Music Director Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic, America's oldest orchestra, come to Walt Disney Concert Hall in the final event of the LA Phil's 2011/12 Visiting Orchestras series, tonight, May 9, at 8 pm. Virtuoso pianist Yefim Bronfman joins the program, performing the West Coast premiere of Piano Concerto No. 2, by New York Philharmonic Composer-in-Residence Magnus Lindberg. Also on the program are Dvorak's Carnival Overture and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4. Though Gilbert has previously appeared at Walt Disney Concert Hall (WDCH), most recently during the 2006/07 season, the performance will be the New York Philharmonic's WDCH debut. (more...)

Miller Theatre at Columbia University School of the Arts has announced its 2012-13, 24th Season. Including LE POČME HARMONIQUE IN "VENEZIA," on opening night, eight intriguing composer portraits, featuring John Cage, Jonathan Harvey, Olga Neuwirth, Sofia Gubaidulina, Enno Poppe, Rebeecca Saunders, Oliver Knussen and Julio Estrada. Bach, Revisted, highlights innovators, baroque and modern alike, featuring Jennifer Koh teaming up with mentor Jaime Laredo, harpsichordist Kristian Bezuidenhout and Ensemble Signal playing Bach, Rebel and Michael Gordon, and pianist Christopher Taylor juxtaposing Bach and Rzewski. Producers Scott Landis and Philip Morgaman have announced that EVER AFTER, a new musical based on the 20th Century Fox Film, will open on Broadway in the 2013-2014 season following a pre-Broadway engagement to be announced. The production will be directed and choreographed by three-time Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall. EVER AFTER features music by Zina Goldrich and book & lyrics by Marcy Heisler, who recently won the 2012 Kleban Prize for Musical Theatre for most promising musical theatre lyricist. Chiquinha Gonzaga, (1847/1935) was the first woman to compose for the musical theatre in Brazil. Chiquinha was an active citizen, involved in all kinds of social movements that took place during her age in Brazil, such as the Abolition of Slavery and even the Republican movement. Chiquinha is most known for her works for the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, such as Ó Abre Alas, and theatrical composition as FORROBODÓ, which opened at the begining of the last century, on 11th June, 1912. The show had an extraordinary run of 1500 performances. Next month FORROBODÓ will be revived ( the opening night will be on 11th, June, 2012) with a new production in Rio de Janeiro, brought by Thiago Cantarelli and Vitavision Audiovisual Ltda, with the Musical Direction of Roberto Carelli, also in charge for the new orchestration of the score (based on Gonzaga's originals). After last year's sold-out, earthquake relief fundraising performances, AYIKODANS returns to South Florida to once again thrill audiences with the world premiere of "Anmwey Haiti Manman" (Cry Haiti Mother), a moving piece commissioned by the Arsht Center, and "Danse de L'Araignee" (Dance of the Spider), created by the company's founder and choreographer, Jeanguy Saintus. The 3rd annual fundraising event TWENTYWONDER, A Carnival of the Mind, presented by Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles (DSALA) returns to the Doll Factory (1910 West Temple Street) and will be hosted again by the famed L.A. Derby Dolls on Saturday, July 7. The evening will be a bursting expo of art, science, music and comedy, plus an all-star roller derby bout featuring the L.A. Derby Dolls vs. the San Diego Derby Dolls. Proceeds will benefit DSALA's efforts to support those born with Trisomy 21/Down syndrome living in greater Los Angeles. (more...)
