La Jolla Playhouse announces the cast and creative team for Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, a world-premiere musical featuring a story by The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and Playhouse Director Emeritus Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys, Jesus Christ Superstar), music and lyrics by The Flaming Lips, and direction by Des McAnuff. La Jolla Playhouse previously announced its final production of the 2012/2013 season: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, a world-premiere musical written and directed by Playhouse Director Emeritus Des McAnuff (Jesus Christ Superstar, Jersey Boys), with music and lyrics by The Flaming Lips. According to the Globe and Mail, the musical will be lead by Paul Nolan, who previously played the title role in McAnuff's recent Broadway revival of Jesus Christ Superstar. The show will run in November/December 2012 (dates TBA) in the Mandell Weiss Theatre. (more...)

The Bonstelle Theatre will open an adaptation by Tyler J. Monroe of one of Hans Christian Andersen's most popular fairytales, The Snow Queen, just in time for the holiday season. It runs from November 30 to December 9, 2012. This classic children's fairytale is a holiday treat, and the Bonstelle Theatre's production will include a preshow craft activity with cast members for children starting 45 minutes prior to curtain time. Court Theatre today announced its 2012/13 season under the continuing leadership of Artistic Director Charles Newell, Executive Director Stephen J. Albert, Board Chair Virginia Gerst and Deputy Provost of the Arts Larry Norman. The company's 58th season will feature August Wilson's Jitney, directed by Resident Artist Ron OJ Parson; a reimagining of James Joyce's The Deaddirected by Artistic Director Charles Newell with Musical Direction by Doug Peck; David Hare's Skylight directed by William Brown in his Court Theatre debut; and University of Chicago alumnus David Auburn's Proof, also directed by Charles Newell. Newell will close the season by returning to the world of French Baroque with Moliere's The Misanthrope, followed by Tartuffe. (more...)

A co-production with Berkeley Repertory Theatre, An Iliad features Henry Woronicz as the "Poet," with Brian Ellingsen as the "Musician" and runs August 11 - September 9 in the Mandell Weiss Forum. The Festival's wide-ranging events unfold in nine extraordinary venues, many of them open-air, in and around the picturesque ancient Provencal city: castles, a cathedral, a basilica, a palace courtyard, a historical site dating back to the 11th century BC, and an 18th century theatre transformed from a Ā«jeu de paumeĀ» court where Louis XIV played in 1660. Theatricum Botanicum's 2012 Summer Repertory Season will present four plays in repertory on its mainstage: Measure for Measure and A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare; Heartbreak House by George Bernard Shaw; and The Women of Lockerbie by Deborah Brevoort.
