BWW Reviews: Gamm Theatre's Up and Down Season Ends With Timely MARIE ANTOINETTE
by Robert Barossi - May 11, 2015

At times, it can be hard to imagine that there was ever a period in history when society was as celebrity-obsessed as we are right now. With the internet, social media, Twitter, 24-hour cable news and everything else, information about the Rich and Famous is everywhere, all the time. It seems impossible to avoid and seems that the public's appetite for it is insatiable. On the other hand, David Adjmi's play Marie Antoinette, now playing at the Gamm Theatre, casts the famous French queen in much the same kind of world. And while the uneven play doesn't offer much that's new or original, it does provide another lens through which we can view and examine our own society and it's problems. (more...)

New Contemporary Women's Fiction Novel from Simon and Fig is Released
by BWW News Desk - Mar 23, 2015

By and large, Amanda Keane makes pretty good decisions. Okay, she might not have the best taste in men, but she's got great friends, a good job, and an independent spirit. That is, until her 30th birthday ushers in a whirlwind romance with a sexy Irish musician who leaves her, not at the altar as she imagined, but accidentally pregnant. And when he disappears, she's downsized out of a job, her apartment is robbed, and lapsed health insurance coverage leaves her with a C-section to pay for, Amanda is launched headfirst into the life of a broke single mom. But her friend and uber successful ob-gyn, Joy, clues her in to an unlikely temp position with one of Chicago's celebrity elite that just may be the answer to all her woes. Or could it be just the beginning? It's with serious trepidation that Amanda embarks on her surprisingly lucrative new career: underground wet nurse to the offspring of Chi-town's Rich and Famous. Amanda must quickly understand how to live at the whims and mercy of the one percent as she deals with the irony of nursing - and loving - someone else's child, while still making ends meet for her own daughter. And then there's Cute Daycare Dad (aka Dan), who's obviously interested in her. But can she afford to tell him what she really does for a living? Is her new job (something she thought went out with the 19th century) a shameful thing? Just another way of selling her body? Or does it have something to teach her after all? A novel of motherhood, its many demands, and all the little triumphs along the way, Milked is a warm and witty debut about making tough choices and traveling the roundabout road to happiness. 'Milked: A Modern Mommy Tale with a Retro Twist' is available in print and ebook formats. ROWDY by Chris Madsen Wins Clemens Medal
by BWW News Desk - Aug 24, 2015

