Everyone's favorite 'Adelaide,' Faith Prince, will be reprising the role she made famous on Broadway in two concerts with the Orlando Philharmonic this October. Prince will star alongside Davis Gaines as Sky Masterson in a concert version of Guys and Dolls that will run at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center on October 9, 2010 and 2:00pm and 8:00pm. Christopher Wilkins conducts the concert, and Mad Cow Theatre's Alan Bruun will direct. (more...)

Based on Damon Runyon's short story The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown, Guys and Dolls tells the story of a group of small-time gamblers and the ladies in their lives. Nathan Detroit, the organizer of the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York, bets fellow gambler Sky Masterson that he can't make the next 'doll' he sees fall in love with him. The next 'doll' to enter happens to be the prim and proper neighborhood missionary, Miss Sarah Brown, and the stage is set for a heavy dose of high spirited entertainment set to the toe-tapping beat of Frank Loesser's superlative score. The New York Times reports today that Nathan Lane may be teaming up with Douglas Carter Beane following his run in The Addams Family for The Nance, a new play 'about a performer who played the role of the nance in burlesque shows in the early 20th century.' The play centers on a nance (or 'nancy boy'), who performs at the downtown burlesque club, The Irving, 'during the era when Mayor Fiorello La Guardia was moving to ban burlesque in New York City.' The event also raised funds for the 2011 return of Sing for Hope Street Pianos, a public art installation that brought 60 upright pianos to the streets of New York this past summer, and embodies Sing for Hope's mission of making art available to all. This past Friday afternoon I read that this person has been meeting with producers to consider the possibility of appearing on Broadway, in order to, 'expand her brand by taking to the stage.'  That evening I heard the 82-year-old Marilyn Maye, after nearly ninety minutes of superlative interpretations of musical theatre classics from the likes of Jerry Herman, Frank Loesser and Kander and Ebb, tell her completely enthralled audience that it's still her ambition to one day be on Broadway, before emoting a beautifully vulnerable 'Losing My Mind' that segued into a classy and celebratory 'I'm Still Here' that brought just about the entire packed Metropolitan Room house to its feet in one of the most adoring ovations I've ever seen.
