BWW Review: Reboot's FLY BY NIGHT Charms but Mires Itself in Repetition
by Jay Irwin - Nov 6, 2016

With their second production, Reboot Theatre Company hopes to charm its audience with this sweet little tuner "rebooted" by the company with its gender Bent casting. Unfortunately, as talented and likable as the cast is, the show fails on two very important levels. It's certainly not little at 2 hours and 40 minutes and the casting does nothing to add to the story or the tone except to dilute the story in some places. (more...)

BWW Interview: Meghan Jones of RAGTIME at Actors' Repertory Theatre Of Simi
by Cary Ginell - Nov 30, 2016

The musical Ragtime, which plays through this Sunday, December 4, at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, is an important work that weaves actual historical personages into the fabric of its three intersecting stories: an upper-class white family, the African American ragtime pianist Coalhouse Walker Jr., and the Latvian immigrant Tateh. Two of the historical characters in the musical had profound impacts on American political history, which have heightened relevance due to the emotionally charged 2016 election, refocusing attention on matters of race, class, and immigration. This weekend, we interviewed the actors portraying anarchist Emma Goldman and educator/orator Booker T. Washington in the show, which will be featured in advance of this weekend's final performances of this essential work of musical theater. (more...)

Washington Stage Guild Revives its Production of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A LIVE RADIO PLAY
by BWW News Desk - Nov 17, 2016

The Washington Stage Guild starts its 'Pearl Anniversary' season with a remount of one of America's favorite holiday stories in It's A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. It's Christmas Eve, 1946, and we are the studio audience for a local radio station as its cast of voice actors and one very busy sound effects man broadcast the beloved tale of George Bailey and his encounter with Clarence, his guardian angel. This 'radio play-within-a-play' re-imagines the familiar movie as it would have been heard in homes all over America in the late 40s, when just such a broadcast took place. Playwright (more...)

by Michael L. Quintos - Nov 15, 2016

In a theatrical touchdown for the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, stage and screen star Darren Criss has agreed to reprise the notable title role he stepped into last year on Broadway: as Hedwig in the just-launched national tour of the rousing 2014 Tony Award-winning reboot of the glam rock musical HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, which began last month in San Francisco and continues its Los Angeles-area performances through November 27 (Euan Morton assumes the role for the rest of the tour starting November 29 in San Diego). Featuring solid direction from Michael Mayer and dynamic new musical staging from choreographer Spencer Liff, the searingly electric, engagingly hilarious show, at its core, celebrates the triumph of living life as authentic and as tenaciously as possible, no matter the constant obstacles. BWW Review: Lance Horne Unveils New Work (With a Little Help From His Friends) in First Show of His Residency at Joe's Pub
by Troy Frisby - Dec 3, 2016

Sitting in my seat watching Lance Horne and his many friends perform at NEW WORK NEW WORK I: EXTRAORDINARY DAYS at Joe's Pub, I couldn't help but feel like I was at a really great dinner party (if I were invited to dinner parties with some of the most talented artists in the city). The seats---and, in this case, the songs---were assigned, but the host didn't try and force conversation, and the whole affair was better for it. The purpose of the November 21 show, the first in a year-long residency, was for the successful composer and musical director to showcase his recent work, and, for new material, Horne's songs were quite polished. Fiola Faelan Promotes Contemporary Romance Novel, 'Holiday Hearts Awakening'
by BWW News Desk - Dec 12, 2016

The last thing Natalie needs in her life is a handsome-as-sin single father living right next door. What she wants to do is shun the world and embrace her broken heart. She regrets snapping at his little girl over something as silly as Christmas lights, but nothing in the world will change her mind about taking part in holiday hoopla or letting a cherub, or her sexy father, into her life. Zach's decision to ignore his snarky, smoking-hot new neighbor is an easy one, even if he feels a tug of regret he won't get to know her better. He wants nothing to do with a woman who would snap at his little girl over something as trivial as decorating for the holiday. Neither are prepared for hearts tripping and emotional barriers falling when Zach snatches her from the flames engulfing her home and ends up tucking her into his spare bedroom. Little does he know his ability to play nothing more than caretaker until she's back on her feet is nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Will holiday hearts awaken to passion and new love, or will Zach and Natalie let this chance at new love pass them by? Book Details: Holiday Hearts Awakening By Fiola Faelan Publisher: Quicksilver Garou ISBN: 978-0986327308 ASIN: B00QPCN4B4 Page: 101 Genre: Contemporary Romance About the Author: Fiola has always loved to read and cut her teeth on page-turners such as The Forest of Mystery, Robin Hood and Nancy Drew. She grew up a devout tomboy, playing with cowgirl action figures, and getting into mischief back when Silicon Valley wasn't even a gleam in San Jose's eyes. She loves to live life to its fullest, from riding hell-Bent-for-leather on her Appaloosa in gymkhanas to surf-fishing in Hawaii, jumping boulders on the breakwater in Morro Bay to walking barefoot on the beach and dreaming of romance. Many of her story ideas were found during her travels far and wide, from Corpus Christi TX, where her ancestors are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery to Pendleton OR. From Tucson AZ to Seattle WA to Vancouver BC. She's always on the lookout for that next story, that next place to bury the body. Or lock-lips with a hot guy. She lives in beautiful but weird Portland, Oregon with her amazingly talented son and daughter-in-law and their most affectionate cat Nudge.