Author Chris Madsen has added the Clemens Medal to a long list of awards for his debut title, 'Rowdy,' a true story of a 1916 yacht and the people who graced its decks over several decades including members of New York society, politicians, and the Rich and Famous. The yacht was commissioned to Holland Sackett Duell in 1916 and Madsen was able to locate his daughter, Hanny Pierson, who at 93 years of age, flew from the East Coast to the West Coast to board the yacht following a six-year restoration by Madsen. From Hanny, her many descendants, and years of research at libraries, museums, historical societies, Supreme Court cases, newspaper archives, and yacht club records, Madsen was able to piece together an extraordinary story of the family and the yacht. 'The family's forefathers were amongst the first pilgrims that arrived at Plymouth,' says Madsen. 'And Holland's grandfather was instrumental in the formation in the Republican Party giving powerful speeches to Congress for the abolition of slavery, and in support of the Civil War. Holland was himself a highly decorated World War I hero and powerful attorney, New York Senator, businessman and highly respected sailor.' 'This isn't a book I would ordinarily read,' says Ron Fritsch, AiA director and reviewer for the Clemens award program. 'But once I started reading 'Rowdy', I could not put it down. It is a compelling story. The book is also beautifully produced and makes a wonderful coffee table book. The author has clearly invested a considerable sum on editing as the quality of the work is impeccable. 'Rowdy' is a deserving recipient of the Clemens Medal.' 'Rowdy' is a true life colorful 1920's historical biography full of adventure, love stories and scandals, and becomes the first book to be awarded the Clemens Medal. An e-version of 'Rowdy' is in production. The hard cover complete with accented gold leaf stamping, blind deboss and a woven burgundy book mark ribbon reflects the story within and is available at all major online retailers including Amazon.com. About the Clemens Award Program The Clemens Medal is awarded to an author for a book of outstanding literary quality and design. The three elements considered for this award include: - literary quality of work - the cover design and to a lesser extent, interior design - standard of editing Criteria The award is open to all independent (self-published) authors, and authors published by a small or academic press. 1. Prerequisite The nominated title must have won an award - gold, silver or bronze - from one of the award programs recognized for their Honoring Excellence award. 2. Literary Quality The following elements will be considered when assessing the literary quality of the nominated title. Note: not all of these elements will apply to every genre. Plot: is the story well-constructed, is author in control of plot and making wise decisions, do events happen within the limits of the theme and genre, is final resolution credible, and does it honor the story. Style: is the style appropriate to the theme, genre, subject matter, is the dialogue genuine and does it work effectively with the narrative, author's use of literary techniques and contentions, observance of fundamental rules such as Point Of View, accuracy of any factual material, use of language to create atmosphere, settings, characters, actions etc. Characterization: are characters believable, well-developed, do they interact in a convincing way, is their behavior consistent with their biography and consistent throughout the story, are they revealed to the reader in an effective way through action, inner dialogue, thoughts, reactions and responses to other characters. 3. Design 3.1 Cover Design Like story and writing style, design is quite subjective. Covers also need to respond to the elements that are relevant to a particular genre. We will be considering the following aspects of cover design: - a well written, compelling back cover copy (or description for eBook) - a custom, polished, professional design (no templates) - the genre or story is evident in the design 3.2 Interior Design With regard to interior design (print version only), we are not looking for elaborate design when simplicity works just as well. The nominated title will pass this criterion if: - the print is positioned sensibly on the page - the page numbering starts at chapter one - includes a copyright page with relevant content - includes a title page(s) 4. Editing The work must be edited to a very high professional standard. We accept that despite endless edits, rewrites and proofreading that some errors do slip through, and this happens with all books not just self-published books. However, such errors should be minor and limited. About the Clemens Medal The Clemens Medal is in honor of Samuel Clemens aka Mark Twain who started his own publishing company (Charles L. Webster & Company) in 1885 to self-publish his books. The Clemens Medal recognizes non mainstream authors ie self-published or authors published by a small or academic press who have published a book of outstanding literary quality and design. About The Association of Independent Authors The Association of Independent Authors (AiA) is the peak body representing, advancing, promoting and supporting independent (self-published) authors globally. Its membership spans six continents with directors based in the USA, UK, Asia, Australia and South Africa. The AiA published a comprehensive guide to self-publishing with 80+ articles from experts in their field. Self-Publishing. Publish Your Book and Avoid the Pitfalls with Advice from Leading Experts and Experienced Authors is available exclusively in the Kindle Store. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Theatre Memphis Brings THE PHILADELPHIA STORY South
by Joseph Baker - Apr 27, 2015

George Cukor's 1940 film version of Philip Barry's THE PHILADELPHIA STORY was Katharine Hepburn's return to glory after the actress had been labeled 'box office poison' after the failure of several films. 021The savvy Hepburn was able to bend MGM to her will when it wanted to film Barry's play, and the end result rewarded everyone involved: Hepburn, her old RKO co-star Cary Grant, and the up and coming James Stewart. Not only were Oscar nominations and wins in store, but at the center of it all was Hepburn in all her patrician, high cheek-boned elegance. She may have given greater performances as the tragic, dope-addicted 'Mary Tyrone' in the film version of Eugene O'Neill's LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT or as the caustic, sparring 'Eleanor of Aquitaine' in James Goldman's THE LION IN WINTER, but for those who want to see Hepburn at the height of her unusual beauty and comedic gifts, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY is a must. Having seen the film numerous times, I was wary of Theatre Memphis' staging of Barry's work. THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, once seen, leaves such an impression that it's rather like tackling a remake of THE WIZARD OF OZ or GONE WITH THE WIND or THE GODFATHER. Director Jason Spitzer has taken the dare, and he and his cast have mostly succeeded in the satiny, stylized production currently playing at Theatre Memphis. (more...)

BWW Reviews: BOBBIE HOROWITZ's New Series at the Metropolitan Room Celebrates 'Older' Over-Achievers and Accomplished Career-Changers
by Billie Roe - Apr 15, 2015

Songwriter, performer, producer, and now activist, Bobby Horowitz, has put yet another spin on the series/variety show, with her refreshing take on the subject of 'ageism' in America. Called It's Just a Number (starting with six dates running from April to October at The Metropolitan Room), Horowitz's show theme champions the notion that age truly is just a number. Featuring a different group of cabaret's best performers for each show, the series honors a person who after the age of 50 either began a new career, resumed a career, is attempting to attain knowledge in a new field, or established a new organization with the purpose of helping people. This past Saturday afternoon, Alice Fisher, who presently serves as Director of Community Outreach in the Office of NYS Senator, Liz Krueger, was the first honoree. (more...)
