Always… Patsy Cline Opens Lyric Theatre's 2011 SeasonAlways… Patsy Cline Opens Lyric Theatre's 2011 Season
by BWW News Desk - Jan 5, 2011

Lyric Theatre, Oklahoma's leading professional theatre company, opens its 2011 Season with the country musical legend, Always... Patsy Cline. See 'the velvet-voice of country music' star, Patsy Cline, come to life this winter at Lyric Theatre's Plaza stage. This musical play, complete with down home country humor, true emotion and even some audience participation includes twenty-seven musical renditions of her unforgettable hits such as 'Crazy,' 'I Fall to Pieces,' 'Sweet Dreams,' 'Walking After Midnight' and 'Honky Tonk Merry Go Round.' The power of friendship between Patsy and her number one fan, Houston housewife, Louise Seger, is also explored. Having first heard Cline on 'The Arthur Godfrey Show' in 1957, Seger became an immediate and avid fan constantly hounding the local disc jockey to play Cline's records on the radio. Their relationship, which began as fan worship, evolved into one of mutual respect for one another. This endearing story combines humor with sincerity and gives fans, old and new, a chance to remember the most acclaimed female country vocalist of the 20th century. (more...)

Review - Richard Skipper as Carol Channing in ConcertReview - Richard Skipper as Carol Channing in Concert
by Ben Peltz - Jan 14, 2011

I imagine Richard Skipper must approach his embodiment of Carol Channing a bit differently than most successful female celebrity impersonators.  When doing Barbra or Eartha or Ethel there are certain idiosyncrasies one can latch onto and exaggerate as punch lines.  Channing, however, has always presented herself on stage as a sort of self-satire.  To broaden up what is already such an extreme can easily slip into vulgar mockery. If you find yourself venturing outside of New York, and you want to see some really good musical theater, what should you do? Allow me to suggest a visit to my neck o' the woods: A trip to Nashville might provide you with exactly what you seek. After all, in a city perhaps best known throughout the world as Music City USA, what else could you expect but some exceedingly well-cast, well-produced, well-played and well-sung musical theater? We're lousy with exceptional singers and musicians and, as a result, musical theater is alive and well - and thriving - in Nashville. And here's my list of the Best Musicals of 2010... (more...)
