TDF/Irene Sharaff Awards Honor Lee & Wolsky, 4/23

Legendary costume designer ALBERT WOLSKY and world renowned scenic designer MING CHO LEE are among the 2010 TDF/Irene Sharaff Awards recipients. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Friday, April 23 at 6:30pm at the Hudson Theatre (145 West 44th Street). Two-time Academy Award-winner Albert Wolsky will receive the 2010 TDF/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award for costume design, and Tony Award-winning scenic designer and educator Ming Cho Lee will receive the TDF/Irene Sharaff Robert L.B. Shakespeare & Company Announces 2010-2011 Season

Tony Simotes, Shakespeare & Company's Artistic Director, today announces the full lineup for the summer portion of S&Co.'s 33rd season, his first as Artistic Director. Joining the previously announced Mainstage titles is a special addition to the Founders' Theatre lineup, plus the exciting programming at the Elayne P. Bernstein Theater and key casting info for the summer season. In addition to previous casting announcements, award-winning long-time Company actor Jonathan Epstein returns to S&Co. after a six-year absence to join the cast of The Winter's Tale in the role of Leontes. Simotes also welcomes back Director Daniela Varon after a five-year absence, who will direct Sea Marks in the Bernstein this season. (more...)

Shakespeare Festival St. Louis announced the full cast of this season's production of Hamlet, running May 26-June 20, 2010. As previously announced, St. Louisan and Kevin Kline Award winner Jim Butz plays the title role. Joining Butz will be Justin Blanchard as Laertes, John Rensenhouse as Claudius, Anderson Matthews as Polonius, Deanne Lorette as Gertrude, Rob Krakovski as Ghost/Player King, and Kimiye Corwin as Ophelia. The Drama Desk and Obie Award-wining Mint Theater Company today announced the cast for their third play of the 2009-2010 season, a rare revival of Dr. Knock, Or The Triumph Of Medicine, Jules Romains' prescient 1923 satire. Keenlyside and Petersen to Star in Thomas's HAMLET at The Met, 3/16-4/9

Ambroise Thomas's Hamlet returns to the Met stage for its first performances since 1897, with the powerful pairing of Simon Keenlyside in the title role and Marlis Petersen as Ophélie. Keenlyside's acclaimed interpretation of Hamlet in Geneva, London and Barcelona finally arrives in the United States, with a performance in the Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser production that was hailed by the British press as 'magnificent . . . sheer vocal genius.' Petersen, who steps in for Natalie Dessay, brings her haunting portrayal of Ophélie to the Met; she earned praise for the role during a 2006 run of Hamlet in Düsseldorf. Louis Langrée conducts a cast that includes Jennifer Larmore as Gertrude, Toby Spence in his Met debut as Laërte, and James Morris in the role of Claudius. Jane Archibald, in her Met debut, sings the role of Ophélie on April 5 and 9. The creative team is rounded out by Christian Fenouillat with set designs, Agostino Cavalca with costume designs, and Christophe Forey with lighting designs, all in their Met debuts. A bunch of Clowns are putting up a show of Hamlet - they sometimes misinterpret the text, sometimes find new meanings in it, sometimes try and understand it, very often make a mess of it.They chose to use some phrases from the play and mixed it with Gibberish. They even edited the text, threw out some important scenes, and made a mess of the order of things as if the pages got mixed up. But through all this, they were simply looking for the essence of Hamlet, and trying to find a context in our own times. (more...)
