BWW Interview: Maury Yeston Talks DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY Ahead of London Opening
by Liz Cearns - Jan 23, 2017

Maury Yeston, the composer and lyricist best-known for Nine and Titanic, visited the West End a few months before the West End opening of his new musical, Death Takes a Holiday. Based on a film (which was based on a play) this story tells of how Death changed his perspective. He used to not quite understand why everyone he came to collect was quite so aggrieved to die, until he met a particular woman who allowed Him to realise quite what makes life worth clinging to. The side effect of Death's occupation being, though, that he can't collect anyone else while he's so distracted - Death the person and death the concept take a break!  Maury was kind enough to discuss his musical background, some of his better-known works and his latest venture for the stage. BWW Student Blog: Jessica Vanek - A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC at the Las Vegas Little Theatre Is Anything But Little
by Guest Blogger: Jessica Vanek - Jan 23, 2017

Jess here.  I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend a production of A Little Night Music at the Las Vegas Little Theatre, a well-established theatre company here in town.  As Sondheim is my favorite composer, this was immensely pleasing to see.  The story is set in 1900's Sweden, and follows the lives of Fredrik Egerman and his young wife, Anne.  Their inner turmoil when dealing with all things romantic is apparent from the outset, with "Soon/Later/Now" sung by Anne, Fredrik, and Fredrik's son, Henrik, clearly defining the show's underlying premise of frustration, longing and infidelity.  When actress Desiree Armfeldt, Fredrik's former lover, happens by their town on tour, an opportunity to rekindle the romance comes into play, however foiled by the unexpected arrival of Desiree's married lover, Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm.  Subsequently, the development of several unbeknownst love triangles and pairings surface in Act II, as the group members all rendezvous at the country estate of Desiree's mother, Madame Armfeldt, for a climactic "Weekend in the Country." Photo Flash: OF MICE AND MEN is Brought to Life at Tacoma Little Theatre
by BWW News Desk - Jan 22, 2017

Tacoma Little Theatre begins 2017 with John Steinbeck's classic tale, OF MICE AND MEN, brought to life through the direction of Niclas Olson.  Two drifters, George and his friend Lennie, with delusions of living off the 'fat of the land,' have just arrived at a ranch to work for enough money to buy their own place. Lennie is a man-child, a little boy in the body of a dangerously powerful man. It's Lennie's obsessions with things soft and cuddly that have made George cautious about who the gentle giant, with his brute strength, associates with. His promise to allow Lennie to 'tend to the rabbits' on their future land keeps Lennie calm, amidst distractions, as the overgrown child needs constant reassurance. But when a ranch boss' wife is found dead in the barn with a broken neck, it's obvious that Lennie, albeit accidentally, killed her. George, now worried about his own safety, knows exactly where Lennie has gone to hide, and he meets Him there. Realizing they can't run away anymore, George is faced with a moral question: How should he deal with Lennie before the ranchers find Him and take matters into their own hands? (more...)

The Lake Effect Fringe Festival Kicks Off 5th Season
by BWW News Desk - Jan 21, 2017

The Lake Effect Fringe Festival kicks off its 5th season of bringing new theatre to West Michigan all through the month of February on Wednesday, February 1 and 2, 2017 at 8:00 pm with a performance by Shadblow Theatre, reprising their production of Anatomy of Gray, by Jim Leonard. A coming of age story that is relatable to all. Its themes of community, family, questioning faith, fear of the unknown, acceptance, and love speak to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The play's ensemble driven story-telling, sometimes delightful and sometimes devastating emotional depth, as well as its often presentational style allows this play to truly connect to its audiences. The story follows fifteen-year-old June Muldoon, her mother, the colorful townsfolk of Gray, Indiana, and the mysterious doctor who crash lands in the center of the "most boring town in the world." Seeking to raise questions about what it means to be a part of this incredibly diverse world, the heart of this play touches on themes relevant to all. Fast-paced clever staging, beautiful lyrical narration, and a small but talented nine person ensemble, this play offers a compelling story in an immersive setting that is sure to offer a lot of laughs and a few tears.  (more...)
