In addition to the festival's annual selection of Presented Fringe performances by internationally renowned contemporary artists and stars of Philadelphia's stages, this year's 130-plus independently produced Neighborhood Fringe artists will take the city by storm for a record-setting 18 days this fall, presenting more than 700 performances of cutting-edge dance, theater, comedy, visual art and more in every neighborhood, from Fishtown to Fairmount, West Philly to Old City. Lincoln Center Theater, under the direction of Producing Artistic Director Andre Bishop, has announced that Bianca Amato, Shirine Babb, John Patrick Doherty, Austin Durant, Richard Easton, Francesca Faridany, Stephanie Fieger, Malcolm Gets, John Glover, Ben Horner, Ruy Iskandar, Brian d'Arcy James, Byron Jennings, Aaron Krohn, Jeremiah Maestas, Christopher McHale, Jonny Orsini, Sam Poon, Triney Sandoval, Nathan Stark, Daniel Sunjata, Patrick Vaill, Tyler Lansing Weaks and Derek Wilson will join Ethan Hawke and Anne-Marie Duff in its upcoming production of Shakespeare's MACBETH, directed by Jack O'Brien. The production, which will feature a cast of 27, will begin previews on Thursday, October 24 and open on Thursday, November 21 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater (150 West 65 Street). (more...)

Aurora Theatre Mourns Passing of Founding Artistic Director Barbara Oliver

Burning Coal Theatre Company Announces 8-Week Classes for Adults

Burning Coal Theatre Company's artistic director, Jerome Davis, will conduct an eight week acting class based on the concepts the legendary acting teacher, Uta Hagen. The class will take place Mondays from 7 to 10 pm, June 10 through July 29th. The class is a scene study class which emphasizes ideas discussed in Ms. Hagen's landmark book Respect for Acting. THE LYONS, SAINT JOAN & More Set for 2nd Story's 2013-14 UpStage/DownStage Season

Can there be too much of a good thing? From the enthusiastic response to the news that 2nd Story planned to double the number of plays produced this season, it seems the answer is a resounding 'no'. Of building a 70-seat second space and adding programming, Artistic Director Ed Shea said, 'For years 2nd Story operated under the assumption that less is more, but it turns out more is more. When it comes to professional-quality live theatre, there cannot be too much of a good thing. Not only is there a market for more, there is a need and a desire for more. With the construction of our second space, we can give audiences more comedy, more drama, more entertainment, and more food for thought.' (more...)

Bedlam's SAINT JOAN Revival to Return Off-Broadway at Access Theater, 3/6

Access Theater will present a 4-week encore engagement of Bedlam's critically acclaimed Off-Broadway revival of George Bernard Shaw's rarely produced 1923 masterpiece Saint Joan. In this bold, environmental staging directed by Eric Tucker, Shaw's play is performed in its entirety using an ensemble of only four actors to play all 24 roles. Performances begin March 6 at Access Theater where it will play in repertory with a new production of HAMLET as performed by the same four actors. (more...)
