Bergen County Students Win at 2014 Scholastic Art and Writing Competition

Nineteen students from The Elisabeth Morrow School (EMS) won regional awards in the 2014 Scholastic Art and Writing competition. Each year, more than 250,000 art and writing pieces are submitted by seventh through twelfth grade students across the country, Canada, and U.S. schools abroad. EMS students won with three art and 16 writing submissions, and one of the Four regional Gold Key award winners, Claire Fink of Cresskill, New Jersey, won a National Gold Medal for her personal essay/memoir Braving Fear. Historically, the national gold medal winners represent the top 1% of entries. (more...)

Theodora Skipitares to Bring THE CHAIRS to LaMama, 5/22-6/8

In Ionesco's absurdist masterpiece, 'The Chairs,' an elderly couple set out chairs for an audience to listen to a world-changing pronouncement from an orator who turns out to be a deaf-mute. Puppet theater maestro Theodora Skipitares wondered what would happen if the chairs themselves were world-changers. Her newest work, 'The Chairs,' presented by La MaMa E.T.C. May 22 to June 8, is a response to Ionesco, but that's where the similarity ends. Skipitares' chairs are incarnations of people like Malala, Stephen Hawking and Nelson Mandela and their messages are, well, not absurd. (more...)

The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced today the details for Fassbinder: Romantic Anarchist (Part 1), May 16 – June 1. Divided into two parts, the retrospective will be the most extensive presentation of Fassbinder's films in New York since 1997, with Part 1 including almost all of his work leading up to 1974 and Part 2 (screening in November) to pick up from 1974 through 1982. The ambitious two-part series will include all of his theatrical features, much of his television work, films he starred in, films that influenced him, and films that were influenced by his work. The Houston Symphony Society, along with its musicians, announced today thatthey have reached a Four-year labor agreement significantly ahead of schedule. The new agreement will continue aseries of musician salary increases intended to retain and attract the finest orchestra musicians possible and createnew opportunities for expanded community/educational activities and revenue-generating concerts whilemaintaining a sustainable financial position. Under the terms of the next contract, Houston Symphony minimummusician salary will increase an average of 2.85% annually to $97,240 during the 2017-18 season from its currentlevel of $86,840. The show opens June 24, 2014 and runs through October 13, 2014 in Regenstein Hall. A collaborative effort between three museums, the exhibition will make its final stop at the Art Institute following its premiere at The Museum of Modern Art in New York on September 28, 2013 and its current run at the Menil Collection, Houston.
