Crowded Fire Theater (CFT) Crowded Fire's newly appointed Artistic Director Mina Morita unveiled the 2016 mainstage season lineup of three contemporary plays that continue to uphold the company's long tradition of producing boundary - pushing, thought-provoking theater. At a season-announcement party on Saturday, November 14th Morita addressed Crowded Fire donors, patrons, and artists saying "At Crowded Fire, we are unafraid of tackling big issues. We commit ourselves to true experimentation of form and content to question, disrupt, or complicate comfortable notions of cultural hierarchy." (more...)

Capping off a newly programmed three-day event of special screenings and panel discussions celebrating the importance and excellence in work being created for television, the annual awards ceremony will pay special tribute to some of the most respected, acclaimed personalities and entities working in television today. Receiving special awards this year are Director, Playwright and Emmy Award-Winning Actor Regina Taylor; Entertainment Reporter Janet Davies; Entertainment Reporter Bill Zwecker; and HBO. 2 BROKE GIRLS Star Beth Behrs Will Make NYC Stage Debut in MCC's 'A FUNNY THING...'

MCC THEATER has announced that Beth Behrs, the star of CBS's '2 Broke Girls,' will lead the cast of the world premiere of Halley Feiffer's comedy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center of New York City.  Behrs will be joined by Obie winner Lisa Emery, most recently seen on the hit Netflix drama 'Jessica Jones,' as well as stage veteran Jacqueline Sydney.  Additional casting will be announced at a later date.  Obie winner Trip Cullman directs the production which begins previews on May 19, 2016 ahead of a June 7, 2016 opening night.  Tickets are now on sale at www.mcctheater.org.  (more...)

On March 4, EgoPo presents the opening of Clare Boothe Luce's comic masterpiece, The Women with an all-female cast of 19. Directed by Artistic Director Lane Savadove, EgoPo Classic Theater continues their season of influential female playwrights with Luce, a woman who led an extraordinary life as a Broadway playwright, war journalist, congresswoman, ambassador, and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient. The Women previews March 3 and opens Friday, March 4. The show runs three weeks, closing on Sunday March 20. Tickets start at $25. BWW Review: Brilliant EXPECTING ISABEL Balances Humor and Heartbreak at Annie Russell

There is simply no overstating how fortunate Central Florida theatre fans are to have quality collegiate theatre programs in the area. While ticket sales are obviously still important for Theatre UCF and the Annie Russell Theatre at Rollins College, ultimately, their mission is not to produce the most commercially viable theatrical season in town; their goal is to give their talented students opportunities to challenge themselves, to learn about all aspects of their chosen profession, and to become the most well-rounded theatre artists that they can. And, because of this fact, Orlando is regularly blessed with brilliant productions like EXPECTING ISABEL, running at Rollins through Saturday, February 20th, that they might not otherwise be privileged to see. One of the more clearly visible technical aspects of a show for average theatre-goers is the set. What isn't quite as clear is just what goes into the creation of the world the characters inhabit in the play you are seeing. Set design, sometimes called scenic design, is the art of designing and creating the sets used in plays or movies. At times, designing can be as simple as arranging a few pieces of furniture on a stage. That type of set design is not what one things of, however, when one talks to set designer, Lisa Laratta, the subject of this edition of Tech Talk. (more...)
