For Beth Henley's Crimes of the Heart to be successful it's vital that you cast three actresses who can convincingly and effectively play the roles of the three McGrath sisters of Hazelhurst, Mississippi. Director Pat Street probably heaved a huge sigh of relief when she saw Melodie Madden Adams, Evelyn Brush and Laura Thomas Sonn walk into auditions, knowing those three were more than equal to the task - but Sondra Morton would be well-advised to watch her back (you'll find out why later). Acclaimed British playwright, screenwriter, translator and director Christopher Hampton will be in Los Angeles next week to celebrate simultaneous openings. Hampton's translation of Chekhov's The Three Sisters, starring Jon Hamm, Jennifer Westfeldt, Tessa Thompson, Sarah Zimmerman and Reid Scott in a radio theater production for L.A. Theatre Works, and the West Coast premiere of his translation of Yasmina Reza's Tony Award-winning God of Carnage, starring Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden at the Ahmanson Theatre, both open on Wednesday, April 13. Audiences and critics on both coasts embraced Eurydice and In the Next Room (or the vibrator play), two shows steeped in longing from playwright Sarah Ruhl and director Les Waters. Now this talented team turns its attention to a fresh translation of a masterpiece: Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters. Ruhl enlivens this classic with the same elegant understanding of intimacy that infused those earlier collaborations, while Waters and a cast of 14 deliver another sumptuous production. This West Coast premiere begins previews on Berkeley Rep's intimate Thrust Stage on April 8, opens April 13, and runs through May 22. Three Sisters is a co-production between Berkeley Rep, where Waters serves as associate artistic director, and Yale Repertory Theatre. (more...)
