BWW Review: NINE WINNING ONE-ACTS Play at Group rep
by Don Grigware - Jul 26, 2016

Evenings of short one-acts are the rage at Equity-waiver theatres! In the black box theatre upstairs at Group rep you you are invited to come see Nine Winning One-Acts, plays that stretch a mere ten-fifteen minutes in length. The mini plays were chosen from over 160 entries from across the United States and written by various unknown playwrights. The evening is divided into two acts with five plays comprising Act One and four in Act Two. There is no single theme running through them, so if I had to describe the conflicts ...why ... life, death, dating, marriage, love, gay relationships, infidelity, euthanasia...and even cat abuse, though mild, thrown into the fray. The evening is Group rep's way of utilizing more company actors and directors, many of whom work less on the theatre mainstage, and for the most part, it's pleasantly stimulating and entertaining fare. BWW Review: GREASE Plays it Cool at The Academy Playhouse
by Kristen Morale - Jul 26, 2016

Right on the heels of A Chorus Line's final performance last weekend, Grease continues a wonderful summer season at the Playhouse by bringing youthful energy and pizazz to a show that is on almost everyone's list of favorite musicals. This production brings together a rather large cast whose energy and eagerness to present what they have all been working so hard on is evident in the characters they play in the midst of all the hullaballoo and teenage angst that Grease already is. BWW Review: Magical THE WIZARD OF OZ at Theatre By The Sea
by Andria Tieman - Jul 26, 2016

It's a bit of a risky proposition to take on a classic story that is a huge part of most people's childhoods. Do you try to change it up? Do you try to keep it true to the movie or book? How do you capture the wonder that a child would feel seeing it for the first time?  I don't know exactly how one does that, but Theatre by the Sea certainly managed it handily with their new production of THE WIZARD OF OZ.  Even a story as well-known as The Wizard of Oz seemed fresh and new but still perfectly timeless.  Fantastic performances, amazing vocal talents and elaborate sets and special effects take this world of imagination and bring it right to life. BWW Review: Quotidian's THE LADY WITH THE LITTLE DOG a Gorgeous Chamber Piece
by Andrew White - Jul 25, 2016

The Lady with the Little Dog is one of Chekhov's most beloved short stories, and it is especially gratifying to see that Director/Designer Stephanie Mumford has taken The Lady with the Little Dog and created an intimate one-hour visit to late 19th-century Russia. Beginning in an idyllic resort on the Black Sea, Mumford uses live music from the period - performed impeccably by Christine Khrarazian, accompanied by pianist Zachary Roberts-and a sequence of film footage and projections of seascapes by the Russian artist Aivazovsky to bring us into Chekhov's world. BOOB TREK! Hotsy Totsy Burlesque's Tribute to Star Trek
by BWW News Desk - Jul 25, 2016

Before James T. Kirk was the Captain of the Enterprise, there was Captain Christopher Pike… but that was before the debilitating accident that left him unable to speak or move. Now, Captain Pike lives on the planet of Talos IV (see The Menagerie - Classic Trek Season 1 Episodes 11 & 12) and the Talosians are able to alter human brain waves, allowing Captain Pike to live out the rest of his life in a virtual fantasy land of his own design. The Talosions are also obsessed with sex (watch the episode and see for yourself); with this in mind, every month Captain Pike creates an imaginary burlesque show for the Talosians, as a way of saying thank you. But today, something has gone horribly wrong, someone who he has not imagined has infiltrated the show, her name is Lwaxana Troi, daughter of the Fifth House, holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed. She has come to rescue Captain Pike from his life of fantasies and offer him a real woman's love.  The question is, does he want it? (more...)
