LINCOLN'S BODYGUARD Now Available in Trade PaperLINCOLN'S BODYGUARD Now Available in Trade Paper
by BWW News Desk - Apr 20, 2016

The Story: In Lincoln's Bodyguard, an alternative version of American history, President Lincoln is saved from assassination. Though he prophesied his own death-the only way he believed the South would truly surrender-Lincoln never accounted for the heroics of his bodyguard, Joseph Foster. A biracial mix of white and Miami Indian, Joseph makes an enemy of the South by killing John Wilkes Booth and preventing the death of the president. His wife is murdered and his daughter kidnapped, sending Joseph on a revenge-fueled rampage to recover his daughter. When his search fails, he disappears as the nation falls into a simmering insurgency instead of an end to the War. Years later, Joseph is still running from his past when he receives a letter from Lincoln pleading for help. The President has a secret mission. Pursued from the outset, Joseph turns to the only person who might help, the woman he abandoned years earlier. If he can win Molly over, he might just fulfill the President's urgent request, find his daughter, and maybe even hasten the end of the War. (more...)

THE SKINNY YEARS is ReleasedTHE SKINNY YEARS is Released
by BWW News Desk - Apr 19, 2016

Beck & Branch Publishers will release The Skinny Years, the fourth novel by award-winning author Raul Ramos y Sanchez in June 2016. The coming-of-age period piece is intended for adult readers. Set in 1960s Miami, The Skinny Years follows the travails of Victor 'Skinny' Delgado. A pudgy eight-year-old in 1959 when the Delgados arrive in the U.S. fleeing the Castro regime in Cuba, Skinny's once-wealthy family moves from a mansion in Havana to a roach-infested bungalow in Miami's low-rent Wynwood district. Over the next ten years the Delgados struggle to survive in this strange new land. Only one constant remains as Skinny grows from 8 to 18. He longs in vain for the girl of his dreams: his neighbor Janice Bockman who seems everything American-and everything he's not. Laced with humor, the novel's colorful characters provide fresh insights into the cold war, race relations, American traditions, and the youth counter culture of the sixties through the quirky perspective of a Cuban exile family. The Cuban-born Ramos is the author of the acclaimed Class H Trilogy: America Libre, House Divided and Pancho Land from Grand Central Publishing and Beck & Branch Publishers. The author has received multiple awards and recognition including Best Novel - International Latino Book Awards, Violet Crown Fiction Finalist - Writers League of Texas, Books-Into-Movies Award Winner - Latino Literacy Now, USA Today Summer Reads Author, and Book Festival Featured Author - Ohioana Library Association. 'Some readers will think The Skinny Years is quite a departure from my previous novels,' said Ramos. 'The scope of the story is smaller, to be sure. But I believe the essence of my work remains the same. I'd like provide readers with an engaging experience and finish the book feeling that beneath our disparities of culture, color and creed, we're alike in many more ways than we're different.' BWW Review: FIELD GUIDE is an Excitingly Experimental EveningBWW Review: FIELD GUIDE is an Excitingly Experimental Evening
by Frank Benge - Apr 18, 2016

FIELD GUIDE, a work-in-progress by Rude Mechs, is currently in a second draft performance at the Off Center. Rude Mechs creates new works collaboratively, and with FIELD GUIDE they are actively engaging their audience to get feed back on what works and what doesn't in order to help shape the piece. FIELD GUIDE, commissioned by the Yale Repertory Theatre, is a mash-up of Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, stand-up comedy, dance and some frankly uncomfortable direct audience addressing confessions. How much of the direct confessions are fact or Fiction we'll never really know. What we do know is this is an excitingly different evening of pure theatricality… an evening that you, as an audience member, are being asked to help define. Along the way during your 90 minute journey the Mechs cover topics from the longest Russian novel written such as intellectualism, spiritualism, sensuality and hedonism. While it is ostensibly an adaptation of The Brothers Karamazov, it really just uses the characters in the briefest Cliff Notes sense. This approach allows the performers to riff on the underlying themes present. There is even an unaccredited moment by Tom Lehrer when Robert S. Fisher performs 'They're Rioting in Africa'. What you are treated to is highly experimental in nature and at moments what ensues is truly magical. (more...)

Ward, a former librarian and current Austin resident, is a critically acclaimed author of five novels, including the bestseller How to Be Lost. She spent 2014 visiting shelters in Texas and California, meeting immigrant children and hearing their stories, which inspired The Same Sky. Through the retailer's Book Fair program, a percentage of the sales proceeds will go the Friends. If readers can't attend, they can also use book fair code 11831484 at bn.com April 29 through May 8 to support the group. The event is free to all, even those not in the Mansfield community; however the Friends are requesting people RSVP at mansfieldlibraryfriends.org by April 22 in order to have the appropriate amount of food on hand. The Friends are also asking those attending to bring used books to donate to their bookstore, which is one of their key fundraising sources. The Same Sky highlights a ripped-from-the-headlines story of two families on each side of the U.S.-Mexico border. The book alternates between the journeys of Carla, an eleven-year-old girl from Honduras who decides to make the dangerous trip north to find her mother in Texas, and Alice, a wife in Austin with a thriving business and loving marriage who feels something is missing, lying just beyond reach. Those with questions should contact the Friends at mansfieldlibraryfriends@gmail.com. Class Act Books Released Third Entry in New Family SagaClass Act Books Released Third Entry in New Family Saga
by BWW News Desk - Apr 18, 2016

