The London-based Shakespeare's Globe will bring their global touring production of William Shakespeare's Hamlet to Folger Theatre for three performances only on July 25 and 26, 2014, making it the only east coast stop for the company in the United States. Last performed at the Company in 1993, Founding Artistic Director Tina Packer delivers audiences her 'bare-Bard' production of Caesar, marking its final leg of a three city tour-Orlando, Florida, Prague in the Czech Republic, and now at home in Lenox, with Shakespeare & Company. With 7 actors playing multiple roles this poetry-filled psychological and political thriller follows the conspiracy and assassination of the omnipotent Roman leader, and the consequences that ensue from his brutal murder. The title roles of the ancient world's best-remembered celebrity couples will be played by James Sparling and Shawna Tucker in the world premiere Shakespeare's Antony & Cleopatra: UNDONE, a four-character adaptation of Shakespeare's classic masterpiece. Presented by Skyline StageWorks, the dissembled and rebuilt version will allow a more complete psychological exploration of the twin protagonists. By giving the politics less stage time, there will be a tighter focus on the humor, humanity, and allure of the characters. Skyline StageWorks is a new Chicago theatre company devoted to connecting exceptional artists with classic stories in intimate, immediate, and bold stagings. The production will be directed by John Arthur Lewis and will run from Sept 5th to Oct 5th, 2014 at the Side Project, 1439 W. Jarvis, with performances taking place Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Tickets will go on sale July 15th at www.brownpapertickets.com. (more...)

Skyline StageWorks announces its inaugural production, the world premiere of Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra: UNDONE opening Sept 5th at the Side Project space. Shakespeare's original script has been dissembled and rebuilt into a stand-alone version to allow a more intimate psychological exploration of the twin protagonists. The Old Globe today announced the full cast and creative team for the third production of the 2014 Summer Season, Ronald Harwood's comedy Quartet, directed by Richard Seer (Other Desert Cities, God of Carnage, The Last Romance). Shakespeare & Company's Dennis Krausnick, a founder and also Director of Training, steps into the title role of Julius Caesar for a brief run beginning July 15 through August 2. Nigel Gore, who has been playing Caesar since it opened several weeks ago, takes a short-term leave from the show after this weekend's performance on Sunday July 13-Gore will be back in the role Saturday, August 9. Krausnick was last seen on stage in the Playhouse in 2012's King Lear in the title role. See Krausnick's bio and photo links below. (more...)

Franaleo Productions will present the Off-Broadway premiere of Samuel J. Bernstein and Marguerite Krupp's Olympics Über Alles, beginning a limited engagement tomorrow, Wednesday August 27th at St. Luke's Theater (308 West 46th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues). Debra Whitfield directs a cast that features Jim DiMunno Tim Dowd, Michael Engberg, Amy Handra, Darrell Purcell, Joshua Quat, Stewart A. Schneck, and Jenn Susi. This limited run continues through September 21st only. Olympics Über Alles will have scenic and lighting design by Duane Pagano with costume design by Janice O'Donnell and sound and projections design by Paul Bourgeois. William Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra opened on Thursday night at Stratford Festival's Tom Patterson Theatre. Last performed at the festival in 2003, this production stars Geraint Wyn Davies and Yanna McIntosh as the famed Roman General and Queen of Egypt, respectively.
