by BWW News Desk - Aug 29, 2015

FREEPORT, N.Y. - On May, 1941, author Helias Doundoulakis was a boy from a tiny village in Crete, when he faced an unexpected threat - the invasion of the Axis powers. In his newest book, the German translation of 'Trained to be an OSS Spy' (published by Xlibris), the author chronicles his training in one of the key intelligence agencies in World War II, his experience in espionage, and his remarkable metamorphosis from boy to man, man to soldier, and soldier to spy. BWW Review: Mark Nadler Launches New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits Series at Metropolitan Room In Tempestuous, Hilarious, Whip-Smart StyleBWW Review: Mark Nadler Launches New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits Series at Metropolitan Room In Tempestuous, Hilarious, Whip-Smart Style
by Alix Cohen - Aug 29, 2015

Back in January, BroadwayWorld's lead cabaret reviewer Stephen Hanks announced he was giving up critiquing shows to start his own company, Cabaret Life Productions, through which he would publicize, promote, and help book cabaret performers, and also produce cabaret shows. Hanks' first major production out of the box is a monthly series at the Metropolitan Room called New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits, that features talented artists recreating award-winning or highly-praised shows we wish we'd seen--a really good idea. Hanks' series launched Wednesday night with Mark Nadler's award-winning 2003 show Tschaikowsky (And Other Russians). The Metropolitan Room was filled to the gills and abuzz with anticipation, as most of the audience was only familiar with the show's second-hand praise and/or the CD version of Nadler's performance. BWW Book Review: Alex Sheremet's Insightful WOODY ALLEN: REEL TO REALBWW Book Review: Alex Sheremet's Insightful WOODY ALLEN: REEL TO REAL
by Chris Gibson - Aug 28, 2015

One of the things I truly enjoy about being a critic is not just the fact that I get to cover the St. Louis theater scene, but also that I receive countless opportunities to review other mediums within the artistic world of creation. I've had the request to deliver my thoughts and opinions on cOncerts, CDs, DVDs, art, and books. The printed word is something I've always enjoyed, and when that book cOncerns music, theater or film, it touches on subjects that are especially near and dear to my heart. So, when I was contacted by Ascot Media Group about Alex Sheremet's ebook, Woody Allen: Reel to Real (Take2 Publishing), I naturally jumped at the chance. Not only because I've always admired Woody's movies, but because I feel he's never been given a truly honest and thorough examination of his vast body of work. Writer Alex Sheremet has taken on the task, and since it is truly a digi-dialogue, it will be an ever evolving piece that will continue to grow as Allen continues to make films, and as discussions occur cOncerning their validity and worth. Broadway Veterans Round Out Cast of Arena Stage's Reimagined OLIVER!Broadway Veterans Round Out Cast of Arena Stage's Reimagined OLIVER!
by BWW News Desk - Aug 28, 2015

Molly Smith directs her 30th production as Artistic Director of Arena Stage with a gritty and relevant take on the Tony Award-winning musical Oliver!, blending the chaotic worlds of 19th-century Victorian London with 2015 London. Smith's new in-the-round staging infuses a modern edge to the classic musical about an innocent orphan thrown into the dark world of double-dealing thieves and conmen, highlighting the disparity between classes and dangerous life on London's streets today. Featuring a remarkable score including 'You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two,' 'Consider Yourself,' 'Where is Love?' and 'Food, Glorious Food,' Oliver! runs October 30, 2015-January 3, 2016 in the Fichandler Stage at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater.
