BWW Review: Slight GOLDEN LEAF RAG TIME BLUES at Ensemble
by Roy Berko - Feb 15, 2016

Director Ian Wolfgang Hinz's program notes state, 'GOLDEN LEAF RAG TIME BLUES is an exploration of prejudice and humanism.' He further states, 'GLTRF asks us to confront our human capacity for seeing the 'content of character' present in all of us.' (more...)

BWW Review: Washington National Opera Takes On A Bit of Broadway With LOST IN THE STARS
by Jennifer Perry - Feb 15, 2016

Although the production doesn't quite soar, LOST IN THE STARS is a welcome addition to the WNO season simply because it's not performed very frequently - at least in comparison to other more familiar works that transcend the opera-musical divide. (more...)

BWW Review: FIXING TIMON OF ATHENS Delivers Modern Parable On Greed
by Frank Benge - Feb 15, 2016

Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare is one of his plays that scholars either group with his tragedies or as one of the so-called "problem plays". FIXING TIMON OF ATHENS is part of an on-going attempt by the Rude Mechs to make more accessible and usable pieces of theatre out of the canon of Shakespeare's problem plays. With FIXING TIMON OF ATHENS Kirk Lynn has essentially cleaned-up and streamlined the play into a ten character piece that functions as a modern and timely parable about greed. (more...)

BWW Review: THE TEMPEST Delivers a Wave of Top-Notch Talent at Orlando Shakespeare Theater
by April Montgomery - Feb 15, 2016

A tale of mysticism, betrayal, love and the ultimate choice. THE TEMPEST is arguably one of Shakespeare's most cohesive works, with its central plot all taking place on the same day in one location. The storyline is easier to follow than some of the Bard's earlier plays, which is brought to light by the acting and direction in the Orlando Shakespeare production that opened in Central Florida on Friday night. BWW Review: MOTHERS AND SONS - and Son and Lover - Clash at Theatre Memphis' Next Stage
by Joseph Baker - Feb 15, 2016

In Terrence McNally's MOTHERS AND SONS, now playing at Theatre Memphis' Next Stage, there's something out of place in Jack Yates' smart New York apartment set -- and it has nothing to do with furniture. Rather, it's the presence of Karen Mason Riss's 'Katharine,' who, unannounced, has flown from her home in Dallas to visit 'Cal,' the one-time lover of her long-deceased son 'Andre.' Her anomalous presence is not unlike situating Archie Bunker's armchair in the foyer of the Biltmore. She has arrived with baggage: Not what she uses for travel -- but what she has carried within herself for the last twenty years; and of all times, it's the Christmas season -- and, clutching her fur coat as if it were some time of impenetrable armor, she comes across like some unwelcome Ghost of Christmas Past. BWW Review: INGA BINGA Sneaking into the Mainstream
by Amy Bradley - Feb 15, 2016

Traveling back to 1942, with the world at war and every man and woman yearning to get into the fray, INGA BINGA highlights the J Edgar Hoover era of espionage. Frank Benge reliably directs this devious comedy in its regional debut, showcasing the original play by Julian Wiles. Taking place in an art-deco hotel in Charleston, South Carolina, we find Ensign Jack Kennedy (played by Justin West), planning a romantic and secretive weekend with the rumored Nazi supporter, Inga Arvad (played by Courtney Abud). In true Hoover fashion, the file on this affair is opened with Special Agent-in-Charge (played by Gene Storie) and Skip (played by Michael Rodriguez) an overzealous 'virgin agent' trying to make a name for Himself at the Bureau. After bugging the entire room, and then hiding behind a swinging wall, complete with one-way mirror, the G Men set the historical stage for romance, intrigue, and full-frontal farce. (more...)

BWW Preview: MKE Ballet and Michael Pink Elevate Ballet Culture in World Premiere of Wilde's DORIAN GRAY
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Feb 15, 2016

If as Oscar Wilde wrote, 'Beauty is a form of genius, indeed a higher form of genius, and needs no explanation,' the Milwaukee Ballet and Michael PInk affirm this statement with a resounding performance of their World Premiere ballet Dorian Gray. Based on Wilde's late 19th century novella, Pink and his 'dream team,'--Lighting Designer David Grill, Composer Philip Fenney and Costume/Scenic Designer Todd Edward Ivins--sparked magical genius in the first full length ballet staged in the Historic Pabst Theater. Ivins spoke the essence of the moment when he stated, 'A historic occasion in a historic theater.' (more...)

BWW Review: DEFYING GRAVITY Drops the House Down at Theatre Royal Sydney
by Brodie Paparella - Feb 15, 2016

It was every music theatre nerd's dream come true: Broadway legends from Australia and the States converging in Sydney to give intimate treatment to the songs of one of our generation's most acclaimed songwriters. Stephen Schwartz's inimitable music is almost unarguably sure to have passed your lips at some point in the decades he has been active as a treasure of theatre and film. The Academy and Grammy Award-winning composer is best known for his touches on Disney's Pocahontas, as well as contributions to famed musicals Godspell, Pippin and - perhaps most notably - Wicked. BWW Review: Nashville Rep's GOOD MONSTERS
by Jeffrey Ellis - Feb 14, 2016

Make no mistake: Nate Eppler is far too good a playwright to remain Nashville theater's best-kept secret for much longer. If you need further proof of his brilliance (a word I don't use to describe people very often), even after witnessing it first-hand in his earlier plays - like the noirish Rear Widow, the imaginative Larries or the compelling Long Way Down - then get yourself as quickly as humanly possible down to the Tennessee Performing Arts Center's Andrew Johnson Theatre and allow yourself to be immersed in his latest work of stage wizardry: the challenging, enlightening and provocative Good Monsters. BWW Review: ZOOLANDER 2 is Stupid, Cameo-Filled Trip in All the Ways You'd Expect
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 14, 2016

Just in case you were worried that the 15 years between ZOOLANDER 2 and the original male model comedy would lessen the latter's wacky sense of humor, fear not, ZOOLANDER 2 is every bit as stupid as the original, and for fans of the first film, that might be enough to overcome the lack of originality in the sequel's extremely thin plot.
