The Public Theater announced today that there will be a special family-friendly matinee of the free Shakespeare in the Park production of Into the Woods on Wednesday, August 22 at 3 p.m. at the Delacorte Theater. This matinee is designed to engage younger audiences and to serve families unable to attend evening performances. The 95-minute production will comprise act one only of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's beloved musical Into the Woods. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's beloved musical Into the Woods, the second show of The Public's 50th Anniversary season at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, began previews this week and will run for five weeks through Saturday, August 25. Featuring an all-star cast including Donna Murphy, Amy Adams, Denis O'Hare, and Jessie Mueller, there is already lots of buzz about a potential transfer to Broadway. Into the Woods is not the first musical that has played the Delacorte Theatre- in fact there is a long history of musicals that have played Central Park. Public Theater Executive Director Patrick Willingham announced last night from the Delacorte Theater stage that the Bernard and Anne Spitzer Charitable Trust has generously donated $4 million to The Public Theater to support free Shakespeare in the Park and the capital campaign for the revitalization of its landmark Astor Place building, which includes five theaters and Joe's Pub. Members of the Spitzer family were in the audience on Wednesday evening to enjoy the free Shakespeare in the Park production of Into the Woods. The Spitzers' first gift to the theater will be gratefully acknowledged with a plaque at the Delacorte Theater. (more...)

Theatre Under The Stars' (TUTS) Humphreys School of Musical Theatre (HSMT) is 'tickled pink to bring the charming hit show Legally Blonde the Musical back to Houston' in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the award-winning Humphreys School. Legally Blonde the Musical will "bend and snap" at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts on September 14 - 16, 2012 and feature an all-teen cast made entirely of local high school students. Celebration Theatre in association with DEMAND PRoductions and Peter Schneider have announced the first show of its celebratory 30th Anniversary Season, the world premiere musical, JUSTIN LOVE, with book by Patricia Cotter and David Elzer, story by David Elzer and Bret Calder, music by Lori Scarlett and David Manning and lyrics by Lori Scarlett. The show will be directed by Michael Matthews with choreography by Janet Roston and musical direction by Gregory Nabours. JUSTIN LOVE will begin previews on Friday, September 7, and will open on Friday, September 21, running through Sunday, November 18, 2012, at Celebration Theatre, 7051B Santa Monica Blvd in Hollywood.
