Texas Author Releases New Literary Fiction Novel Set in Africa – 'The Sands Of Katambora'
by BWW News Desk - Aug 17, 2014

"The Sands of Katambora" is a sentimental story about overcoming obstacles and pursuing a greater good. It will touch your heart, excite your senses, and open your eyes not only to the beauty of the African landscape, but also to the ways wildlife and wild spaces are affected by human behavior. It has a powerful, prescient message of the devastation caused by modern ivory, rhino horn poaching and loss of habitat occurring in today's Africa. The story is set in Central Africa, along the Zambezi River, and is about the BaTonga people, who worship the River God, Nyaminyami. A dragon-like creature with a snake torso and a fish-shaped head, the BaTonga believe he controls their lives, and he is rumored to cast a spell on anyone who sets foot in the Zambezi valley. And so it was that Colin Somerset fell under her spell, and was bound to Nyaminyami for his entire life and throughout all of his endeavors. After first coming to the valley at age five, he dedicated himself to improving the quality of life for his beloved BaTonga people, and to protecting the land and wildlife held under her dominion. Set on transforming his family's business from hunting safaris to photographic safaris, Colin encounters tremendous struggles, opposition, and resistance from those around him, and experiences turmoil in his own personal relationships. A must-read for anyone interested in Africa, its people and landscape, "The Sands of Katambora" tells a compelling love story with a timely message about conserving the world's wildlife and wild spaces. "The Sands of Katambora" is available in print and ebook format. Crossword Book Awards Finalist Prashant Pinge to Debut Young Adult Fantasy Novel
by BWW News Desk - Aug 16, 2014

What if your shadow wasn't the docile grey shape you thought it to be? What if it held a vicious plague just waiting to be released? And what if the fate of the entire world rested in the hands of four children? Sceadu by Crossword Book Awards finalist Prashant Pinge intricately weaves together elements of psychology, mythology, and fantasy to offer young adult readers a thrilling adventure that takes place within the human shadow. A verse from a century old book leaves four children stranded in Sceadu, a land inside their shadows. 'I wanted to provide a rational explanation for the existence of this place,' says Prashant Pinge. 'And that's why I have used the concept of the shadow from a psychological perspective. However, it still ties in beautifully with how a shadow is defined in physics as well. It is what makes this adventure so believable.' The children find themselves on the run from the Hefigans, creatures of Sceadu. However, things take a turn for the worse when they realize they have unknowingly triggered an ancient prophecy which promises to unleash an apocalyptic plague back home. With the survival of their kind at stake, the children have no choice but to face the treacherous Hefigans who are just as determined to claim a world they believe to be their legacy. Sceadu will be released globally via Kindle on 10th November 2014 and will be subsequently made available on other e-readers. About Prashant Pinge Prashant Pinge is an acclaimed author of children's Fiction from Mumbai, India. He has been writing for over a decade, with four books and two short stories to his credit. Hess (Race, Red, Doubt). 60 years ago, Grandpa Nowak had a vision of the Virgin Mary in his Buffalo, New York barbershop and had an unusual statue of her made to commemorate the miracle. For decades, his family has faithfully tended to his quirky shrine-a source of hope and inspiration in an otherwise run-down part of town. That is until a deathbed confession knocks them for a loop in this hilarious hit comedy that proves when it comes to local legends, there's more than meets the eye. by BWW News Desk - Aug 15, 2014

Skylight Books (1818 N. Vermont in Los Feliz) will celebrate what would have been the 94th birthday of literary legend Charles Bukowski (born August 16, 1920). Skylight Books, recently named one of the best bookstores in America by USA Today, will throw a party on Saturday, August 16 at 5pm. The evening will feature writers Jerry Stahl, Richard Lange, and Dan Fante, reading excerpts of their favorite Bukowski works. A birthday cake and tasty beverages will also be served, thanks to sponsor, Ecco, who just published new editions of three of Bukowski's most popular novels. Charles Bukowski is one of America's best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose, and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of three. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for fifty years. He published his first story in 1944 when he was twenty-four and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp. Jerry Stahl is the author of the narcotic memoir Permanent Midnight and Perv-a Love Story, both Los Angeles Times bestsellers, as well as the acclaimed novels Pain Killers, Plainclothes Naked, and I, Fatty. He has written extensively for film and television. Richard Lange is the author of the story collection Dead Boys, which received an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the novels This Wicked World and Angel Baby. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and his Fiction has appeared in Best American Mystery Stories 2004 and 2011. He lives in Los Angeles. Dan Fante is the author of the memoir Fante, the novels 86'd, Chump Change, Mooch, and Spitting Off Tall Buildings, and several books of poetry, short stories, and plays. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and son. The event is on August 16 at 5pm. It's free and open to the public. Skylight Books is located at 1818 N. Author Colby Van Wagoner releases an action packed, western, book series called 'The Life of Zeke Slade.' The first book is titled, 'Ranger' and is book one in the series. Synopsis: In this coming of age story, Zeke Slade's mother and father are killed just before the Civil War. Shattered by the event, the military seizes his land in order to prepare for the coming war between the North and the South. The Adjutant General of the Texas Rangers gives Zeke a second chance and either the choice of facing prison time, or following what many others do to escape the mistakes of their past, by accepting a marshal position in a growing northern Alaskan mining town, where the past marshal was violently gunned down. In the town of Fever, Alaska, Marshal Zeke Slade is charged with enforcing the law during the gold rush. As tens of thousands of diverse prospectors arrive in the Alaskan territories, constant conflicts occur over land disputes, not only between miners, but with the native's sacred lands and with the diverse Alaskan wildlife. As the gold begins to flow from the miner's claims, outlaws and thieves run rampant through the town of Fever. Pillaging and robbing become a constant struggle, as Zeke Slade enforces the law with his style of Texas justice, along side his young and inexperienced deputies. Bookworks Presents Today's Shelf Awareness for Readers
by BWW News Desk - Aug 12, 2014

One hundred years ago, World War I began when the Austro-Hungarian Empire invaded Serbia in retaliation for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28. In a matter of weeks, Germany invaded France and neutral Luxembourg and Belgium, Austria-Hungary and Russia attacked each other, and Russia invaded Germany. Both sides believed the war would be over by the end of the year, but, of course, it lasted for another four years. By its end, some 16 million people had been killed and the maps of Europe and the Middle East were redrawn. Sadly, because of the short-sightedness of the victors, the settlement of the war sowed the seeds for World War II, an even deadlier, ghastlier war, and the redrawn borders didn't usually take ethnic and religious differences into account, setting the stage for many conflicts that continue to rage today.
