BWW Reviews: WAIT UNTIL DARK Is Worth Seeing - and Hearing - at Northwest Classical
by Patrick Brassell - Sep 7, 2014

Their production of Wait Until Dark is based on a revised script by Jeffrey Hatcher that premiered in 2013. The original, by Frederick Knott, opened in 1966 and was set at that time; this version is backdated to the 1940s. The loot is slightly different, and there are a few four-letter words added to the text, but beyond these cosmetic touches the script is the same. (more...)

BWW Interview: Julie Taymor on A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and Theatre on Film
by Alan Henry - Sep 15, 2014

Julie Taymor is no Stranger to being innovative in the theater. In 1997 she became the first woman to win the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for her production of 'The Lion King.' That same night she also walked away with the prize for costume design. No one had ever seen a production on Broadway that was even remotely similar to 'The Lion King.' Taymor used to great effect techniques she had learned while studying masked dance-drama and puppetry in Indonesia (she had also studied these techniques at the American Society for Eastern Arts in Seattle.) Her combination of stunning visuals and expanded story telling led to an immediate hit - which is still running today and is one of the highest grossing musicals of all time. (more...)

Now in Print & eBook: 'Seven Days to Goodbye' by South Carolina Author Sheri S. Levy
by BWW News Desk - Sep 14, 2014

Barking Rain Press, a non-profit fiction publisher, announced the paperback and eBook release of the engaging YA service dog puppy raiser novel, 'Seven Days to Goodbye' by Simsonville, South Carolina author Sheri S. Levy. 'Seven Days to Goodbye is Levy's first novel; her article about a Diabetic Alert dog, 'Scent with Love,' was published in 'Clubhouse Magazine' and was nominated for a Maxwell Medallion Award from the Dog Writer's Association of America (DWAA). After Trina's beloved dog dies, she swears she'll never get another one. But then she learns about service dogs, and realizes if she becomes a puppy raiser, she could train puppy after puppy and never worry about them dying. But like all great ideas, this one has a serious flaw: her first service puppy must be returned to his kennel at the end of their week-long summer vacation. And saying goodbye to Sydney is going to be much tougher than she ever imagined. Trina's last week with Sydney is made that much harder by her newly strained friendship with her best friend, Sarah, who's become so over-the-top boy crazy that she's almost like a Stranger. Sarah is determined to have them hang out with every boy at the beach, but when a boy named Chase takes an interest in Sydney and Trina, it puts an even bigger strain on the friendship. It's hard enough to deal with losing Sydney, but now she may lose her best friend, too. And even if she manages to patch things up with Sarah-and figures out what to do about Chase-she still must face a daunting decision: is she strong enough to take on another service puppy? Ask for 'Seven Days to Goodbye' at your favorite bookstore, or buy it online at the Barking Rain Press website, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, Powells, Waterstones, and many other Internet bookstores. It is also available as an eBook through Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, iTunes iBooks, Kobo, InkBok, Content Reserve/Overdrive, the Barking Rain Press website and many other outlets worldwide. BWW Blog: THE RESIDUALS Say 'Support Your Friends... Do It Now!'
by The Residuals - Sep 12, 2014

I didn't get into this business to be the first actor, or the only actor. I'm pretty sure some Greek person locked that up a few thousand years ago. So why, after not a whole helluva lot of years out of college, did I greet news of my friends' and acquaintances' successes with little more than fear and self-consciousness? Furthermore: why did I even greet news of their failures and setbacks (real talk, now) with some sub-level of relief? Why don't we like each other's work more often? Why is it easier to watch a Stranger's work than someone we know? Why; for that matter, do some of the greatest actors this world has to offer get crapped on via the anonymous internet every day? BWW---I submit to you now---that the response to those questions, and to your impulses to do the same, is that it shouldn't be that way, and it doesn't have to be. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Moonlight Amphitheatre, Vista Rolls Out Red Carpet for CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
by Don Grigware - Sep 12, 2014

It used to be, in days gone by, that hit Broadway shows would be made into movies; now, it's the reverse. With a dearth of ideas for Broadway musicals, the trend lately has been to turn to the big screen and revamp a popular film for the stage, adding song and dance. Such was the case with 9 to 5 and later Legally Blonde engendering quite a bit of success. Those two had female stars at the core, so it's high time a male got some attention. Voila! Catch Me If You Can has a quirky real-life story about an anti-hero Frank Abagnale Jr. (Jacob Haren) who in the 60s was called the Johnny Appleseed of fraud. The outstanding creative team of book writer Terrence McNally and musical wizards Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman took an old idea and created an entertainingly fresh showcase around it. The resultant Catch Me If You Can which received several Tony Award nominations in 2012 - one win for Norbert Leo Butz as Best Featured Actor playing Agent Carl Hanratty - is now playing in its West Coast regional premiere in Vista at the Moonlight Amphitheatre with Josh Adamson essaying Hanratty.
