by Matthew Blank - Jun 13, 2017

The New York cabaret scene has found itself a new star, whether or not anyone was asking for it. Broadway album designer and social media demagog Robbie Rozelle, who has previously created solo shows for Melissa Errico and Kate Baldwin, decided it was finally Robbie's Turn and brought us SONGS FROM INSIDE MY LOCKER. When he regally ascended to the stage at Feinstein's/54 Below on June 9 as though he were the goddamn mayor's wife, it became immediately evident that this was a man set to lay it all out there for the enjoyment of the masses. BWW Review: THE TREATMENT, Almeida Theatre
by Marianka Swain - Apr 30, 2017

Martin Crimp's 1993 play feels sharply contemporary in this slick revival from Lyndsey Turner, with its layered deconstruction of the way that we treat both art and life as commodities - and how we mistreat one another - opening up industry satire into a far-reaching portrait of social malaise. BWW Review: Broads' Word Ensemble's THE LADY WAS A GENTLEMAN Comically Examines Love, Identity, Race, and Gender
by Shari Barrett - Apr 26, 2017

During the 2015 Hollywood Fringe Festival, I discovered the all-female theatre troupe Broads' Word Ensemble when my love of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shew and being a fan of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy led me to the group's first production, Fifty Shades of Shrew. After being exquisitely entertained by the show, I vowed to follow the group in their future endeavors, whether at Fringe or not. So when I heard about their current production of The Lady Was a Gentleman, a screwball comedy of seduction, mistaken identity, and all the fun you can get away with when you're famous, I was more than ready to see what this inspirational group of women were presenting as a pure theatrical confection. And delicious it was! (more...)

BWW Review: ANASTASIA Brings Romantic Golden Age Style Back To Broadway
by Michael Dale - Apr 25, 2017

No, that's not some forgotten Golden Age musical floating effervescently across the Broadhurst stage, but ANASTASIA sure has the old-fashioned romantic feel of one. The story of a young woman who may or may not be the presumed dead Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia has been told in many forms before - even as a short-lived 1965 Broadway musical called ANYA - but this new stage adaptation by Terrence McNally (book), Stephen Flaherty (music) and Lynn Ahrens (lyrics) is surely a welcome variation.
