BWW Review: FAHRENHEIT 451 by Different Stages At The Vortex
by Frank Benge - Nov 21, 2016

FAHRENHEIT 451 is a play based on the 1953 dystopian novel of the same name by Ray Bradbury. The novel is regarded as one of his best works. It presents a future society where books are outlawed and 'firemen' burn any that are found. The title comes from the temperature at which paper becomes combustible. There was a 1966 film adaptation of the novel and Bradbury himself developed it into this play in the late 70s. Bradbury has stated that he wrote it to address his concerns about the McCarthy era and the threat of book burning. In later years, he stated it was a commentary on how mass media reduces interest in reading literature. The story is set in an unspecified city at an unspecified time in the future somewhere after the year 1960. (more...)

New eBook on Novelist Elena Ferrante is Released
by BWW News Desk - Nov 21, 2016

'Naples Little Women,' first critical study of the Italian novelist Elena Ferrante, published by Penington Press. Elena Ferrante's Fiction covers the psychic landscape of women who come of age in post-World War II Italy, who struggle to escape poverty and juggle the demands of career and family. Her narrator's voice is at once ferocious, intimate, and uncensored. Most remarkable for our media-obsessed age is that the author's identity is a mystery as compelling as one of her plots. This critical study of her seven novels by Professor Mullenneaux integrates Ferrante's own thoughts on her books from La frantumaglia (2003) with their critical reception since 1992. Chapters are dedicated to each novel and to the author's signature themes - mothers and daughters, female friendship, and Naples as a 'city in spite of itself' - to illuminate and extend Ferrante's unique contribution to world literature. This volume is an essential resource for anyone who wants to deepen their knowledge of one of Italy's best-loved contemporary writers. ISBN: 978-0-9704296-4-3. $24.99. Available from Amazon.com Contact: Penington Press, New York, NY, 212-749-2995 (more...)
