New Children's Book by Patty Lord is Released
by BWW News Desk - Jan 19, 2016

A rubber chicken who's feeling desolate and grimy finds some shelter from a rainstorm in a tall oak tree next to a farmhouse. The sound of quiet sobs lures Him close to a bedroom window, and before he knows it, he's being pulled inside, rescued from a weak branch. Little does he know that the little girl he encounters will change his life - and he hers. Follow their delightful story in a new children's book released by Dog Ear Publishing. 'Sometimes You Need a Rubber Chicken' stars Chuck, a rubber chicken who doesn't believe he has a purpose and is embarrassed about how he looks, and Jan, a girl who also gets embarrassed, thanks to a medical condition that leads other kids to make fun of her. She's crying because surgery is scheduled for the next day to fix the problem. Chuck becomes an unexpected source of support throughout her hospital stay and realizes even rubber chickens can have a special purpose in life. Humorous illustrations by Al Margolis in pen and colored pencil pair naturally with the story, which works for reading aloud or for young readers. Parents will appreciate its note of encouragement and positivity. This is the first children's book for author Patty Lord, who first met Chuck the rubber chicken after she was appointed principal of a middle school. (His chance appearance boosted morale at the school.) Lord has a master's degree in education and is a certified school consultant and principal. She's worked with children for 35 years as a teacher and/or administrator at the elementary, middle and high school level. She works part time as a school administrator and has two children, Steven and Rachel. Lord and her husband, Kenny, live in Prospect. She enjoys writing, traveling and reading, as well as hanging out with her Italian greyhound. Illustrator Al Margolis' work has enhanced advertising and children's books. The Cleveland Art School graduate has been advertising agency art director and owns Margolis Creative, specializing in humorous illustration. He enjoys helping children, learn, enjoy and understand their experiences. For additional information, please visit www.pattylordauthor.com. BWW Review: Burbage Theatre Company's Excellent HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WANDA JUNE
by Andria Tieman - Jan 19, 2016

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WANDA JUNE is the only full length play by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., based on his novel of the same name.  Like many Vonnegut works, it captures beautifully the absurdity of life, death and senseless violence all while making you laugh so hard you worry you'll hurt yourself.  Burbage Theatre Company has taken this under-utilized gem and shined it up perfectly.  Though the play takes place in 1970, it's shocking to note how well it holds up, especially when acted and directed so well. BWW Review: EQUUS Chills as Constellation Theatre
by Emma Kouguell - Jan 19, 2016

As a society, we often view extreme acts of 'passion,' whether it be motivated by anger, lust, or sadness, as negative, resulting in pain, or as something to be 'fixed.' Instead, we strive for normalcy and balance, obliterating any despair and following our established routine of life. What we often don't realize is that 'normal' can lead to an emptiness in connection, desire, and motivation that those who feel exceptional passion do not suffer. Is it possible for the 'normal' to make room for the extreme in their own lives? (more...)

'Crossing the Rubicon A Personal Journey of Self-Acceptance of a Proud Gay Man' by D Nathan Cieszynski Launches
by BWW News Desk - Jan 19, 2016

Nathan's Light is pleased to announce the launch of 'Crossing the Rubicon' by D Nathan Cieszynski. This book was written to help individuals find their piece of contentment, find their path to self-acceptance and release the chains that bind them to half-lives and shadows as Nathan shares his personal struggles in the hope that he will inspire readers with his story. This is the coming of age story of a proud gay man: a raw look at his inner battles and outward struggles as he tried in vain to be what the world wanted Him to be before finally understanding that being true to Himself and accepting Himself was the only way to survive in a straight world. 'Crossing the Rubicon - A Personal Journey of Self-Acceptance of a Proud Gay Man' was extracted from many years of journals, detailing Nathan's memories of days not easily forgotten. Nathan chronicles his inner battles to accept who he was through major turning points in his life, as he came to accept the struggles and relationships which led Him to embrace those things about Himself that he previously wanted to destroy. 'I never thought I would read the memories of a gay man and find inspiration and insight into my own life with a new understanding of who I was. As a straight man I saw so much of my own struggles and understood that I created most of them myself,' said Bryan C. 'I'm sitting in a plane on the runway waiting to take off, flight was delayed, so I decided to do some reading. Big mistake, about 3 or 4 pages into chapter 5 and I am laughing out loud. Hate to put the book away. People are looking at me like I am crazy!!' said Sonia K. 'Crossing the Rubicon' features transformative events, moments and action steps that may provide inspiration to those in the second half of life, whether young or old, so that they can learn how to: Find their path to self-acceptance in order to find happiness, contentment and most of all, love, in your life Take blame and criticism for who they are 'Crossing the Rubicon' will surely convince you that it does get better and that living life is so much better than living in fear. About D. Nathan Cieszynski D. Nathan Cieszynski was born in Denver, Colorado in 1971. Born to a military family, he lived in many parts of the country. Nathan spent his most formative, coming-of-age years living in Guatemala, Central America, returning to the United States when he was twenty-five years old. Nathan was and is an avid reader, having used books as an escape from a world he did not understand, as a way to hide his identity from those around Him. He learned at an early age the power of the written word, and began journaling his life. Nathan works as the Housing Counseling Supervisor for a non-profit fair housing agency in Ontario, California, providing education and assistance to new and existing homeowners, and those struggling to make their monthly mortgage payments. Nathan also teaches financial literacy workshops designed for young adults, senior citizens, and all those in between, and provides money management and financial education to those transitioning from homelessness to housing.
