Based on the book of the same title by Jaap Polak and Ina Soep Polak, STEAL A PENCIL FOR ME, a new opera with music by Gerald Cohen and libretto by Deborah Brevoort, will have its premiere in Scarsdale and New York City, NY in late April, 2013. STEAL A PENCIL FOR ME is a love story set in two concentration camps during World War II. It is based on the true story of Jaap and Ina Polak, whom the composer has known for the last 25 years, and who just celebrated their 100th and 90th birthdays. (more...)

Love and all its wondrous ways will find its way into your heart as the Wetumpka Depot Players present a one night only production of A R Gurney's Pulitzer nominated play, Love Letters. The February 12 performance is a season extra featuring Kristy Meanor, Depot Player's executive director and Greg Thornton, artistic director of the Cloverdale Playhouse. The special event program will benefit youth programs at the Depot Theatre and is a delightful addition to the company's 33rd season. (more...)

Emmy Award nominee Stefanie Powers will now play the role of legendary actress Tallulah Bankhead on the national tour of LOOPED. She replaces Valerie Harper, who was advised by doctors to take an immediate medical leave after having recently been hospitalized; she has flown back to Los Angeles with her husband Tony Cacciotti where she will receive continuing treatment and medical care. Gurney's Love Letters featuring real-life husband and wife duo Stephanie and Ben Adams as Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III who sit side by side and read the notes, letters and cards they have sent to each other for over 50 years. They share the dreams and desires, hopes and disappointments, victories and defeats that have passed between them throughout their separated lives. Tickets for Love Letters are $10. (more...)

Gurney's 1991 play, The Old Boy, replacing Hal Robinson. Performances of this Off-Broadway Limited Engagement begin February 12th and continue through March 24th only. Gurney was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play is a unique and imaginative theatre piece that is comprised of letters exchanged over a lifetime between two people who grew up together, went their separate ways, but continued to share confidences. Evocative, touching, frequently funny, as the actors read the letters aloud, they chronicle over nearly 50 years of hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats that have passed between them throughout their separated lives.