'You're a menace, Padraig, an' I see no hope o' you changin'. Is there?' Quinton McCoy paused, giving his son a gimlet stare out of eyes as green as the serpentine in Connemara marble. 'Is there?' Padraig pretended to think, then shook his head. 'No, Da, I don't believe there is. I'm enjoyin' it too much.' 'Ah!' Quinton threw up his hands, then recovered. He stalked back around his desk but didn't sit. 'I'm afraid you leave me no choice.' Briefly his anger fell away. His gaze wavered, then he appeared to force himself to speak. 'Padraig, lad...I'm turnin' you out.' 'You...you're disownin' me?' Padraig's voice trembled. 'Ah, I'd ne'er do that.' Quinton said. 'What I'm sayin' is...I want you t' leave this house, indeed this country, an' ne'er come back.' Thus begins the story of Padraig Aloysius McCoy, third son and bad seed of Tipperary's branch of the McCoy clan. Unlike Books 1 and 2, set in Regency England and Ireland, The Man from Tipperary ranges from the gracious homes of landed gentry in Tipperary to an isolated cattle ranch in the American West in the years prior to and including the War Between the States. Settling in Nebraska, the misplaced young Irishman learns the hardship and heartache of being a cowboy in the mid-19th century, as well as the adventure of living in a time of social transition. He sees the Nebraska Territory gain statehood and discovers Love when it steps off a Wells Fargo stage. Full of history, humor, and romance, Padraig's story embodies the traits of many who went West and fought for their destinies instead of waiting for Life to hand it to them. The Man from Tipperary is author Toni V. Sweeney's fifty-third novel published by Class Act Books. Since the publication of her first novel in 1989, Ms. Sweeney divides her time between writing SF/Fantasy under her own name and romances under her pseudonym Icy Snow Blackstone. She has reviewed books for Two Lips Reviews and recently join the review staff of the New York Journal of Books and also the Paranormal Romance Guild. She is an amazon reviewer with over 570 reviews listed on the American amazon website, a professional reader for Netgalley, and is in the 1% of reviewers for Goodreads. Her Western novel NEBRASKA: Walk the Shadow Trail was award 1st Place in Historical Romance for 2015 by the Paranormal Romance Guild's Reviewers Choice, and also was voted #2 in General Genre by the Preditors & Editors Readers Poll for 2015. She has two new scifi/space opera series upcoming for 2016-2017. In 2013, Class Act Books came under new ownership. Based in Port Townsend, Washing, their goal is to supply quality Fiction in all genres for the discerning reader. Their novels are available in paperback and electronic form on amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, and on the publisher's website. (more...)

Best-Selling Author Dan Jolley Launches GRAY WIDOW'S WALK, 5/13Best-Selling Author Dan Jolley Launches GRAY WIDOW'S WALK, 5/13
by BWW News Desk - Apr 18, 2016

Best-selling author Dan Jolley will debut his first adult novel, 'Gray Widow's Walk,' on May 13, 2016 from Seventh Star Press. Set in Atlanta, 'Gray Widow's Walk' is the first book of the Gray Widow Trilogy. The cross-genre trilogy, with a mix of science Fiction, thriller elements, and dark fantasy, features captivating female protagonist, Janey Sinclair, the masked vigilante dubbed the Gray Widow by the press. As Janey's vigilantism gains worldwide attention, and her showdown with a bloodthirsty shapeshifter draws ever closer, the reason for her augmented abilities - hers and others like her - begins to reveal itself. Because, high above the Earth, other eyes are watching. And they have far-reaching plans... 'Gray Widow's Walk represents an enormous milestone for me,' Dan said. 'It's the first time I've been able to write with zero restrictions. No age considerations, no content parameters or word count limits, just me and whatever story I wanted to tell. Consequently, not only have I been able to create the beginnings of my own Fictional universe, full of as much sci-fi and action and suspense as I could manage, but it's also let me address a number of issues that I'm passionate about, not least of which are character diversity and gun control.' Dan Jolley started writing professionally at age nineteen while attending the University of Georgia. Beginning in comic books, he has since branched out into original novels, licensed-property novels, children's books, and video games. His 25-year career includes the young adult sci-fi/espionage trilogy Alex Unlimited; the award-winning comic book mini-series 'Obergeist'; the Eisner Award-nominated comic book mini-series 'JSA: The Liberty Files'; and the Transformers video games 'War for Cybertron' and 'Fall of Cybertron'. Dan served as co-writer of the world-wide-bestselling zombie/parkour game Dying Light, and lead writer of the Oculus Rift game Chronos. He lives in the northwest Georgia foothills with his wife Tracy and a handful of largely inert cats. Dan is available for interviews and appearances. by Shari Barrett - Apr 16, 2016

I have long been a fan of plays that present an insider's look at what goes on behind-the-scenes at a theatrical production. A fine example of such a backstage farce is Sarah Ruhl's STAGE KISS, skillfully directed by Bart DeLorenzo who knows exactly how to make the most outrageous stage antics and romances seem not only probable but incredibly hysterical thanks to Sarah Ruhl's fast-paced script that leads us on-stage, back-stage and out the stage door as reality collides with Fiction in this raucous and revealing relationship comedy.
