Arena Stage Announces Partnerships & Schedule for Eugene O'Neill Festival

In homage to one of America's greatest playwrights, Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater hosts the Eugene O'Neill Festival, a two-month examination of the life and work of O'Neill. Similar to the Edward Albee Festival in 2011, this celebration will feature unique collaborations with other arts and education institutions in a diverse program of events. The Eugene O'Neill Festival runs March 9-May 6, 2012 and is sponsored by Joan and David Maxwell. (more...)

Ah, Wilderness!, Eugene O'Neill's joyous and truthful depiction of American family life at the turn of the 20thcentury, will kick off the two-month citywide Eugene O'Neill Festival at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater. From a playwright better known for his darker stories comes the brilliant Ah, Wilderness!, O'Neill's singular comedy that represents a fantasy of what his own childhood might have been. Helen Hayes Award winner and former Arena Stage Associate Artistic Director Kyle Donnelly returns to direct her 21st show at Arena Stage, which features an almost entirely local cast led by Rick Foucheux, Nancy Robinette and June Schreiner. Ah, Wilderness! runs March 9-April 8, 2012 in the Fichandler Stage. (more...)

FOX Cancels Katie Finneran's I Hate My Teenage Daughter

FOX's I Hate My Teenage Daughter, starring Katie Finneran, has been canceled, Entertainment Weekly reports. The comedy will play its final episode of the season on Tuesday, April 3. A recent episode of the show only garnered 3.6 million viewers and a 1.4 rating among adults aged 18-49. FOX may air the remaining episodes over the summer. (more...)

The Old Globe just began performances for Anna Christie, Eugene O'Neill's masterpiece about the knotty relationship between an old sailor and his estranged daughter. The production is directed by Daniel Goldstein, who is currently represented on Broadway with the hit revival of Godspell. Anna Christie will run through April 15, 2012 in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Preview performances run through March 14. Opening night is Thursday, March 15 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.TheOldGlobe.org, by phone at (619) 23-GLOBE or by visiting the Box Office at 1363 Old Globe Way in Balboa Park. Actor Leonardo Cimino Has Died

According to The New York Times, actor Leonardo Cimino died on March 3rd at his home in Woodstock, N.Y. He was 94 years old. His wife, Sharon Powers, told the newspaper that his death was caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. (more...)

A Mr. Mark Squirek -- a non-facebook subscriber but an individual with an evidently keen interest in theater -- sent me this response to a recently posted review of Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh, now at the Fells Point Corner Theater. To post responses to BWW reviews requires facebook membership (it's a way to eliminate anonymous, hateful postings), but not everyone has joined the millions taking the facebook plunge. I was impressed enough with the detail and depth of this letter to include it as a READER FEEDBACK column. I will say that I am a member of the ICEMAN cast, so I believe it only right to note that here. In any event, here is Mr. Squirek's comments. (more...)
