FELA! Set For Broadway's O'Neill, Previews Begin 10/19, Opens 11/23

Fela!, the critically acclaimed musical that had audiences on their feet during its world premiere last summer at Off-Broadway's 37 Arts, will arrive on Broadway this fall where it begins performances at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre (230 West 49th Street) on Monday, October 19. The official opening is set for Monday, November 23. This new musical, based on the life of groundbreaking African composer, performer and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, is directed and choreographed by Tony® Award-winner Bill T. Jones (Spring Awakening), with a book by Jim Lewis and Bill T. Jones. Sahr Ngaujah will return in the title role for which he received universal acclaim, while the world renowned Antibalas and other members of the NYC Afrobeat community, under the direction of Aaron Johnson, will again perform Kuti?s rousing music live onstage. Winner of this year?s Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical, Fela! was conceived by Bill T. Jones, Jim Lewis and Steve Hendel. (more...)

Michael Frayn's Award-Winning Drama 'Copenhagen' At Palm Beach Dramaworks

Michael Frayn is an English playwright and novelist. He began as a reporter for The Guardian and The Observer after graduating college in 1957. His first novel, The Tin Men, was published in 1965 winning him his first of many accolades. His other award winning novels include Headlong, The Russian Interpreter and Spies. Considered to be Britain's finest translator of Anton Chekhov, he adapted four major plays along with several smaller plays for an evening called The Sneeze in London in 1988. Theatrically, Frayn is the playwright for such well received plays including Noises Off, Benefactors, Wild Honey and Democracy. (more...)

THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, the highly anticipated new Kander and Ebb musical now in previews at the Vineyard Theatre, may be preparing itself for a Broadway transfer as early as this season, pending the availability of a theater. Michael Riedel reports in the New York Post this morning that heavy-hitting producers Fran and Barry Weissler have invested $400,000 into THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, and writes that 'If the reviews are strong, they'll move it to a small Broadway house, very possibly before this year's Tony cutoff date, should a theater become available.' Martin Sheen will return to the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play that brought him a Tony Award nomination in 1964, and join with Frances Conroy and Brian Geraghty in 'The Subject Was Roses' by Frank D. Gilroy, it was announced today by Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. 'The Subject Was Roses' replaces the previously announced 'Speed-the-Plow' by David Mamet as the first production in the Taper's 2010 season at the Los Angeles Music Center, February 10 through March 21, 2010. West Coast Ensemble presents the fourth and final show of their 2009 season, Three Tall Women, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee and directed by Michael Matthews (Stupid Kids, The Bacchae). Three Tall Women will preview on Thursday, November 12 and Friday, November 13 at 8:00pm and will open on Saturday, November 14 at 8:00pm and continue through Sunday, December 20 at West Coast Ensemble - The El Centro Theatre, 800 N. Producer Daryl Roth has announced that casting has been completed for the return engagement of last season's Drama Desk nominated musical comedy for all ages, DEAR EDWINA. The show will return to the DR2 Kids Theatre (103 E. 15th St., NYC) for the holiday season and beyond, with a run extending from December 11 through February 15. (more...)
