BWW Recap: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Sets Its Eyes on the EclipseBWW Recap: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Sets Its Eyes on the Eclipse

I'm constantly trying to reinvent myself in different ways. Whether it's my hair color, style, clothing, last name, first name...oops, I've said too much. Just know that one time I tried to reinvent myself as a witch named Gertrude and things didn't work out so well for a guy that now has purple hair, one eyebrow, and a lizard for a left hand. I quickly reinvented myself as a 20-something New Yorker that watches and writes about shows on some network called The CW. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Newest Broadway Revival of PIPPIN Provides Spills and Thrills at the PantagesBWW Reviews: Newest Broadway Revival of PIPPIN Provides Spills and Thrills at the Pantages
by Don Grigware - Oct 23, 2014

In 1972 Pippin opened on Broadway and became one of the longest running musicals in Broadway history, closing in 1977. Stephen Schwartz's bubbling optimistic tunes made the surreal and sensual mood of the piece an ultra-pleasant experience for theatre goers. One actually left the theatre humming the score. Throughout the dreamlike texture of Pippin's quest for his 'Corner of the Sky', however, there blooms a simplistic, timeless message that reverberates to this day. So, even though this brand new revival set in a circus big top is visually more opulent with high swinging artists and feats of magic, the pieces of the puzzle do fit into place - original director Bob Fosse would approve - and the play's substance is untarnished. Director Diane Paulus may take a bow for her simply stunning ambition of embellishment. I prefer the simplicity of the original, which allows your imagination to take flight, but must own up to enjoying most of the new version. How can you not, as the Fosse-esque style with acrobatics added on make for a visually splendid evening of dance and action. (more...)

BWW Recap: Can MADAM SECRETARY Stop A War With Canada? WHAT??BWW Recap: Can MADAM SECRETARY Stop A War With Canada? WHAT??
by Scott Fullerton - Oct 20, 2014

Hey Stranger Friends, it's your tried and true MADAM SECRETARY recapper and reviewer here, and this week had both McCord's, our Secretary and husband Henry, refusing to suffer fools gladly. Our Secretary had two healthy servings of issues on her plate this week, and once again the writers do not shy away from taking stories out of our recent, real-life headlines. One of my favorite and versatile character actors, Robert Kline, guest stars as Canadian Ambassador Clark, who is pressuring the Secretary to release a report that supports a controversial oil pipeline from Canada to the U.S., and negotiations to get inspectors back into Iran's nuclear program, are souring badly. Henry is the subject his son's most recent school assignment, and a casual lunch to discuss dad's past takes an interesting turn (more...)

by Scott Fullerton - Oct 16, 2014

All right Stranger Friends, we have made it to episode 5 of the RED BAND SOCIETY and FOX is sticking with it so far, even with ratings that are lower than expected. If you picked this episode to start watching, or if the studio heads need a reminder why to keep the show on the air, this was the one to watch. Octavia Spencer reminds us that she is in fact an Oscar Winning actress, and shines so bright in this episode, I had to wear shades. I knew we would find out why our series narrator, Charlie aka Coma Boy, got into his current condition, and I was really hoping it could change his name to something cool, like Motorcycle Dude, or Rock Climbing Kid. No such luck. (more...)

by Wendi Reichstein - Oct 15, 2014

At the beginning of the NASHVILLE episode we're left with a lot of questions (though I'm sure I say this every week…it being a high-intensity drama, and all). Gunnar and Scarlett have some sexual-tension-filled-quasi-romance going on, that Zoe is slowly but surely becoming more aware and jealous of, Avery is seconds away from an obvious alcohol binge-turned-addiction, Juliette is in search of an adoption agency, and Jeff Fordham shows up at Maddie and Daphne's school with a questionable $25,000 donation and a silent auction bid to golf with the mayor. The only question we don't have is whether we will see Ms. Broadway Baby Laura Benanti (Rayna's request to meet with Sadie Stone in the first scene of the evening solidifies this…thank goodness!).
