The renowned scholar Michael Henry Heim, professor of Slavic languages and literature at the University of California, has written a brilliant new translation of this play that established Chekhov. One of the first productions of the Moscow Art Theatre, the plot deals with a young Treplev, his unfulfilled literary ambitions and his love for Nina. Convinced that he has lost her and furious at her attention to the literary lion, Trigorin, the despairing young man kills a seagull and lays it at Nina's feet as a symbol of his ruined hopes. Nina leaves with Trigorin, only to return later after Trigorin has lost interest in her. In a moving half-coherent speech, she compares herself to the seagull destroyed by a man's momentary whim. In this translation, Professor Heim gives us a fluent, utterly Chekhovian text without making it so contemporary that the play loses its sense of period. This is The Seagull that soars.
It is announced today that Damien Molony, best known for his roles in BBC's Being Human and Ripper Street, will play the role of 'Foster' in Harold Pinter's No Man's Land, completing casting for the play. Molony joins the previously announced Ian McKellen as 'Spooner', Patrick Stewart as 'Hirst' and Owen Teale as 'Briggs' in Sean Mathias' production, which will tour venues across the UK from 3 August prior to a limited engagement at London's Wyndham's Theatre from 8 September.

The Public Theater announced additional casting today for the 2015 Free Shakespeare in the Park season, beginning Wednesday, May 27 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. This summer will feature Shakespeare's late romances with THE TEMPEST, directed by Tony Award nominee Michael Greif, and CYMBELINE, directed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan. Jesse Tyler Ferguson will return to the Park this summer as Trinculo in THE TEMPEST, along with Hamish Linklater and Lily Rabe teaming up again with Daniel Sullivan on CYMBELINE to play Posthumus Leonatus/Cloten and Imogen, respectively.

A Contemporary Theatre Board President Colin Chapman announces that Artistic Director Kurt Beattie will retire at the end of ACT's 2015 50th Anniversary Season and will be succeeded by John Langs, a nationally recognized theatre artist who has served as ACT's Associate Artistic Director since 2013. From April 9 to 13 at HERE Arts Center, actor Adam Boncz will perform 'Fatelessness,' the first stage adaptation of the novel of the same name by Imre Kertesz, recipient of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Literature. The book is the story of a Hungarian teenage boy who survives a passage through three WWII concentration camps. The play is a 75-minute rendition of the book, adapted verbatim by Andras Visky from the translation by Tim Wilkinson. Gia Forakis directs.
