Catherine Zeta-Jones Hosts Benefit Paying Tribute to Hollywood and Broadway

Stars from Hollywood and Broadway came together tonight for a one-of-a-kind performance featuring some of the biggest names from stage and screen to benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF). Catherine Zeta-Jones returned to host the evening, marking the 6th anniversary of the event and raising $1 million. Funds raised during the evening support the numerous essential health and social services the MPTF provides to more than 60,000 entertainment industry members every year. (more...)

Photo Flash: 42nd Street Moon Presents THREE SISTERS, 11/30-12/18

42nd Street Moon presents the American premiere of a full production of THREE SISTERS, with music by Jerome Kern, and book/lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. San Francisco audiences first enjoyed this little-known Kern and Hammerstein musical when 42nd Street Moon's Lost Musical Series presented the American premiere in 1995, in a concert format. With the help of a recent National Endowment for the Arts Grant, the company is now able to mount the first full production ever seen in the United States. Low-priced previews begin November 30, and the show opens on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 6 pm at the Eureka Theatre. It runs through December 18. (more...)

Kathleen Marshall-Helmed DINER Heading to Broadway in Spring 2013!

BASE Entertainment has just announced that DINER, a new musical based on the critically acclaimed 1982 film with a book by Academy Award winner and original DINER screenwriter Barry Levinson and music & lyrics by 9-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow, will have its pre-Broadway world premiere at San Francisco's SHN Curran Theatre (445 Geary Street). Directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall, DINER will play a strictly limited four week engagement from Tuesday, October 23, 2012, through Sunday, November 18, 2012, with an opening night of Friday, November 2, 2012. Due to these confirmed San Francisco dates DINER will now bow on Broadway in the spring of 2013, instead of the fall of 2012 as previously announced. BWW Reviews: BABES IN HOLLYWOOD Takes Audiences On a Nostalgia-Fueled Sentimental Journey

Granted, Babes in Hollywood isn't for all theater audiences-although, frankly, it should be┬ůwhat's with you people?-and you'll certainly love it more if you're at least somewhat informed about the Garland/Rooney film oeuvre or the legendarily close relationship the two young stars forged as children and continued throughout their lives. Although that friendship was abruptly ended in 1969 when Garland died in London (I remember reading the news in the Memphis Press-Scimitar as a sixth grader), I've no doubt Mickey Rooney still has conversations with his old pal, somewhere within the recesses of his memory and his heart. John Tartaglia- Helmed BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE Reading in the Works

As BroadwayWorld previously announced, Gerald Goehring, Michael F. Mitri and Dorothy Berloni are developing BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE, a new Broadway musical based on the popular 2000 novel by Kate DeCamillo. Casting for a developmental reading is currently underway and set to take place in early March. This is set to be followed by an out of town engagement and Broadway production, the timing of which will be confirmed at a later date. (more...)
