How exactly does Curly know the height of an elephant's eye? I don't mean to doubt the intelligence or inquisitiveness of the guy, but if I asked a pre-statehood Oklahoma cowboy how high the corn has grown, the first response I'd expect wouldn't be a comparison to the height of a proboscidea native to Africa and Asia. Perhaps he found a picture book in some public library, or maybe that famous Thomas Edison film of the electrocution of Topsy, the Coney Island elephant, had made its way to a local picture house. Dancers Over 40 Presents 'Jack Cole' at Symphony Space 10/13

Dancers Over 40 begin the second season of its popular series of panels and performances featuring Broadway and Film director/choreographer Jack Cole with 'Jack Cole, Alive and Kicking' on Monday, October 13th at 8:00pm (New Time) at The Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway at 95th Street. It will be hosted by legendary television talk show host Dick Cavett. Jack Cole gave Broadway, film and television a vocabulary and style of movement that is still imitated today. Protégés Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera, Carol Haney and Bob Fosse have passed down his legacy, and his influence can still be seen. The popularity of these panels exposes a need within the theatrical/dance community to preserve the History, Legacy and Lives of dancers throughout the Golden Years of Theatre and Dance. (more...)

Gerald Schoenfeld, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of The Shubert Organization, Inc., a theatre organization engaged in the ownership and operation of legitimate theatres in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington, D.C. died suddenly at his home in Manhattan on Tuesday, November 25, according to Sam Rudy, a spokesperson for The Shubert Organization. Philip J. Smith and Robert E. Wankel Named New Heads of Shubert Organization

The New York Times is reporting that Philip J. Smith was named today the chairman of both the Shubert Organization and Foundation , a position many consider to the most powerful of all in the theatrical world. Mr. Smith, 77, the organization's president for the past dozen years, is taking over the same job that his longtime friend and mentor. The paper also reports that Robert E. Wankel, was named co-chief executive officer along with Mr. Smith and president. Mr. Wankel, who will turn 62 on Friday, was also elected to the board of directors. (more...)

HAIR Having Trouble Raising Money, 'I Will Capitalize HAIR in the End' says Producer McCann

In a feature story in the New York Times about the effect of the recession and Wall Street slide on both ends of the theatre business - ticket sales, and those raising producer dollars, they note that Elizabeth I. McCann, lead producer for HAIR has only raised $3 million of the $6.5 million needed to capitalize the production which is due to start rehearsals next month on Broadway. 'I'll go on record and say I will capitalize 'Hair' in the end. But it's very tough.' said McCann to the paper, however. (more...)
