SOUND OFF: GLEE Goes Three Ways
by Pat Cerasaro - Mar 5, 2014

Gloria! GLEE is nearing graduation season, complete with senior flings, faculty faux pas and Fat Tuesday-befitting festivities on the NYC side of the show, as well. Last night's ep gave us some major '80s gems, '90s lite rockers, '00 anthems and even an obscure '60s tune, too, showing the dependable diversity of not only the music but the general themes of the one and only hit musical dramedy series in history. Heart to The Supremes to Simple Minds, Wilson Phillips and Destiny's Child - it was a delight. (more...)

InDepth InterView: Lea Michele Confirms FUNNY GIRL Revival! Plus, Talks New Solo Album LOUDER, GLEE S5, LEGENDS OF OZ: DOROTHY'S RETURN, WICKED & More
by Pat Cerasaro - Mar 4, 2014

Today we are particularly thrilled to present a wide-ranging conversation with one of the most attention-grabbing and notable Broadway/Hollywood crossover stars of the new millennium all about her theatre past, GLEE present and potentially spectacular future - the charismatic and committed Lea Michele. Sparing some precious moments while promoting her new solo album release, LOUDER, Michele comments on not only her studio work and the current season of her FOX hit musical dramedy series but also sheds some light on much more, including sharing first news of the new stage revival of Funny Girl currently in planning stages following the rights being purchased by GLEE creator and mastermind Ryan Murphy, set to mirror the Season Five storyline of GLEE itself as it presents the spectacular theatrics, unforgettable songs and backstage backstabbing involved with the Funny Girl revival starring Rachel Berry (aka Michele). Additionally, Michele analyzes some of her favorite tracks on LOUDER and offers a glimpse into the creative process in creating some of the album's standout tracks such as 'Cue The Rain' and 'The Bells'. Plus, Michele opens up about her role alongside fellow Broadway heavyweights Megan Hilty and Bernadette Peters in the hotly anticipated new animated movie musical LEGENDS OF OZ: DOROTHY'S RETURN and clues us in on what we can expect from the multimedia extravaganza. Furthermore, Michele previews some upcoming GLEE showstoppers-to-be including two songs penned by Stephen Sondheim - 'No One Is Alone' from INTO THE WOODS and 'Not While I'm Around' from SWEENEY TODD - as well as the re-teaming with SPRING AWAKENING star Skylar Astin, while also offering the 411 on the show's big new move to a primary NYC focus. All of that, thoughts on GLEE co-star Idina Menzel's FROZEN performance on this week's Academy Awards telecast, opinions on a new LES MISERABLES revival, a look ahead to her upcoming autobiography BRUNETTE AMBITION and much, much more! EXCLUSIVE: FUNNY GIRL 50th Anniversary Original Broadway Cast Recording Set for 4/29 Splashy Remastered Release
by BWW Special Coverage - Mar 25, 2014

It's hard to believe that it has been 50 years since Barbra Streisand portrayed Fanny Brice in the 1964 Broadway stage production of Funny Girl, and 46 years since she reprised her critically acclaimed role for the 1968 feature film, winning her an Oscar. The reason that it's so hard to believe is because she's still as relevant as ever and has to be the greatest Broadway export of all time. On April 29, Capitol/UMe will release the Gold-certified Funny Girl: Original Broadway Cast Recording in a 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition boxed set with a digitally remastered CD and vinyl LP, as well as a 48-page book featuring exclusive photos from the production and a new essay by Jay Landers, her longtime A&R executive, who has worked with her on many recordings. SOUND OFF: GLEE 100! The Original Ten Return
by Pat Cerasaro - Mar 19, 2014

The Beatles once sang, 'You say goodbye / I say hello,' and so it goes with the gang on FOX's hit musical dramedy GLEE - new beginnings; new endings; and, well, New Directions, too. GLEE's '100' episode reunited the original crew - minus, of course, the tragically deceased Cory Monteith, who played headlining football hero Finn and who was paid elegant tribute with grace and class both last week and this week in his absence - with the addition of the new gleeks added in the ensuing seasons. While many of the new stars never managed to capture the lighting in a bottle that the originals commanded, it is undeniable that they each provided their own special spice in the GLEE stew and a handful broke out to considerable prominence on Broadway and beyond, particularly in the case of Darren Criss aka Blaine. Nonetheless, what made us all fall in love with GLEE in the first place, lo, more than five seasons ago, was that original recipe - and it's still as savory, spicy, sweet and mouth-watering as ever, as last night's spectacular celebratory entry showcased in spades; and hearts, too. But, yet, we are forced to ask: is this the end or the beginning? (more...)

Glee-Cap: Frenemies
by Robert Lawlor - Feb 25, 2014

Gleeks, as your BWW.com Glee BFF, I'm totes happy to welcome you back. Now, as you're BFF, I have to warn you that tonight is all about the totes anti-BFF known as the frenemy. Now, we all know about frenemies - I mean, come on. Tonight, some of our favorite glee clobbers get their frenemy on. Let's just hope it's not Olympic style frenemy - no whacks to the knee, please. Glee is back, y'all. Santana deals with a pretty racist customer at the diner, and is feeling not exactly quite so awesome. Rachel attempts to build up Santana's confidence and invites her to join her for her cover shoot at New York magazine as a model for the shoot. Ooh, smell that Pezberry friendship. Tina and Artie meet for their usual Tuesday lunch, while Tina laments being put on the waiting list at Brown. Artie tries to cheer Tina up by dedicating their remaining Tuesday lunches to music to inspire Tina to be more positive about her future. What better way to kick off this than with 'Whenever I Call You Friend'. Sue challenges Artie and Tina's friendship by revealing that they are tied for valedictorian, and will compete for the top spot by giving their speeches to a panel of judges. (more...)
