On the occasion of the 104th anniversary of Katherine Dunham's birth, Museum of the Moving Image will present a work-in-progress screening of a new documentary about the pioneering modern dancer and choreographer, by renowned actor and director Terry Carter (Battlestar Galactica, Julia), and followed by a town-hall discussion about Dunham's legacy with Carter and two celebrated Dunham dancers, Julie Belafonte and Dr. Glory Van Scott. The discussion will be moderated by Warrington Hudlin, a Museum trustee and former Dunham drummer. The program today, June 22, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. is part of Changing the Picture, sponsored by Time Warner, Inc., an ongoing series that celebrates and explores the work of film and television artists of color who are bringing diverse voices to the screen. Hakkasan Las Vegas at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino will welcome top electronic music stars when they take over the nightlife mecca with a five-day, action-packed lineup Wednesday, June 19 through Sunday, June 23. In honor of the eventful weekend of Electronic Daisy Carnival, Las Vegas' hottest new nightclub will not only have world-renowned DJs spinning for the masses in the main room. In addition, it will transform the Ling Ling Club into an extension of the madness with even more artist programming. The third level nightclub, known for hosting open format artists, will welcome electronic music sensations for the first time giving clubgoers multiple opportunities to see their favorite turntable maestros under one roof. Award-winning theatre, opera, and film director Julie Taymor will be honored at the 2013 Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art First Awards at the Brooklyn Museum on June 13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The award, which honors women who have broken gender barriers to make remarkable contributions in their fields, will be bestowed on Taymor, winner of the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 1998. It will be presented by Museum Trustee Elizabeth A. Sackler and followed by a conversation between Taymor and feminist icon Gloria Steinem. (more...)
