Tony nominee Thomas Kail (Lombardi, In The Heights) will reunite with Lombardi playwright and Oscar winner and Emmy Nominee Eric Simonson on MAGIC/BIRD, a new play chronicling the intertwined life stories of two of the most influential figures in sports and pop culture of the past 25 years, basketball Hall of Famers Larry Bird and Earvin ‘Magic' Johnson. Thomas Kail-Helmed MAGIC/BIRD to Begin Previews on Broadway Feb. 27

According to an audition notice out today, the production will go into rehearsal on January 23, 2012 and begin previews on February 27. An opening date and theater have yet to be announced. According to Ennis King, the older brother in Nathan Louis Jackson's Broke-ology that opens for previews at the Kitchen Theatre on April 4th and runs through April 22nd, he has developed a new scientific theory. As Ennis explains to his younger brother Malcolm, "Broke-ology…is a complex new science that examines two things. One, being broke. Two, staying alive despite your brokenness." Ennis and Malcolm are experts in Broke-ology, and their situation is complicated by their aging father William's quickening decline. Poverty, the American dream and the ties that bind a family together are brought into focus in this new play. (more...)
