Reasons to Be Pretty - 2011 - West End History , Info & More

Almeida Theatre
Almeida St, The Angel, London N1 1TA, United Kingdom London

Greg is overheard admitting that his girlfriend Steph is no beauty, but that he wouldn't change her for the world. She is devastated; he can't quite see what he’s done wrong. Meanwhile, Greg's best friend Kent alternates between boasting about how gorgeous his wife, Carly, is and chasing after a hot new colleague.

Reasons To Be Pretty examines our perception of beauty and asks whether it is as much of a curse to be conventionally attractive as it is to be considered ugly. This is the final part of Neil LaBute's trilogy about society's obsession with looks following The Shape of Things, which received its World premiere at the Almeida in 2001 and Fat Pig, which was a West End hit in 2008.

Nine Letters is A Film That Isolates The Feelings Of Moving To New York City
by Stephi Wild - Feb 6, 2018

Cristina Muller's film Nine Letters uses a minimalist documentary style to emphasize the conflicting feelings of moving to a cosmopolitan new city. Muller uses imagery and sound from around New York City to enhance the sentiments of nine letters that are read as voiceover. The letters span from 1930 to 2016 and show the perspective of a diverse group of immigrants. The film emphasizes the repetitive nature of the city with long shots of people exiting subway cars and walking across bridges and streets. There also exist moments of unique pause like sitting at a cold window, on a winter evening, as the sun sets. The observations made by the writers of each letter are able to breathe over the imagery and sounds Muller layers, giving the viewer time to absorb each letter. Nine Letters expresses how moving to New York City comes with an intensity and lightness that can be reflected back into the constant state of being alive.

It may not be as riotously funny as The Irish and How They Got Way was,” says Maine State Music Theatre's Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark, but I know from experience that the audience will leave the theatre exhilarated!” Clark, who will co-produce the show with Anita Stewart, Artistic Director of Portland Stage, describes the musical revue as “a collection of vignettes, each of which plays out before the next one begins.
