BWW Recap: M is for MURDER on AMERICAN HORROR STORY
by Jessica Naftaly - Sep 22, 2016

This weeks episode of American Horror Story came with the series' subtitle “Roanoke”. Thus, the possibility that this will be several anthologies or hauntings captured in a faux- documentary episodic format is pretty much debunked; however, that doesn't mean that this season will be in anyway straightforward. This is American Horror Story after all!  (more...)

Guest Blog: Composer Joshua Schmidt On ADDING MACHINE: A MUSICAL
by Guest Blogger: Joshua Schmidt - Sep 21, 2016

One could say that the Machine chose me first, then I chose it. Adapting Elmer Rice's 1923 expressionist juggernaut was the long-time dream of librettist Jason Loewith. Apparently he had approached other composers with the project to no avail. When he finally inquired as to my interest in the project in January of 2004, I was working as a sound designer on a show he was producing at the Next Theatre Company in Evanston, Illinois, where he served as Artistic Director. Up to that point, I had never written a musical, nor did envision myself writing one and I had never read, seen or even heard of Elmer Rice's The Adding Machine. (more...)

BWW Blog: Christopher Castanho - New Musical: Come From Away
by Christopher Castanho - Sep 21, 2016

This production is a perfect example of why I am enamored with Theatre and Art, and why I am proud to be part of this community. The show not only shared a historical event but gifted us with sharing the power of empathy. The love and selflessness the citizens of Gander and Newfoundland had for all of the foreign travelers is astonishing. The locals 'took in' and fed 6,579 stranded passengers, which was half the size of the town's population. (more...)

M. K. Christopher Pens CHRONICLES OF GENESIS: ASCENSION
by BWW News Desk - Sep 20, 2016

M. K. Christopher, author of the new book 'Chronicles of Genesis: Ascension', is a chicken-eating, hoodie-wearing, door-holding, trumpet-playing, sheep-worshiping, joke-telling, book-writing, game-playing, science-shouting young adult born in Illinois. The only awards he ever won were for wearing a sweatshirt throughout all of summer at band camp and for holding the door for the entirety of the band for three years in a row. Marc also started a running meme of 'Get serious!' and 'All hail the sheep!' just because he could. He plays the trumpet and the French horn and loves video games, comedy, science, and chickens, because he thinks they are awesome. His favorite quality of life is irony, because a joke is a very serious thing. He is not some great artistic legendary master of ink and paper. He is a simple, 'slightly' vulgar, sarcastic, anonymous mortal with a pen, some paper, and a dream. (more...)

BWW Review: GYPSY at Music Theatre Of Connecticut
by Melinda Zupaniotis - Sep 19, 2016

With a minimalist set depicting an abandoned stage - brick wall, ladder, random set pieces, and a piano - Music Theatre of Connecticut begins its 30th season with the iconic musical, Gypsy. Written in 1959, Gypsy harnesses the dream-team creative talents of music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by Arthur Laurents, plus the original production was directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins. All of these legends combined certainly raises the bar for expectation, and therefore, this show can be a difficult one for any theatre to produce. All in all, MTC did a good job of presenting this whirlwind piece. You should go! (more...)

BWW Review: A Hypnotic Rod Gilfry Is No LOSER in David Lang's 'Next Wave' Premiere at BAM
by Richard Sasanow - Sep 13, 2016

While listening to baritone Rod Gilfry's masterful, mesmerizing performance in the world premiere of David Lang's monodrama, THE LOSER, at BAM's “Next Wave Festival,” I thought I could listen to him sing the telephone book. Come to think of it, he came pretty close to that, at BAM's Howard Gilman Opera House, with this one-hour post-minimalist rant about the effect of the brilliant pianist Glenn Gould on the careers of lesser musicians.
