BWW Review: Keenlyside Returns to Met with a Low-Key DON GIOVANNI
by Richard Sasanow - Sep 30, 2016

When last seen at the Met , baritone Simon Keenlyside showed off his suave vocalism and superior acting skills in operas based on Shakespeare: He was elegant and intelligent in HAMLET by Ambroise Thomas and a charismatic Prospero in Thomas Ades's The Tempest. He could have picked up on any of those traits and translated them into a memorable Don Giovanni. Instead, he turned in a well-sung but low-key performance that didn't quite pull the opera together. Bear & Co. Presents MACBETH
by BWW News Desk - Sep 24, 2016

Three witches lure Macbeth to a clandestine crown. Shakespeare's tale of Scottish savageries from 400 years earlier blends life at the knife edge with surprising tenderness. Twelfth-Century Scotland is the world of Outlander, where decisions reek more of Game of Thrones than of the court of St. James.  Adapted from Bear & Co.'s July 2016 outdoor touring production, here is a love story with appalling consequences, presented in a fast paced re-telling. This is theatre magic. Let it come down. (more...)

This production of Shakespeare's popular romantic comedy is enhanced by a rock-and-roll score. Much Ado About Nothing is set in Messina, Sicily. Beatrice, niece of the local governor Leonato, and Benedick, a gentleman and friend of the powerful Prince of Aragon Don Pedro, are seeming adversaries, engaging in much verbal jousting and argument. The antagonistic remarks fool neither the men nor the women in Don Pedro's court; Beatrice and Benedick are obviously meant for each other, even if their love isn't instantly apparent. Their friends conspire to trick them into confessing their love for each other. (more...)
