilder placed the supposedly All American Antrobus family-two adults, two children and their luscious looking maid. They survive dinosaurs and disasters in The Skin of Our Teeth, Wilder's Pulitzer Prize Winning 1942 play at Off the Wall Theater (OTW) through July 3. Artistic Director Dale Gutzman assembles an eclectic, extensive cast transcending the floods, hurricanes, war and 5000 years of marriage, a true miracle, to relate Wilder's menagerie of time frames and philosophical journeys on how the human species copes over centuries. The Pit Announces Full Theatrical Run of ROOM 4
by BWW News Desk - Aug 4, 2016

The Academy Awards has a race problem. It's big. But the four black actors in Room 4 aren't particularly concerned with that, because they have a much bigger problem at hand. They've just realized they're stuck in a time loop, auditioning for the same 'Drug Dealer #2' role Over and Over. What once felt like a messed- up metaphor has become a literal existential nightmare. Get them out of there. (more...)

BWW Blog: Bob Marks - Building Your Book of Audition Songs
by Guest Blogger: Bob Marks - Aug 23, 2016

Even when an audition provides specific music to be prepared, you might be asked to 'bring your book.' Every performer requires a collection of songs that are ready to be sung at a moment's notice. In our industry, your 'book' is a physical binder that holds all of these songs, and is also the term for this repertoire of pieces that you have mastered and can perform with little or no preparation. BWW Review: Kate Baldwin & Graham Rowat Chart Out CONSTELLATIONS at Berkshire Theatre Group
by Justin J Sacramone - Aug 11, 2016

Nick Payne's Constellations uses the hypothetical existence of a multiverse and applies it to the coupling of Marianne and Roland Over and Over again. A multiverse is the scientific theory that challenges physics and suggests all consequences of our lives are living symmetrically on a plane and the outcome is an endless roll of the dice. We witness the action progressing them forward in life as it consistently resets, skews or diverts dramatically. Boy meets girl is no longer a simple narrative. What sounds like a storytelling gimmick, expediently becomes throbbing unsuspecting drama that is as intimate as is it vast. Perhaps I would have paid attention in high school science if it was taught to me this way. (more...)

BWW Interview: Katherine Bottoms of PETER AND THE STARCATCHER at Actors' Repertory Theatre Of Simi
by Cary Ginell - Aug 10, 2016

Today we meet Katherine Bottoms, a young actress who we hope you will be able to see on stage some day before fame and fortune takes her away from us. Katherine was born in Palm Springs but has lived in Santa Barbara most of her life. Her father and three uncles were actors so it was only natural that Katherine would become one as well. She performed in musical theater at Santa Barbara High School and was attending Santa Barbara City College when she decided acting was what she was going to do with her life. While in high school, she got a manager and was driving to auditions in Los Angeles so often, she was missing class, so she put off her career until later. Now, at 23, she feels she is ready, and has been making solid appearances in a number of local productions. Her life has been a procession of one show after another ('my longest break was maybe a month'), with her latest being the ARTS production of Peter and the Starcatcher (see our review in this week's Simi Valley Acorn). In the show, she plays Molly, a wide-eyed, independent 13-year-old girl who embarks on an adventure with her father to deliver a trunk of magic star dust to a far-off island. Katherine's bubbly personality and infectious giggle make it easy to accept her as a teenager, but this is only one aspect of her versatility as an actress. (more...)
