Goodman Theatre celebrates its 10th season in Chicago's North Loop Theatre District with a fresh take on an enduring masterpiece- Candide, Voltaire's effervescent, picaresque adventure, newly adapted and directed by Chicago's own Mary Zimmerman, the Goodman's Manilow Resident Director. A cast of 19 and an orchestra of 12, under the direction of Music Director Doug Peck, bring to life nearly 30 songs in Leonard Bernstein's glorious score, and recreate Voltaire's satirical story of Candide (Geoff Packard)-a young optimist shipwrecked, soldiered, swindled and separated (repeatedly) from his true love, Cunegonde (Lauren Molina). For this major revival, Zimmerman has tapped her signature design team-Daniel Ostling (Set), Mara Blumenfeld (Costumes), T.J. Gerkens (Lighting) and Richard Woodbury (Sound). Lincoln Center Theater has announced final casting for its upcoming production of John Guare's new play A FREE MAN OF COLOR. Justina Machada (HBO's Six Feet Under and Broadway's , In The Heights) and veteran actor John McMartin (Follies, Into The Woods, Showboat, Sweet Charity) will join Paul Dano, mos and Jeffrey Wright in the production, to be directed by George C. Wolfe. Also joining the cast of 32 will be Yao Ababio, Derric Harris, Esau Pritchett, Jerome Stigler and Senfaub Stoney. A FREE MAN OF COLOR will begin performances Thursday, October 21 at 8pm at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. Opening night is Thursday, November 18 at 6:45pm. (more...)

Executive Producer Lou Spisto today announced The Old Globe's 2011 Summer Season. Adrian Noble will return as the Artistic Director of the Shakespeare Festival and direct Shakespeare's The Tempest and Peter Shaffer's Amadeus. Presented in repertory in the outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, the Festival will also include Much Ado About Nothing directed by Ron Daniels. The season also features Hershey Felder in Maestro: The Art of Leonard Bernstein in the Old Globe Theatre. Preceding Bernstein is a 10-day limited engagement of Hershey Felder in George Gershwin Alone. The show opens in Issaquah on September 16 and runs through October 24, before moving to Everett and running October 29-November 21. MICHAEL CYRIL CREIGHTON'S online sitcom about a down on his luck theatre Box Office Manager, 'JACK IN A BOX', premieres Episode 15: The Buzz. In this episode, Jack is bombarded with phone calls, goes to a terrible audition and then has a 'physical' altercation with his agent, Gloria (played by Lusia Strus of Enron, The NY Neo-Futurists, Gus Van Sant's Restless). There are too many women in his life. The episode also features Hannah Bos (Founding Member of The Debate Society), Desiree Burch (The NY Neo-Futurists/The Soup Show), Livia Scott ('Live & Let Livia') and Mary Testa (Xanadu, Guys and Dolls, 42nd Street, On the Town).
