by Pat Cerasaro - Jun 23, 2013

Today we are talking to a spectacularly talented composer/lyricist noted for his incredibly impressive and accomplished oeuvre thus far, having collectively composed more than twenty full-length musicals, operas and specialty performance pieces - Michael John LaChiusa. Discussing his vast array of projects from BUZZSAW BERKELEY to FIRST LADY SUITE, HELLO AGAIN and THE PETRIFIED PRINCE Off-Broadway through to his double-header in the 1999-2000 millennial season with MARIE CHRISTINE and THE WILD PARTY both on Broadway to his Off-Broadway, regional and international successes since, ranging from LITTLE FISH to another two-show-season in 2006 with BERNARDA ALBA and SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE as well as THE HIGHEST YELLOW and the recent Americana-themed epic musical pseudo-trilogy of LOS otros, QUEEN OF THE MIST and GIANT. Additionally, LaChiusa touches upon some of his lesser-known work, such as his musical revue HOTEL C'EST L'AMOUR, various operatic pieces, additional material he provided for pieces such as THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS and his previous and upcoming solo musicals for continuing collaborator Audra McDonald, such as SEND (who are you? i love you) and MARLENE DIETRICH'S ABCs OF LOVE. Most importantly, LaChiusa takes us behind the scenes of the sparkling new deluxe cast album for GIANT, starring Brian D'Arcy James, and discusses the themes, ideas and adaptation of the Edna Ferber novel itself in a fascinating and revealing analysis of the vast, enveloping and vivid score he has composed for GIANT. Also, LaChiusa offers the 411 on this year's Tony Awards specialty song composed for host Neil Patrick Harris and some starry cohorts (Megan Hilty, Laura Benanti and Andrew Rannells), as well as previous Tony show one-offs penned for Hugh Jackman and others. Plus, LaChiusa clues us in on his upcoming projects - including FIRST DAUGHTER SUITE - and much, much more in this career-spanning conversations with one of modern musical theatre's most daring and prolific artists. MUST READ! Bill Gates Opening Address of 2013 Microsoft Research Faculty SummitMUST READ! Bill Gates Opening Address of 2013 Microsoft Research Faculty Summit
by BWW News Desk - Jul 29, 2013

BILL GATES: Well, good morning. It's great to be here. I haven't been here for over five years so it's great to see the way this event has grown. And I think it's fair to say that we're in a golden age of computer science. The original vision of Microsoft that we had a dream about what software could do if we had infinite computing and infinite storage; that almost is our reality today. And so it's amazing for me to see how that's being applied, whether it's user interface, with vision, speech, pen, with modeling in rich data areas with machine learning. And it really seems like that idea, the powerful assistant that can help us get things done, help us drive deep insights, that the progress we'll make in the next 5 years and 10 years will be really unbelievable. Even our friends in the hardware industry are giving us better screens, better sensors, things that let us exercise the magic of software. And for Microsoft, that means taking something like Office and going from documents to deep insights, taking something like search and going from links to answers to task solutions. So software, you know, has only achieved a very small portion of what we want it to do and even you could say what we need it to do. If you look at things like climate modeling, energy innovation, so much that this field has to contribute to solving broad science problems. I thought just as a kickoff, I'd give you four examples of things that I work on at the foundation before we go on to the Q&A, and really highlight how in each of those areas it's software and digital approaches that are letting us be very ambitious. Rebecca's Fitness Review: Go With the FlowchartRebecca's Fitness Review: Go With the Flowchart
by Rebecca Levy - Jul 27, 2013

True story: One night I came home from a great dinner with great friends. We enjoyed cheese and crackers for appetizers, a decadent home-made chicken entree with plenty of sides, fruit, and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. At the end of the evening, I was full of good food and good times. Upon returning home, before I even took off my jacket, I went directly to my freezer and opened up the pint of Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia I had bought for myself earlier that day. I grabbed a spoon and immediately dug in. I lost myself in the smoothness of the cream and the satisfying sweet crunchiness of the chocolate chunks. I could feel the silky texture slide around my tongue and down my throat. I continued eating faster and faster as if I were in a rush of some kind. Finally, my spoon hit the bottom of the container. I had consumed the entire pint. (more...)

Albert Lebowitz Releases THE LEGAL MIND AND THE PRESIDENCYAlbert Lebowitz Releases THE LEGAL MIND AND THE PRESIDENCY
by BWW News Desk - Jul 11, 2013

Everybody knows a lawyer joke or two, but what's not as well known is the effect of the legal mind on the U.S. presidency. That's a problem, author Albert Lebowitz points out in his new book, because 27 of the 44 presidents since the nation's founding have been lawyers. For instance, although hundreds of books and articles have been written about Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, little emphasis has been placed on both of them earning degrees from Ivy League law schools, being constitutional law professors and having wives who also graduated from Ivy League law schools and practiced law.
