by Pat Cerasaro - Sep 9, 2013

Today we are talking to a supremely talented triple-threat who has carved out an astonishingly impressive career thus far onstage with her string of stupendous performances ranging from her blazing debut in the late-90s revival of THE SOUND OF MUSIC and WONDERFUL TOWN through to SWING!, INTO THE WOODS, NINE, THE WEDDING SINGER and her Tony Award-winning work in the recent revival of GYPSY - the alluring and simply phenomenal Laura Benanti. Touching upon many of her past stage and screen roles and expressing candid insights into many of her most celebrated characters to date, Benanti opens up about the productions and properties which have made her one of the most exciting and in-demand Broadway crossover performers of the 21st century. In addition to all about her many Broadway bows - including her most recent runs in IN THE NEXT ROOM (OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY) and WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN - Benanti also shares thoughts on her multiple TV and film projects, new and old, shedding light on THE PLAYBOY CLUB, GO ON, STARVED, THE BIG C, her current arc on USA's ROYAL PAINS, prior and upcoming film roles and even more. Most importantly, Benanti provides us with all the details on her new live solo album, IN CONSTANT SEARCH OF THE RIGHT KIND OF ATTENTION: LIVE AT 54 BELOW, as well as gives a preview of her series of upcoming concerts at 54 Below in promotion of the sterling new release. Plus, Benanti looks ahead to taking on Shakespeare via the new Public Theater production of THE TEMPEST as well as tackling a particularly operatic part in 2014 (byway of the just-announced THE MOST HAPPY FELLA). All of that, Benanti's recollections of performing a hilarious specialty song at this year's spectacular Tony Awards, as well as roles she would love to play in the future and much, much more! Matthew Day Jackson Opens 'Something Ancient, Something New, Something Stolen, Something Blue' Exhibit TodayMatthew Day Jackson Opens 'Something Ancient, Something New, Something Stolen, Something Blue' Exhibit Today
by BWW News Desk - Sep 6, 2013

Artist Matthew Day Jackson is a modern day American frontiersman. His interdisciplinary practice is in an all-consuming campaign to chart the outermost limits of human physical experience and to locate the place just beyond those limits where the sublime might reside. Working with a set of signature themes that range from space exploration and war machinery to advanced anatomy, he uses both traditional craft techniques and cutting edge computer mapping to make art that exposes the layered and often dark relationships between technology's abstractions and the palpable effects of time. For Jackson, the measurable and the inexplicable, power and sacrifice, mortality and the infinite are all part of a realm he has dubbed 'the Horriful', where everything we do has the potential to create both horror and beauty. 'The unobtainable distance, no matter how small, is an infinity,' Jackson has said. 'Artists go to that space. It is a space where others cannot or do not want to go, a space which is real and often dangerous, and they report back from there'. (more...)

BWW Interviews: Denise O'Neal Talks FLY IN THE WINDSHIELDBWW Interviews: Denise O'Neal Talks FLY IN THE WINDSHIELD
by David Clarke - Jul 31, 2013

In my opinion, one of the most incredible aspects of theatre is the World Premiere of a new piece. While these works seldom become the next big hit on Broadway, it is always fascinating to experience a product on the ground floor and be a part of it from the beginning. Luckily, for me, the Houston theatre community revels in giving me the opportunity to enjoy that experience with moderate regularity. The next brand new work to hit Houston stages is S. Denise O'Neal's THE FLY IN THE WINDSHIELD. The play is based on her interviews with men recovering from addiction in a F.I.R.M Recovery's 90-day faith-based rehab program. She took time out of her busy tech week schedule to give me insight into the work, its inception, and its development. (more...)

Student-athletes face challenges on and off the athletic field. Football players at the University of Notre Dame are under intense public scrutiny of their actions both on and off the football field, whether it is a winning or losing season. Those who attended Notre Dame after 1964 had a secret weapon - Mike DeCicco, newly hired chief academic advisor of student-athletes. He and other university leaders created a system that became a model for other universities, thanks to its exceptional student graduation rate: currently 97 percent, the highest in the nation. This new book details the successes - and missteps - of 25 football players who benefited from that program and made their mark on the world as unforgettable Domers. The author also shares what she calls the 'Notre Dame Value Stream of Life,' lessons outside of the classroom from these student-athletes at the private Midwestern university. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Horse Head Theatre Company's THE ALIENS is Quiet, Unusual, and CaptivatingBWW Reviews: Horse Head Theatre Company's THE ALIENS is Quiet, Unusual, and Captivating
by David Clarke - Aug 24, 2013

My research indicates that the average temperature highs in July in Vermont are in the low 80s, making Annie Baker's lines about discomforting heat in THE ALIENS almost farcical during Horse Head Theatre Company's presentation of the peculiar play. Always presenting works in non-traditional spaces that perfectly serve the scripts being produced, Horse Head Theatre Company is producing THE ALIENS in Boheme Cafe & Wine Bar back lot. Throughout the evening, unplanned but organic atmospheric noises only heighten the experience. The gravel crunches underfoot of patrons in the parking lot as they approach the metal folding chairs arranged in rows. The hum of many conversations sneaks in from the nearby outdoor seating area of Boheme, and so do noises associated with its food truck. The stage is an elevated platform made to look like the back door of the Vermont coffee shop where the play takes place, the parking lot serving as a realistic environment that this stage exists in. Horse Head's creative team has a knack for finding unusual locations and crafting events worth every penny of admission. (more...)

Doug Catiller of True Image Studio volunteered as the photographer for Get On The Bus, a program that allows children and their caregivers to visit their mother or father at a well-known prison in California on Father's Day. The bus picks up families from places like San Diego and San Bernardino, northward through LA and Orange Counties all waiting to see their loved ones in prison. Some of these families were seeing their fathers or grandfathers for the first time, while others were on a repeat visit. Inmates have to be on extra good behavior to qualify for this program. Doug learned from speaking to other volunteers, that many of These Men don't want to lose the privilege, so they have excellent behavior and cooperation. (more...)
