PYGMALION, THE ELDER STATESMAN and More Set for Washington Stage Guild's 27th SeasonPYGMALION, THE ELDER STATESMAN and More Set for Washington Stage Guild's 27th Season
by BWW News Desk - Sep 4, 2012

The Washington Stage Guild celebrates its 27th Season with its distinctive repertory, an array of eloquent plays of idea and argument, passion and wit-smart theatre for a smart town. As always, The Washington Stage Guild's 2012-2013 season will include four productions of plays that delight and challenge audiences with wit, insight, and truth. There are always lessons to be learned in these great works, and the plays of the Stage Guild's 27th season revolve around the complex relationship between teacher and student, mentor and disciple, expert and novice, when the inevitable happens and the pupil takes flight. Three plays by a trio of the greatest writers the world has known-Dante, Shaw, T.S. Eliot-will be joined by the DC premiere of a recent Off-Broadway hit by the Englishwoman Karoline Leach. (more...)

CHICAGO is a musical that's burdened by the weight of its expectations. BWW Interviews: Chatting with DETROIT's Darren PettieBWW Interviews: Chatting with DETROIT's Darren Pettie
by Joseph F. Panarello - Oct 9, 2012

Anyone who follows the theater scene in New York realizes that hardly a year goes by when actor Darren Pettie isn't appearing on Broadway, Off Broadway or regional theater. He's also been seen on television in "Mad Men", "Pan Am", "Castle", "Gossip Girl", "Brothers and Sisters" and a host of other shows. Not only is he one of New York's busiest actors, he's one of its finest, too. Take, for example, his performance two seasons ago in THE MILK TRAIN DOESN'T STOP HERE ANYMORE. As the enigmatic Christopher Flanders, Pettie was required to utter the single syllable word "Boom" to emulate the crashing of the waves upon the rocks surrounding Italy's Divina Costiera. Other actors in the role have faltered here, but Pettie imbued the line with authority and conviction that were never apparent in previous incarnations of the work. "Thanks," responds the actor via telephone. "There were some nights that I was very self conscious about that line." (more...)

BWW Reviews: St. Louis Actors' Studio's Fascinating Production of GOODBWW Reviews: St. Louis Actors' Studio's Fascinating Production of GOOD
by Chris Gibson - Oct 18, 2012

Playwright C.P. Taylor's work, GOOD, is a piece of theater guaranteed to make the audience think. That's a Good Thing. Too often, things are so cut and dry that the viewer isn't really required to ponder what they've just seen, they simply digest it and move along. But, Good stays with you, and makes you wonder just what it would take to make a person conform their values and beliefs in an effort to get ahead, even if meant the attempted extermination of a whole race of people. The St. Louis Actors' Studio has put together a fascinating and engaging presentation that truly makes you ask this question. And, with current legislation in Germany being discussed that would outlaw circumcision, it's a timely work that makes you aware of the fact that those who don't learn from their own history may be doomed to repeat it. Washington Stage Guild Starts 27th Season with Shaw's Original PYGMALION, 10/25-11/18Washington Stage Guild Starts 27th Season with Shaw's Original PYGMALION, 10/25-11/18
by BWW News Desk - Oct 13, 2012

The Washington Stage Guild kicks off its 27th season with one of the most beloved plays of the past century, an indelible hit by the Stage Guild's 'playwright in residence' - George Bernard Shaw. PYGMALION was written in 1912, and the story of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle, her speech lessons at the hands of the temperamental Henry Higgins, and the sparks that fly between them, has rarely left the stage since its premiere. Directed by Stage Guild Artistic Director, Bill Largess, Shaw's comedy is sharp and insightful, asking questions as valid today as a century ago. Exactly what 'makes' a lady a lady? The way she behaves, or the way she is treated? (more...)

BWW Reviews: Hilarious Production of PIRATES! at The MunyBWW Reviews: Hilarious Production of PIRATES! at The Muny
by Chris Gibson - Aug 2, 2012

The latest extravaganza to grace the stage at The Muny in Forest Park is a hilarious re-working of Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of the Penzance (although some of the tunes are lifted from other works by the pair). PIRATES! (or Gilbert and Sullivan Plundr'd) is a spirited romp with a storyline more akin to Seven Brides for Seven Brothers than the original plot, and lyrics (revised book and lyrics by Nell Benjamin) and rearranged musical arrangements (courtesy of John McDaniel) that will amuse even the staunchest purists among us. This is just plain goofy, pirate-laden fare that owes as much to the recent Pirates of the Caribbean film series as to it does to Gilbert and Sullivan. And that's a Good Thing, at least it is in this case. (more...)
