BWW Reviews: Emotionally Flat FLEAVEN Fizzles Instead of PopsBWW Reviews: Emotionally Flat FLEAVEN Fizzles Instead of Pops
by David Clarke - Nov 3, 2012

It is the mission of The Catastrophic Theatre to destroy audiences with impressive and unique theatre. Unfortunately, the World Premiere of FLEAVEN only destroys audiences by sending them out into the world wondering what was missing. At 27 years old, I thought maybe it was not living through the Disco era that left me benumbed by the performance. However, it's disco era vibe pastiche is fleshed out with 90s inspired rap beats and cultural references from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Furthermore, my parents' eclectic tastes in everything pop-cultural ensured that I had a strong understanding of many things I did not live through. So, simply put, that wasn't it. The problem was that despite laughing out loud at a few outlandish and genuinely humorous moments, I simply was not moved in any emotionally tangible way. From beginning to end, I felt no emotional connection to this Grinchian tale? (Think of Grinchian as being similar to Faustian, but with Dr. Suess' Grinch.) (more...)

BWW Reviews: Eklektix Theatre's MACBETH Shows Strong Potential But Falls a Bit ShortBWW Reviews: Eklektix Theatre's MACBETH Shows Strong Potential But Falls a Bit Short
by David Clarke - Jan 5, 2013

More often than not, theatres produce Shakespeare with a unique, modernizing spin. Keeping in this vein, Eklektix Theatre's Artistic Director Bryan-Keyth Wilson has adapted William Shakespeare's tragedy MACBETH, setting it in a post apocalyptic urban wasteland in the year 3013. Likewise, Bryan-Keyth Wilson, in adapting the play, has made some cuts to the script, which ensure that William Shakespeare's script about betrayal, murder, vanity, paranoia, and madness moves at a break-neck pace. Performing a one-person show can be a daunting task. After all, even in a two-person show there's someone else to guide you should you go astray, or come up suddenly blank. Of course, you also need a good script or, at least a sturdy framework, to allow the actor to succeed. But, when both of these things click, it's a wondrous thing to experience. That's exactly what occurs in Stray Dog Theatre's brilliant production of Fully Committed, as sharp direction (Gary Bell), impeccable acting (Greg Fenner), and a funny play (Becky Mode) come together in must-see fashion.
