In his new play, The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures, Kushner writes movingly about politics and family in America today-plus unions, real estate and love. The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Interim Executive Director Joey Parnes) will continue its popular Shakespeare Salon Series this May. Following the success of last year's events, The Shakespeare Salon returns for two evenings this spring, with discussions featuring 2011 Shakespeare in the Park Directors Daniel Sullivan and David Esbjornson and moderated by Shakespeare Initiative Director Barry Edelstein. The Shakespeare Salons will be held on Wednesday, May 18 and Wednesday, May 25 at 6:30 p.m. at BONDST Restaurant (6 Bond Street). Tickets are $25 and include a complimentary glass of wine. Tickets are on sale now to Public Theater Members and will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, April 28. (more...)

The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Interim Executive Director Joey Parnes), Joe's Pub (Director Shanta Thake), and Joe's Pub, LLC (Managing Director, Partner Kevin Abbott and Designer Serge Becker) announced today that Joe's Pub, a vital part of New York City's cultural landscape, will take a three month hiatus, beginning July 2, to undertake an exciting interior redesign and renovation, spearheaded by original designer and Joe's Pub, LLC partner Serge Becker. Serving more than 100,000 audience members annually, Joe's Pub first opened in 1998 and presents more than 800 performances a year. It will officially reopen on October 1, 2011 with the same dedication to diverse programming, affordable ticket prices, full bar and dinner service, and an improved seating and stage design. The first preview of Tony Kushner's THE INTELLIGENT HOMOSEXUAL'S GUIDE TO CAPITALISM AND SOCIALISM WITH A KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES has been postponed a day to provide the cast and crew with an additional dress rehearsal. The production will now begin performances on Wednesday, March 23 at The Public Theater (425 Lafayette Street). The production is presented by The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Interim Executive Director Joey Parnes) and Signature Theatre Company (Founding Artistic Director James Houghton; Executive Director Erika Mallin) in association with the Guthrie Theater (Joe Dowling, Director). Newman - whom we hereby crown 'the doyenne of Nashville cabaret' - hints that more be on our artistic horizon, telling her audience Saturday night that she hopes to spread the gospel of cabaret to a larger audience on a more regular basis. Clearly, if anyone can do it, it is she: Ginger Newman (whom I've famously said I would 'drink her bathwater' on numerous occasions) has the charm, the verve, the vitality and no-holds-barred stage presence to make cabaret as ubiquitous and as much a part of this city's entertainment scene as running into Keith and Nicole at Starbucks. And as good as those five women in FIVE were (and they were fabulous, make no mistake about it), they'd do themselves a favor by taking advantage of the opportunity to study the song stylings - and song selection - of Ginger Newman. The Public Theater (Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director; Joey Parnes Interim Executive Director) announced the final Public Forum evening of the season, 'Tony Kushner and Oskar Eustis in Conversation,' on Sunday, March 8 at 8 p.m. In his new play, The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures, Kushner writes movingly about politics and family in America today-plus unions, real estate and love. On Sunday, May 8, Kushner and Eustis will discuss these topics and more, with an introduction by special guest host Cynthia Nixon.
