BWW Review: Maly Drama Theatre's Unforgettable, Explosive THREE SISTERS at the Kennedy Center
by Andrew White - Apr 28, 2017

What makes the Maly production of Three Sisters so compelling is Lev Dudin's ability to show how Chekhov's small-town characters, mired in the mores and beliefs of 1890's provincial Russia, anticipate our own thwarted dreams. Surprises abound, as we discover the inner fire that burns in people we thought we knew as humble, down-home folk. And they become shockingly familiar and contemporary in the process. (more...)

Steve Earle Comes to Boulder Theater 8/4
by BWW News Desk - Apr 28, 2017

Almost twenty years ago, Steve Earle and I took a ride through South Nashville. It was down those mean streets that Steve had spent his famous "hiatus" in the early 1990's mostly shooting dope. It was a crazy, unprecedented thing. Here was a guy - the supposed "new face" of outlaw country - who had already put out a near unbroken string of instant classics, including chart hits like "Guitar Town," "Someday," and the immortal "Copperhead Road." And he just up and disappears, drops from sight for four years, making no records, playing no shows. (more...)

BWW Interview: Lisa O'Hare and Bryce Pinkham Share Why It's 'Loverly' to Reunite for MY FAIR LADY
by Rachel Weinberg - Apr 28, 2017

Shortly before performances began for MY FAIR LADY at Lyric Opera, I had the opportunity to sit down with Lisa O'Hare (Eliza Doolittle) and Bryce Pinkham (Freddy Eynsford-Hill) for a conversation backstage at the opera house. O'Hare and Pinkham are no strangers to working together, as they both originated roles in the 2014 Tony Award-winning musical A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER. Pinkham in fact revealed that one of the reasons he signed on to MY FAIR LADY was to have a 'front-row seat' to see O'Hare's take on Eliza, a role she has performed previously in the West End and in a 2008 U.S. national tour. While dressed in street clothes but still wearing faces full of stage makeup, O'Hare and Pinkham chatted with me about what it's been like to reunite, why they're excited to be involved in this staging of Lerner and Loewe's classic musical, and how it feels to perform on the Lyric stage. Read on for excerpts from the conversation. (more...)

Guest Blog: When Theatre Married Bollywood
by Guest Blogger: Sohaila Kapur - Apr 28, 2017

Theatre in India borrows heavily from folk stories and legends, which are given a contemporary twist. The messages contained in these classics are considered timeless and universal, just as Shakespear's works are regarded in the west. But there is another source from which our theatre borrows ...particularly theatre in North India, and that is Bollywood. It is common practice today to include original songs and dances from popular cinema or a slightly changed version to dodge the copyright act. Adding to this melee are the Indianised versions of Shakespear's plays, some of them commissioned by the Globe Theatre, Britain, that narrate the story through a Bollywood style song and dance routine.
