Script Match for Theatre Students & Professionals Launches

Script Match, www.scriptmatch.com, has launched the first phase of its website along with a funding campaign to finance the development of the remaining phases of the site. The Company's mission is to simplify the process of finding scripts, allowing theatre professionals and students to spend less time searching and more time creating. The web application will make the process of finding scripts simple and efficient. Whether it is a professional actor looking for audition material, a student looking for scene work, a producer looking for a show to put up, or anyone at all looking for plays, musicals, or monologues, the site will be an invaluable resource. Chiori Miyagawa's THIS LINGERING LIFE to Receive NY Premiere at HERE, Begin. 9/12

Cake Productions has announced the New York premiere of This Lingering Life, an epic comedy with grave tragedies by Chiori Miyagawa. The play enjoyed its world premiere at Z Space in San Francisco in June where The San Francisco Examiner called it "a funny, wise, philosophical and thought-provoking puzzle," while The San Francisco Bay Guardian said it was "remarkably successful, and cumulatively powerful." Directed by Cat Miller, this is the inaugural production of the Company's 5th anniversary season. Performances will begin on Friday, September 12th with an official opening set for Thursday, September 18th at HERE. The production is scheduled to run through Saturday, October 4th. (more...)

The August broadcasts of The New York Philharmonic This Week - the weekly radio series of concerts and recordings by the New York Philharmonic, hosted by Alec Baldwin -- begin with Music Director Alan Gilbert conducting the New York Philharmonic in the opening program of The Beethoven Piano Concertos: A Philharmonic Festival, featuring the 2014-14 season Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Yefim Bronfman as soloist. Over the course of the three-week festival Mr. Bronfman performs the complete Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle as well as the Triple Concerto with Principal Cello Carter Brey and Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow in the final Philharmonic appearance of his 34-year tenure. The festival also features the World Premieres of Lyra by Anthony Cheung and Songs by Sean Shepherd, both commissioned by the New York Philharmonic as part of The Marie-Jose?e Kravis Prize for New Music, pairing the master composer's concertos with new commissions now entering the repertoire. Just In From the Musicians Union: Met Orchestra Musicians Blame Peter Gelb; Detail Plan to Save $20M

Local 802, American Federation of Musicians, and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra musicians today have commenced negotiations with Met Opera management including General Manager Peter Gelb. The union and the musicians released the attached report detailing the failed management and flawed artistic vision of Gelb during his 8-year tenure at the helm of the Met. The report analyzes the dismal reception of Gelb's expensive new productions by opera critics and patrons and also recommends specific strategies the Met could employ to save $20 Million annually by curtailing Gelb's lavish spending and realizing scheduling efficiencies. CABARET LIFE NYC: Anatomy of a Duo Show--Classy, Entertaining, Yet Flawed KT Sullivan/Jeff Harnar Sondheim Set at the Beechman Is All About Choices

The current Stephen Sondheim tribute show, Our Time, starring KT Sullivan and Jeff Harnar at the Laurie Beechman (which I attended on July 9 and 16; there are two more Wednesday performances at 6pm on August 6, 13), is a charming, classy, and entertaining affair. But it also includes enough flaws in execution that prevent it from being truly great. For one thing, it doesn't really feel like a duo show. It's more like two solo performances within one show, where the performers fit in a couple of numbers together to justify the concept. A critique of the Sullivan/Harnar Sondheim set provides an interesting opportunity to analyze the anatomy of a duo show and the choices that can make it work—or not. (more...)
