Saturday Night on Broadway!: A Hilarious History of SNL and The Great White Way
by Alexa Criscitiello - Oct 8, 2016

There is a belief among those in the public eye that you can't say you've truly 'made it' until Saturday Night Live has spoofed you. As evidenced by the show's long and well-documented history of pop-cultural and political satire, it is evident that no one is safe from SNL's finely tuned eye for current events and cultural happenings. BWW Review: Classic RAISIN IN THE SUN at Rep Spotlights How Far We Haven't Come
by Jay Irwin - Oct 6, 2016

There are certain plays out there that remain enduring classics. Maybe they're just that good. Or maybe they still pack a punch all these years later and resonate with attitudes of today. Well the Seattle Rep is presenting one on those classics with Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" and while it falls firmly into that first category of "just that good" unfortunately watching it last night I also felt how far we have and haven't come since it debuted in 1959 as many of the themes of inequality and prejudice on display are still all too prevalent today. BWW Review: TRAVESTIES, Menier Chocolate Factory, 4 October 2016
by Marianka Swain - Oct 5, 2016

Wilde, Joyce, Shakespeare, Lenin, memory, the morality of war, social systems, and the meaning and purpose of art: Stoppard's dazzlingly intellectual 1974 play really is a life, the universe and everything affair. Thankfully, Patrick Marber's fleet-footed revival is equally attuned to its wit and skittish strangeness, offering a lifeline to audience members who may be nodding fervently at the line 'I'm finding this conversation extremely hard to follow'. Photo Coverage: Todd Murray & Stacy Sullivan Bring SEPARATE WAYS to Feinstein's/54 Below
by Stephen Sorokoff - Oct 5, 2016

Critically acclaimed artists Stacy Sullivan and Todd Murray brought a thought provoking, sometime humorous, and musically entertaining look at the very human quandary of 'should I stay or should I go with '  with their show Separate Ways to Feinstein's/54 Below last night and Broadwayworld was there. They say that breaking up is hard to do; most certainly. But with writers such as George Gershwin, Joni Mitchell, Adam Guettel, Adele, we find that skies can be sunny blue or grey, and goodbyes can be happy. Songwriters have looked for ways to express the angst of people's need to be joined and separate at the same time. Todd and Stacy are masters at bringing honesty and life to their lyrics. (more...)

Three best friends from Washington got together and decided to make a musical. The rest is history - or at least it will be when the cast of LIZARD BOY makes their San Diego debut at Diversionary Theatre this September. Kirsten deLohr Helland, Justin Huertasand William A. Williams make up the entire cast and band of LIZARD BOY, a fantastical comic-book rock concert-slash-theatrical explosion. Director Brandon Ivie originally staged the show at Seattle Repertory, and will return to stage it fresh for Diversionary. (more...)

Photo Flash: A Red Orchid Theatre's Presents THE ROOM
by BWW News Desk - Oct 4, 2016

By turns terrifying, moving and wildly funny, The Room is Pinter's very first play. Rose prefers to stay in, safe from the hostile world outside, but her seemingly cozy sanctuary is continually being invaded. With visits from the landlord, a couple in search of their own space, a Stranger and the return of her husband, it becomes increasingly unclear whether the menace comes from within or without. The Room is a precarious examination of private fears vs. social fears, as seen through the lens of the working class. (more...)

BWW Review: OIL, Almeida Theatre, 14 October 2016
by Marianka Swain - Oct 17, 2016

You have to admire the grand scope of Ella Hickson's long-gestating new play, which grapples with urgent ideas about this vital but declining resource amidst audacious magic realist time travel. Stretching from 19th-century Cornwall to a dystopian future, it's DH Lawrence meets Black Mirror, by way of David Hare - anchored by insightful deconstruction of the mother/daughter relationship. If it becomes unwieldy in places, it's still a rich and absorbing piece of work, and an all-too-rare female odyssey. (more...)

Mary's aspirations of becoming a nun are in further jeopardy when her childhood sweetheart reappears and declares his love. Will she give up a life of Sisterhood for the man of her dreams? Or will she choose another path and listen to an eccentric priest who proclaims her to be the world's next savior in this delightful comedy that puts the 'fun' in fundamentalism. The preview performance of Hail Mary! is Thursday, November 3.
