by TV News Desk - Oct 27, 2014

October 30th marks the 76th anniversary of the scariest and most remembered radio drama of all time, 'War of the Worlds.' Orson Welles and his cast were so convincing that thousands of citizens panicked, flooding police switchboards with calls, boarding themselves in their homes, and - in an extreme case - taking rifle shots at a New Jersey water tower, believing it to be an invading alien craft. Prometheus Rebound sci-fi author R.L. Akers says that tales of alien attacks are still fun and relatable. (more...)

CABARET LIFE NYC: Reaction to the Recent Rita Wilson and Molly Ringwald Cafe Carlyle Shows Reveal Much About How We View Singing CelebritiesCABARET LIFE NYC: Reaction to the Recent Rita Wilson and Molly Ringwald Cafe Carlyle Shows Reveal Much About How We View Singing Celebrities
by Stephen Hanks - Oct 27, 2014

Rita Wilson and Molly Ringwald deserve a lot of credit for being gutsy enough to go out of their comfort zones as performers and venture into the intimate, sometimes scary art from known as cabaret, where you're always live and can't rely on extra takes. It's also obvious that they've worked very hard at becoming the best vocalists they can possibly be. They have just as much right to live out their cabaret performing fantasies as, oh, about 75 percent of the 'singers' booking shows in cabaret room all over the New York. If Wilson and Ringwald weren't bold-faced names would their singing really be considered good enough to merit them gigs (and extended ones at that) at the Cafe Carlyle? And if they weren't celebrities, would they be receiving such breathlessly positive reviews from critics, some of who should know better? (more...)

Visionary Women's Fiction Book Launch at York University in October 2014Visionary Women's Fiction Book Launch at York University in October 2014
by BWW News Desk - Oct 25, 2014

Zainab Amadahy (author of "Resistance") and JF Garrard (author of "The Undead Sorceress") will be holding a joint Visionary Women's Fiction Book Launch at York University in October 2014. The purpose of this launch is to introduce Visionary Fiction books featuring strong female characters written by women. The genres of science Fiction and fantasy tend to be male dominated. By introducing female Fiction, the two authors hope to generate an interest in new, multicultural voices which realistically portray women in society from their point of view. "Many characteristics of strong female super heroes today were dreamed up by males and sometimes they are quite unrealistic," author JF Garrard states. "For example, many male super heroes are physically strong and fully clothed, but it's not the case with female super heroes. In my book (The Undead Sorceress) I portray a main female character learning to fight physically, but there was no need to dress her in scantily clad outfits. I also emphasize that strength is not only physical, but also comes from the inner core as the character deals with complicated conflicts. It was also important to have multiple ethnic groups in the book as our world is quite global and our stories should reflect this." Zainab Amadahy states, "Women are really transforming speculative Fiction and I'm proud to be a part of that movement. My book 'Resistance' showcases female power how women form the backbone of communities." The event will be hosted at York University and details are below. The authors will be doing a book reading and an informal Q & A will be conducted afterwards. Event information: October 30th, 2014 from 6:30pm to 9:00pm York University Student Center, Room 313, 4700 Keele St, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sponsors include Muskrat Magazine, Accents Bookstore, The Chinese Canadian National Council, York University's Centre for Women & Trans People and OPIRG at York University.
