BWW Reviews: A Chick and A Dude Productions Revives Dark Drama HITBWW Reviews: A Chick and A Dude Productions Revives Dark Drama HIT
by Jeff Davis - May 6, 2013

In the second act of Hit, currently playing at Hyde Park Theatre and produced by A Chick and A Dude Productions, the tough, dangerous Asher states that the identity of the hit man has changed over the years. No longer are hit men Italian goons who kowtow to an old guy by kissing his ring or conniving thugs making offers no one can refuse. That idea of the true identity of a hit man is the clear focus of Hit, the gritty, daring drama written by and starring Shanon Weaver, Co-Artistic Director of A Chick and A Dude. Hit effortlessly goes underneath the tough guy exterior and reminds us that even killers-for-hire have a heart and a moral compass. They too can feel love and compassion, and they too have families. They're just like us, and the notion that these sinister characters are human after all makes Hit all the more stimulating. (more...)

by Lisa Norris - May 3, 2013

If you liked Short North Stage's recent production of "Passing Strange", you'll love CATCO's current show, "Five Guys Named Moe". Both musicals, each show features a young, lost, African-American man who gets a schooling from some older, wiser musicians. While the former was a good show in its own right, CATCO's "Five Guys Named Moe" production is an entire ensemble as smooth as the jazz tones the characters sing, in glorious harmony. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Women Wear the Pants in Baltimore Theatre Project's ACT A LADYBWW Reviews: Women Wear the Pants in Baltimore Theatre Project's ACT A LADY
by Nicole Reagan - May 29, 2013

Questions of art, gender and cross-dressing run rampant through 'Act a Lady,' a thought-provoking comedy now at the Baltimore Theatre Project. The show focuses on six members of a Prohibition-era Midwestern town aiming to put on an 18th century 'fancy dress' play to raise money for charity. But it's not the women who don the elegant gowns and parade around in homemade paste jewels. (more...)

BWW Reviews: City Theatre's 12 ANGRY MEN is Bristling with IntensityBWW Reviews: City Theatre's 12 ANGRY MEN is Bristling with Intensity
by Jeff Davis - May 26, 2013

In complete darkness, the Godlike voice of a judge echoes. To the unseen jury, the voice states, "Premeditated murder is the most serious charge tried in our criminal courts…One man is dead. Another man's life is at stake…In the event that you find the accused 'Guilty,' the bench will not entertain a recommendation for mercy. The death sentence is mandatory in this case. You're faced with a grave responsibility." Moments later, twelve men file into the jury room. As they immediately discuss everything from the weather to an upcoming ball game to their desire to "get it over with," it becomes clear that all of them failed to grasp the importance of the judge's stern and eloquent instructions. All, that is, except for the solitary juror who detaches from the group and stares pensively out the window. So begins 12 Angry Men, Reginald Rose's gritty and brutally honest examination of our judicial system, now playing in a stark and powerful new production at Austin's City Theatre. (more...)

Les Mis. A French title, and a show so popular it has its own nickname. When the show premiered in London in 1985, some people wondered how on earth Victor Hugo's masterpiece of a novel could be turned into a musical. Those people have long since been silenced. Les Miserables has become one of the world's most beloved musicals, and Maine State Music Theatre's current production proves exactly why. (more...)

Matthew Day Jackson Presents 'Something Ancient, Something New, Something Stolen, Something Blue' Exhibit, 9/6Matthew Day Jackson Presents 'Something Ancient, Something New, Something Stolen, Something Blue' Exhibit, 9/6
by BWW News Desk - Jul 29, 2013

Artist Matthew Day Jackson is a modern day American frontiersman. His interdisciplinary practice is in an all-consuming campaign to chart the outermost limits of human physical experience and to locate the place just beyond those limits where the sublime might reside. Working with a set of signature themes that range from space exploration and war machinery to advanced anatomy, he uses both traditional craft techniques and cutting edge computer mapping to make art that exposes the layered and often dark relationships between technology's abstractions and the palpable effects of time. For Jackson, the measurable and the inexplicable, power and sacrifice, mortality and the infinite are all part of a realm he has dubbed 'the Horriful', where everything we do has the potential to create both horror and beauty. 'The unobtainable distance, no matter how small, is an infinity,' Jackson has said. 'Artists go to that space. It is a space where others cannot or do not want to go, a space which is real and often dangerous, and they report back from there'. (more...)

Theatre-goers are going to be intrigued and delighted by Stratford Festival's production of WAITING FOR GODOT-directed by Jennifer Tarver, and featured on-stage at the Tom Patterson Theatre until September 26th. Excellent direction by Ms. Tarver, perfect set design by Teresa Przybylski and lighting design by Kimberly Purtell, and a superb cast bring to life Samuel Beckett's famous absurdist play where 'nothing' is said to happen. Something certainly happens inside the Tom Patterson Theatre; however. BWW Reviews: An Enchanting Evening With THE BOYS NEXT DOORBWW Reviews: An Enchanting Evening With THE BOYS NEXT DOOR
by John James DeWitt - Apr 30, 2013

Tom Griffin's 'THE BOYS NEXT DOOR' is a tricky script…its subject matter is a group home in the Boston area housing four mentally-challenged adult men; Arnold, Norman, Lucien and Barry. They have a caretaker, Jack, who lives offsite, and the play progresses through a series of vignettes illustrating the challenges of their everyday lives. As depressing as that may sound, the script has many comic moments, and it's a tightrope to balance the humor with the pathos. It was made into a mildly effective television movie in 1996 featuring Nathan Lane, Courtney B. Vance and Mare Winningham. I say 'mildly effective' because the play has an extra layer of difficulty in that the humor is generated by the plight of its characters…the audience laughs at the behavior and reactions of these damaged men, and without careful direction and acting skill, there could be guilt and self-loathing in the laughter rather than charm and warmth. The TV version fell victim to this, but STAGEright Theatre Company presents a beautiful rendering of the show under the direction of Jay D. Irwin. (more...)
