Bergen County Students Win at 2014 Scholastic Art and Writing Competition

Nineteen students from The Elisabeth Morrow School (EMS) won regional awards in the 2014 Scholastic Art and Writing competition. Each year, more than 250,000 art and writing pieces are submitted by seventh through twelfth grade students across the country, Canada, and U.S. schools abroad. EMS students won with three art and 16 writing submissions, and one of the Four regional Gold Key award winners, Claire Fink of Cresskill, New Jersey, won a National Gold Medal for her personal essay/memoir Braving Fear. Historically, the national gold medal winners represent the top 1% of entries. (more...)

The Houston Symphony and Musicians Reach Four-Year Labor Agreement

The Houston Symphony Society, along with its musicians, announced today thatthey have reached a Four-year labor agreement significantly ahead of schedule. The new agreement will continue aseries of musician salary increases intended to retain and attract the finest orchestra musicians possible and createnew opportunities for expanded community/educational activities and revenue-generating concerts whilemaintaining a sustainable financial position. Under the terms of the next contract, Houston Symphony minimummusician salary will increase an average of 2.85% annually to $97,240 during the 2017-18 season from its currentlevel of $86,840. René Magritte, the playful and provocative Belgian Surrealist who set out to create works that would 'challenge the real world' by making 'everyday objects shriek out loud,' is the focus of a major exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago: Magritte, The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926-1938. The show opens June 24, 2014 and runs through October 13, 2014 in Regenstein Hall. A collaborative effort between three museums, the exhibition will make its final stop at the Art Institute following its premiere at The Museum of Modern Art in New York on September 28, 2013 and its current run at the Menil Collection, Houston. Texas counties selected Odyssey because the system eliminates manual processes, provides a paperless workflow and delivers data integration between courts, prosecuting attorneys, law enforcement and corrections, which creates efficiencies across county offices. The counties that recently selected Odyssey are Smith, Henderson, Andrews, Childress, Atascosa, Refugio, Montgomery, Parker, Brazoria, Howard, Morris, Winkler and San Jacinto. This new group of Odyssey clients includes satisfied Tyler clients extending their relationship and moving to the Odyssey case management system, as well as new members of the Tyler family. UWM Department of Dance Receives NEA Grant

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa has announced that University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) Department of Dance is one of 886 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. UWM Department of Dance at the Peck School of the Arts is recommended for a $15,000 grant to support the restaging of Trisha Brown's signature work Set and Reset (1983) as the focal point of Brown: Lineage and Process, a year-long exploration of Brown's creative ideas during the 2014-2015 academic year. UWM is one of only Four colleges and universities in the United States that received a grant this year in the dance artistic field. (more...)

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa announced that the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids program has received a $100,000 National Endowment for the Arts Art Works grant. The grant will support and sustain all initiatives of the OrchKids program including a full symphonic orchestra, choir classes, chamber music coaching, musicianship instruction and academic tutoring.
