EXCLUSIVE: Regent's Park Theatre's INTO THE WOODS to Play Central Park's Delacorte Theater in 2012

BroadwayWorld.com has learned that the hit open-air production of INTO THE WOODS that played London's Regent's Park Theatre in 2011 is now planning for a transfer to Central Part's Delacorte Theater as part of the Public Theater's Summer 2012 programming. Casting is said to be underway already for the role of 'The Witch' and that the producers are seeking a big name. Nothing officially has been announced on a possible transfer, as The Public is expecting to announce the 2012 summer season at the Delacorte sometime next month. The Public Theatre had no comment by press time. (more...)

Idina Menzel to Appear at the Ravinia Festival This Summer

Ravinia Festival today announced the show-stopping Broadway superstar and star of television hit Glee Idina Menzel will make her Ravinia debut on Sunday, July 8. The concert, featuring the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, will be led by renowned composer and conductor Marvin Hamlisch, who returns to the festival for the first time since 2001. The show is created, written and hosted by Scott Siegel for The Town Hall. Initial casting includes Alice Ripley, the Tony® Award winning star of Next to Normal, Tom Wopat (Tony® Award nominated for his role of Frank Butler in Annie Get Your Gun revival/Catch Me if You Can), Kerry O'Malley (On a Clear Day…Annie Get Your Gun revival) and Noah Racey (Curtains), who will also choreograph. Today in 1958, Tony Award-winner Bebe Neuwirth was born. Neuwirth made her Broadway debut in the role of Sheila in A Chorus Line in 1980. She later appeared in revivals of Little Me (1982) Sweet Charity (1986), for which she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and Damn Yankees (1994). 1996 saw her play the role of Velma Kelly in the Broadway revival of Chicago. That role brought her her greatest stage recognition to date, and several awards including the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Neuwirth would later return to the still-running revival of Chicago in 2006, this time in the role of Roxie Hart. (more...)

I saw over a hundred shows again this year, and have decided to make a list of musicals as well as a list of comedies and dramas, which will be lumped together to form two different top eleven lists (in tribute to Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap) of 2011. All of these productions greatly entertained me in one way or another during the past year But, instead of me rehashing every single production, I'll just write up my lists for the year. I saw slightly fewer show than last year, but times are tough and we all should probably expect a certain amount of attrition (all lists are in no particular order) in this rough fiscal year. But, even in the toughest of times there are always the Arts to take us to a different place, away from our worries and strife. (more...)

Producers of the five-time Tony Award nominated hit musical ROCK OF AGES have announced that Genson Blimline will take over the role of "Lonny" role beginning today, Monday, December 19. Mitchell Jarvis, who has starred in ROCK OF AGES since it opened on Broadway in 2009 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, is taking a leave of absence from the show to take part in the Alley Theatre production of The Toxic Avenger in Houston, Texas.
