The Canadian Opera Company's iconic double-bill of Béla Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle and Arnold Schoenberg's Erwartung returns to the company's mainstage to close its 2014/2015 season. COC Music Director Johannes Debus conducts both operas for the first time, leading the COC Orchestra through these visceral and haunting scores, all brought to life in a mind-bending and gravity-defying production by world-renowned Canadian artistic visionary Robert Lepage. Bluebeard's Castle is sung in Hungarian and Erwartung is sung in German, both with English SURTITLESTM, and runs for only seven performances on May 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 23, 2015 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Renowned director Moises Kaufman returns to BAM (The Laramie Project, 2013 Winter/Spring) to direct this show which has delighted and enlightened audiences from Kansas City, to LA, La Jolla, and Washington, DC. An epic tale of friendship set against the backdrop of the sweeping American West, Abundance will be directed by TACT Co-Artistic Director Jenn Thompson, who directed last season's production of William Inge's Natural Affection. Due to predicted extreme weather conditions and travel disruptions, the New York Philharmonic has had to cancel two rehearsals for the program of Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, January 29 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, January 30 at 11:00 a.m.; and Saturday, January 31 at 8:00 p.m., to be conducted by David Robertson. This has necessitated some changes in repertoire. Also due to the changes in rehearsal schedule, the Open Rehearsal scheduled for Wednesday, January 28 at 9:45 a.m. has been cancelled. (more...)

From February 12 to 21, 2015, the Geneva-based Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (OSR), one of Switzerland's leading orchestras, tours to California, New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC to perform its signature interpretations of early 20th-century French and Russian repertoire. Conductor Charles Dutoit, born in Lausanne in the Suisse romande, the French-speaking part of Switzerland, leads the OSR in Debussy's “Ibéria”, Ravel's La valse and Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2 in separate programs, and Stravinsky's The Song of the Nightingale. Russian pianist Nikolaď Lugansky joins the OSR in performances of Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. With these programs, Mr. Dutoit pays tribute to the flagship repertoire and spirit of his mentor Ernest Ansermet, the founder and longstanding music director of the OSR. (more...)

While it has only been open to the public since April of 2014, and fund-raising efforts to complete the conversion of its 72-seat Mainstage space continue, Catskill's Bridge Street Theatre has already proven itself to be a vital part of our region's cultural life. Housed in the old Curtron Factory Building at 44 West Bridge Street, just across Catskill Creek from Main Street, it has been presenting surprising new events almost every weekend - theater, magic acts, cabaret performances, classical, jazz, folk, bluegrass, and jug band concerts, art installations, a Haunted House, even a celebrity appearance by actress Patty Duke - and bringing new life (and foot traffic) to Catskill's West Bridge Street Corridor.
