BWW Review: No Trouble with Theatre by the Sea's THE MUSIC MAN
by Andria Tieman - Jun 26, 2017

One thing that is incredibly reliable about summer musicals at Theatre by the Sea is that they take the classics you know and love, and perform them at a very high level without trying to go outside of the box.  Shows like Meredith Willson's THE MUSIC MAN are classics for a reason, and even if the script seems slightly dated at times, it hearkens back to a nostalgia that's warm and fuzzy, where you can just sit back and revel in the great songs without having to think too much.  Theatre by the Sea's take on this beloved musical is comforting like a giant vanilla waffle cone on a hot summer's day, but filled with high energy musical numbers, absolutely amazing sets and talented performances.  This is musical theatre at its best, and it's a pleasure to experience it. BWW Review: STAGES St. Louis's Incredibly Fun SEUSSICAL
by Chris Gibson - Jun 26, 2017

There's just something magical about the world of Dr. Seuss and its hold on children. It's the language he uses to tell his fanciful tales. It's re-invented and rhymed in a manner that clearly appeals to children and adults. SEUSSICAL is a catchy and clever musical that adapts various elements from some of his most famous works, and it comes in many shapes and sizes. STAGES St. Louis is presenting a wonderful production of one of the shorter versions in their Theatre for Young Audiences series this season, and I cannot recommend it highly enough! It seems like I'm always saying that at this time of the year, but the professionalism you see each season is amazing, and it continues to develop, especially at the Westport Playhouse, where the intimate confines allow close and plentiful contact with audience members. This particular aspect really makes a difference when you're taking your child to the theatre for the first time. They actually become completely immersed in the experience, and adults will as well. All's fair in love and politics. Maybe that's not the correct saying, but it accurately describes David Hare's SKYLIGHT. BWW Review: I AM NOT A COMEDIAN - I'M LENNY BRUCE Will Open Your Eyes to his Comedic Genius and Dedication to Free Speech
by Shari Barrett - Jun 25, 2017

An undisputed comic legend, Lenny Bruce was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. His life and work have had an impact on poetry, politics, music, film and comedy from Don Rickles to Richard Pryor and Chris Rock, and any other comedian who is now free to speak his/her mind without fear of legal retribution thanks to Bruce challenging our First Amendment freedom of speech rights. Lenny's tempestuous personal and professional life which Marmo embodies with his body, heart and soul, was marked by great passion and great pain, thanks to his unwavering commitment to free speech, which led to numerous obscenity charges and arrests. BWW Review: BASTARD JONES Rocks the House at the Cell Theatre
by Kristen Morale - Jun 25, 2017

"It's not unusual to be loved by anyone…" Admittedly, this is the wrong Tom Jones and yes, I may have stolen this little pun from the show's opening narrative, but that Mr. Jones was on the perfect track to describing what chaos ensues in the life of a man whom everyone adores: the literary Tom Jones. A man who cannot limit his constant self-indulgence but is yet still seen as a good man despite his ill reputed sexual conquests. As a disgrace to both his family and a disappointment to those who truly feel for Him, his reputation is one that follows Him as a sort of fate; and to reverse fate, some pretty drastic things have to happen. Turn all of this into a musical and what we now have is Bastard Jones, an incredibly clever, zany and sexy raucous of a show that is as funny as it is profound. Now in performances at the Cell, this is just the sort of guilty fun that everyone is looking for and, for a little over two hours, will bring such joy to your heart and a "tingle" to everywhere else - prepare yourselves indeed. BWW Interview: Stephen Mark Lukas: Chemistry?...Yeah, Chemistry!
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Jun 24, 2017

'There's this line in the show that I think is key to understanding Sky and Sarah's romance. 'Chemistry?' she asks, and he says, 'Yeah, chemistry.' The message is that when that connection between two people happens, it doesn't really matter what you've predicted for yourself. What's real is the chemistry, not the intellectual idea. Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown each have qualities the other is lacking, and together they fill in the gaps.' The speaker is the charismatic young actor, Stephen Mark Lukas, who will be making his Maine State Music Theatre debut in his first ever performances as the suave gambler Sky Masterson in Frank Loesser Guys and Dolls, which runs at the Pickard Theater from June 28-July 15.
