BWW Review: THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE at Rubicon Theatre CompanyBWW Review: THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE at Rubicon Theatre Company
by Cary Ginell - Mar 10, 2016

John Ford's 1962 film, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, is one of motion picture's all-time classic westerns. So when I heard that a play version was making its American premiere at the Rubicon Theatre Company in Ventura, I got more than just a little excited. Envisioning the tensions seen on the screen in epic portrayals by Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, and Lee Marvin promised to be riveting theater. Unfortunately, the play version was taken not from the screenplay by James Warner Bellah and Willis Goldbeck (it was unavailable) but an adaptation by British playwright Joshua Compton from Dorothy M. Johnson's original short story, and although the Rubicon has created a fabulous setting, marvelous performances from all of the actors, and an atmospheric, on-stage musical tableau by Trevor Wheetman, the result is simply not as compelling as the movie. Now on stage in an exquisite new regional production at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa through February 21, 2016, John Logan's riveting Tony Award-winning two-character play RED imagines a specific time period in the life of world-renowned abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko (played with superb gusto by Mark Harelik) and his struggles to remain an appreciated, serious artiste at the dawn of pop art, Andy Warhol, and the rise of pretty (and well-funded) 'over mantle' modern art. With the help of a new young assistant (the impressive Paul David Story), Rothko forges ahead with a high-paying commission to produce a series of murals for the Four Seasons Restaurant, which causes much inner turmoil for the artist. Marci Boudreaux Releases Fourth Book in Stonehill Romance SeriesMarci Boudreaux Releases Fourth Book in Stonehill Romance Series
by BWW News Desk - Feb 15, 2016

There is nothing Jessica wants more than to be like everyone else, but between her Down Syndrome and her colorful family, 'average' isn't part of her vocabulary. This year when she blows out eleven candles on her homemade vegan cake she makes the same wish she's made for as many birthdays as she can remember: she wants a mother. Jessica's father Phil has worked his entire life to create a more stable childhood for his daughter than he had. But a supportive mother, a recently returned father, rainbow pancakes, and princesses can't heal the dark void left in Phil's heart which he won't even admit is there. When Mallory's mother's life unexpectedly turns upside down, Mallory realizes her dreams come second to her heart, and she leaves her dream job in a big city to return home set on helping her fiercely independent mother recover. After forming a unique bond with Jessica-and a friendship with Jessica's hot father-Mallory finds that in coming back to Stonehill she might just have found a way to make all of her dreams come true. But as their families start pushing Phil and Mallory together, old insecurities and Phil's worst fears threaten to break up the happy trio and catch Jessica in the emotional crossfire. All four books in the Stonehill Romance series are available in both print and ebook formats. BWW Review: Planned Parenthood Founder Margaret Sanger Becomes a Patron Saint in WHAT EVERY GIRL SHOULD KNOW at triangle productions!BWW Review: Planned Parenthood Founder Margaret Sanger Becomes a Patron Saint in WHAT EVERY GIRL SHOULD KNOW at triangle productions!
by Krista Garver - Feb 11, 2016

As the lights come up (though only slightly) on Monica Byrne's WHAT EVERY GIRL SHOULD KNOW, we hear the moans of young women discovering their bodies. They record the results of their attempts in a log book. It's awkward and funny, and it sets the stage for this provocative dramedy about four girls coming of sexual age in a Catholic reform school in 1914. (more...)

by Caroline Sposto - Feb 11, 2016

The wildly popular musical, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder will be at The Memphis Orpheum February 9 - 14th. This daring, dark comedy hails from Roy Horniman's 1907 novel, Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal, told through the eyes of a man who bumps off the aristocrats standing in the way of his title. In 1949, the book was loosely adapted into the movie, 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' which starred Dennis Price, Joan Greenwood, Valerie Hobson, and Alec Guinness. In 2014, Robert Freedman and Steven Lutvak set the story to music. It has been nabbing awards and slaying audiences ever since. (more...)

BWW Review: 'Will No One Rid Me of This Troublesome Wife?' Theatre Memphis' THE LION IN WINTERBWW Review: 'Will No One Rid Me of This Troublesome Wife?' Theatre Memphis' THE LION IN WINTER
by Joseph Baker - Feb 1, 2016

Let's see now -- older married man with mistress, seething ex-wife, resentful and mistrustful offspring -- where was Dr. Phil? Alas, nowhere in sight in Chinon during the Christmas of 1183, as the powerful English king Henry II has released his imprisoned wife (and sparring partner) Eleanor of Aquitaine and allowed her admittance to a family gathering (along with his mistress Alais). Is it for personal or political reasons? Perhaps a bit of both? Henry, great in stature and accomplishments, has to decide which of his sons (none of whom will historically 'measure up') will become the future King of England. It's a Lear-like choice, and poor Henry has 'slim pickings.' With the oldest son dead, the three remaining are a snarling, disgruntled lot -- in one corner (Eleanor's), there's the pillage-prone Richard (later Richard the Lionhearted, who will spend most of his time abroad); in the other (Henry's), there's the pimply, unwashed, and feckless John (later, a famously unpopular king who will be forced to capitulate to baronial pressure and sign a little document known as the Magna Carta). Oh, yes, and then there's the ignored, Machiavellian Geoffrey, mistrusted by both parents and willing to play anyone on the human chessboard. (more...)

by Kristen Morale - Apr 7, 2016

Cape Cod Theatre Company's production of Little Women: The Broadway Musical is really something special. As I couldn't give you a visceral explanation of what it made me feel, this is a story who's truest depth and exquisiteness - its true emotion - is to be found once the journey is complete, and even then does a new beginning have the means of springing forth. Both the story and the way it was performed on stage, with music to bring out what is nothing less than extraordinary about four average girls and what their lives amount to, has such a spark to it as only CCTC can make happen - not only with this but with every show the group chooses to do.
