BWW Review: RSVP 'Yes' to Game-Changing MADAME DRAGON'S 60TH BIRTHDAY BASH at Café Nordo
by Amelia Reynolds - Jan 16, 2017

It's easy to feel skeptical when young Sara Porkalob steps onto Cafe Nordo's stage and claims to be celebrating her sixtieth birthday. But with her effortless 'still-got-it' physicality and chutzpa, Porkalob became a believably spry sixty-years-young Madame Dragon. In her latest iteration of her one-woman show 'The Dragon Lady'--Porkalob's tribute to her gangster grandma--'Madame Dragon's 60th Birthday' is an expansive and immersive tribute that tells Maria Porkalob's (aka Madame Dragon) stories of sex, murder and motherhood through spoken word, music, and food. This is not just dinner theatre. This is a party. (more...)

BWW Interview: Salisha Thomas of BEAUTIFUL - THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL at The Bushnell
by Joseph Harrison - Jan 16, 2017

When BEAUTIFUL - THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL opens on January 17 at Hartford's Bushnell Theatre, audiences will discover that though they may think they know the songs of Carole King, there is such a rich story behind those familiar lyrics and catchy melodies. BEAUTIFUL tells the true story of King's rise to stardom and illustrates how she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation. THE FINALE'S MASTER STROKE is Published by Linda Leven
by BWW News Desk - Jan 16, 2017

In this shocking but profoundly philosophical novella, Linda, through an appalling tale of intense drama follows Four women artists as they struggle to achieve recognition in their chosen fields. In this shocking but profoundly philosophical novella, 'The Finale's Master Stroke,' Linda, through an appalling tale of intense drama follows Four women artists, three photographers and a writer, as they struggle to achieve recognition in their chosen fields. It is, in essence, a tale of those who grope in the dark and are finally driven to the wall, never succeeding ... and those who 'make it.' Fame, eminence, immortality-these are the only goals that drive Anne Sinclaire, an aged woman still seeking success in her ebbing life. But, is it too late for Anne to discover some astonishing talent hidden within her? Can she become a great painter, writer, composer, singer, or dancer? Or is she ordinary, destined to be a nobody-her name and life obliterated by death. This appears to be Anne's destiny until an electrifying revelation strikes, a revelation unmasked by the populace and affirmed by three needy artists who wander into her life. The work is a study of struggling artists, young and old, and what it really takes to reach a defined level of success in today's super-connected world of instant media coverage and the worldwide internet where everyone has been liberated to freely toss his own mediocrity or genius into the immense conglomeration of voices around the world, all competing to 'make it.' BWW Review: Grigolo's No Dime-Store ROMEO Opposite Damrau in Gounod's Opera at the Met
by Richard Sasanow - Jan 15, 2017

There's some famous and gorgeous music in Gounod's ROMEO ET JULIETTE—Juliet's waltz, Romeo's “Ah, leve-toi, soleil” and a number of duets —but this is definitely not one of those operas where the title characters can take turns with the showpieces but never look each other in the eye. Luckily, that wasn't the case with Diana Damrau and Vittorio Grigolo in the Met's new Bartlett Sher production, where they lit some fires at Tuesday's performance. (more...)
