by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Sep 24, 2014

Think fairytales can be out of fashion? Please think again. Fairytales represent stories beloved and valued by every culture for untold centuries. So when a contemporary, in high fashion fairytale opens the 2014-2015 Skylight Music Theatre's 56th season bringing Milwaukee 'Fairytales and Fantasy' under Artistic Director Viswa Subbaraman, please applaud this opportunity to renew faith to the 21st century. 'COLLECTORS III: Discerning Eyes' at New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks'COLLECTORS III: Discerning Eyes' at New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks
by BWW News Desk - Sep 20, 2014

Curated by Robert P. Stack and Vanphouthon Souvannasane of Yellow Peril Gallery, 'COLLECTORS III: Discerning Eyes' at New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks! presents early works from contemporary art collectors based in Providence (RI), New York (NY), Miami (FL), and Caguas (PR) who are ahead of the curve at distinguishing the good from the bad and sifting out the gems from the junk. 'With this exhibit, we aim to open up the conversation with regard to Whom and What,' says Stack. 'One doesn't have to wait for that winning lottery ticket to begin including art in your life. Collecting can and should commensurate with your lifestyle. Likewise,' he adds, 'collecting should not be limited to wall-hung visual art. Video, street art, light art, installation art and performance art are all collectible in today's market.' Whether the artwork was pried off the all from a dilapidated building, purchased directly from the artist, performed in front on an intimate crowd of 10 people or taken from the trunk of a fledging art dealer in the streets of SoHo, many of the works presented in 'Discerning Eyes' have never been seen by the general public until now. 'The people invited to share their collections are from ordinary backgrounds with extraordinary tastes,' notes Souvannasane. 'They include a museum guard, advertising executive, architect, real estate developer, doctor and lawyer.' 'COLLECTORS III: Discerning Eyes' will be on display at New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks! from September 26 to November 16. Several site-specific installations will be presented by Philippe Lejeune and Jessica Deane Rosner. Featured Programming includes: · Opening Reception > Friday, September 26, 6PM - 8PM Special Performance by Richard Goulis. Free admission. · Performance is an Art > October 16, 7PM - 9PM Liz Munsell, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at MFA, Boston presents 4 live performances by artists Ian Deleón, Shey Rivera Ríos, Quintín Rivera Toro and Anabel Vázquez Rodríguez. Register online, call or visit the museum. Family members are encouraged to join their kids in experiencing these fun activities. Ages 6-9 years. · Film Screening of Herb & Dorothy > Thursday, October 23, 7PM - 9PM This documentary features Herbert and Dorothy Vogel, a former postal clerk and a librarian, who built a world-class collection of Minimal and Conceptual Art with their modest salaries. Free admission. · Thrill of the Hunt > Thursday, November 6, 7PM - 8PM Panel discussion on demystifying the art collecting process Panelists include: Judith Tolnick Champa, Independent Curator, Art Writer & Board Member, New England Museum Association; Cassie Sammartino Berg, Contemporary Art Collector; and Robert P. Skylight Books Presents Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang, 10/15Skylight Books Presents Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang, 10/15
by BWW News Desk - Oct 8, 2014

Skylight Books (1818 N. Vermont in Los Feliz) presents Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang on Wednesday, October 15 at 7:30pm. Skylight Books is thrilled to welcome acclaimed writer and activist Cory Doctorow and illustrator Jen Wang to present their new graphic novel, In Real Life. The story is about Anda who loves Coarsegold Online, the massively-multiplayer role playing game that she spends most of her free time on. It's a place where she can be a leader, a fighter, a hero. It's a place where she can meet people from all over the world, and make friends. Gaming is, for Anda, entirely a good thing. But things become a lot more complicated when Anda befriends a gold farmer - a poor Chinese kid whose avatar in the game illegally collects valuable objects and then sells them to players from developed countries with money to burn. This behavior is strictly against the rules in Coarsegold, but Anda soon comes to realize that questions of right and wrong are a lot less straightforward when a real person's real livelihood is at stake. From acclaimed teen author Cory Doctorow and rising star cartoonist Jen Wang, In Real Life is a sensitive, thoughtful look at adolescence, gaming, poverty, and culture-clash. Cory Doctorow is a co-editor of Boing Boing and a columnist for multiple publications including the Guardian, Locus, and Publishers Weekly. He was named one of the Web's twenty-five influencers by Forbes magazine and a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. His award-winning novel Little Brother was a New York Times bestseller. He lives in London with his wife and daughter. Jen Wang is an cartoonist and illustrator currently living in Los Angeles. Her works have appeared in the Adventure Time comics and LA Magazine. Her graphic novel Koko Be Good was published by First Second. In Real Life is her second book. The event takes place on October 15 at 7:30pm. Skylight Books is located at 1818 N. Vermont in Los Feliz (cross is Franklin). 323-660-1175. Skylight Books is a general bookstore serving the historic Los Angeles neighborhoods of Hollywood, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Downtown. Today we are talking to one of the most powerful directors on Broadway, in the West End and in Hollywood all about the breathtaking screen-to-stage-to-screen adaptation of his Tony Award- and Olivier Award-winning Best Musical BILLY ELLIOT: THE MUSICAL, coming to Fathom movie theaters nationwide this week, the affable and gifted Stephen Daldry. Discussing originally adapting the hit British indie alongside composer Elton John and screenwriter/lyricist Lee Hall into the worldwide sensation that the musical eventually became, Daldry reflects on how many iconic elements of the original production came to be as well as comments on the enduring impact of the musical since its debut more than 10 years ago. Additionally, Daldry also touches upon his other two recent Fathom Events seen in movie theaters worldwide, Skylight and THE AUDIENCE, both of which will also be arriving on Broadway later this season in new productions. Plus, Daldry comments for the very first time on the feature film adaptation of stage sensation WICKED and working with Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman on bringing it to the screen, as well as offers his thoughts on the importance of properties such as BILLY ELLIOT and WICKED targeting the youth demographic in general. All of that, his early career success directing Caryl Churchill's remarkably prescient and powerful A NUMBER and FAR AWAY as well as an update on his new Peter Morgan TV series collaboration created especially for Netflix titled THE CROWN and much, much more in this quick yet compelling chat with one of the industry's best!
